It was Countries/Associations where at least one club, who is located in the capital, is in the national premier league. Hertha Berlin just got relegated into the Zweite Bundesliga which makes Germany the only country that doesn't have a big Football club from the capital.
Too gimmicky? I thought it was silly ;), but I don't want to keep this thread slowed down ;)
(If you are asking yourself, for Belgium, Anderlecht is a suburb of Brussels, but a community on their own. But it is still in Brussels, I'd guess.
Wales on the other hand has Cardiff something playing with the English leagues, so it's a bit of a cheat. I do believe there's a Carffian (?) club in the first Welsh league, I'd guess ;))
classical_hero May 22, 2012, 01:09 PM Most people don't watch the German league. I knew Berlin is grossly under represented, but I never knew that it was not represented until now. :wow:

strijder20 May 22, 2012, 02:04 PM Really, Strijder sounds like a Dutch Football Player. I'm probably thinking of Snijder though
I have no clue, I don't know anything about football :p Dutch is right though ( Flemish, actually (Belgian)).
Strijder shouldn't be allowed online because he doesn't know football. Those people should be confined so that the disease won't spread.
Look into my eyes... you know nothing about football... nothing...

Yes, Anderlecht is a part of Brussels. One of the best (here in Belgium, that still means awful) Belgian football clubs is from there.

Kyriakos May 22, 2012, 02:11 PM No, and it is not about obesity either...
strijder20 May 22, 2012, 02:12 PM That probably lumps in more than social spending, though.
Yes, probably.
Even then, skinny Scandinavia is a bit strange.
Anything to do with economy?
Kyriakos May 22, 2012, 02:14 PM Not directly, no
Kyriakos May 22, 2012, 02:18 PM Btw i should note it is a map of around the change of the Millenium (2000). Not sure if it can be traced that way so i am not providing the actual date. However i doubt things have really changed since then (at least for the most part).
And here is the map again:

Kyriakos May 22, 2012, 02:21 PM Again not directly. You should not really focus on money, although it is about an item which is sold.

Here's the new one.
It's a little outdated: it's about something between 2004-2007.
Kyriakos May 22, 2012, 02:59 PM Does it have to do with fishing?
classical_hero May 22, 2012, 03:02 PM This one looks very tropical, so malaria?
strijder20 May 22, 2012, 03:02 PM Fishing
Pretty far off.
This one looks very tropical, so malaria?
Malaria is even farther off, tropical is more or less spot on (I wouldn't use tropical in describing what it is, but tropical climate definitely influences the colours of the countries).
Kyriakos May 22, 2012, 03:05 PM sugar plantations?
Takhisis May 22, 2012, 04:21 PM Clothing? Beach resorts?
classical_hero May 22, 2012, 04:23 PM Coffee production?
Takhisis May 22, 2012, 04:23 PM I… don't think Siberia produces coffee.
west india man May 22, 2012, 05:11 PM Prevalence of mosquitoes?
Takhisis May 22, 2012, 06:10 PM Again, in Siberia?
west india man May 22, 2012, 06:19 PM Siberian summers tend to have a lot of mosquitoes around, presumably with pools of stagnant water from melted ice there.
Eran of Arcadia May 22, 2012, 07:22 PM The prominence of Brazil and New Guinea make me think languages, but I don't know what that has to do with the tropics specifically.
Silv Something May 22, 2012, 08:00 PM If it had to do with number of languages, I would expect Nigeria to be much bigger.
How do the colors of the countries relate to their sizes? Is it the same thing or are they quasi-independent?
strijder20 May 22, 2012, 10:56 PM Ok, maybe saying it had directly to do with the tropics was a bit exaggerated. As you can see, Siberia also is not that small, and it's climate kind of has to do with it too.
It's the same thing, Silv Something.
Prevalence of mosquitoes?
This one gets closer than all the others so far posted.

btw. that map is strange as everything outside the geographic borders of Europe is greyed out, thereby for example dividing the great nation of Kazakhstan. That's coincidence, right?
Takhisis May 28, 2012, 04:56 PM Yes, I just grabbed the nearest one I could find, an SVG map of Europe which had the non-European parts grayed out. So Greenland (part of Denmark) I painted red but the Asian part of Russia wasn't. Parts of the Caucasus are weirded out as well. :undecide:
Geothermal power?Amount of happy people? No and no.
I really didn't think I'd make this one so difficult!
strijder20 May 28, 2012, 11:26 PM Does it have to do with, uh, Europe?

It's a historical category.

countries with numbered republics works for France, Germany, Italy, Poland, etc., but England, Denmark etc. ? I do have trouble connecting the big countries with the little ones (Estonia, Ireland and Iceland seem particularly disconnected).

Leoreth May 30, 2012, 07:29 AM If it's a historical category, are we to assume that all of the colored states existed in the referenced time period? Successor states / parts of a larger state don't seem to count because Estonia is colored, while the other Baltic states aren't, although afaik they all have been independent at the same time.

The Vikings raided Finland but the Swedes only started settling/conquering it after the Viking age was past.
Turkey, no, the Vikings went there but were never in power, they were Mercs.
I wasn't sure about settlements in LatviaLithuania so I left well alone -and forgot to rectify.

Ingerland was a republic commonwealth too.

mitsho Jun 05, 2012, 08:06 AM Well, Hong Kong has a different colour than China which means it must be a dataset that collects it separately. Might have something to do with the PISA Studies which is based on OECD. But there is more countries coloured than there are OECD members. So it might not be a sociological survey after all...
After looking at the map again, I don't think it's an index like Happiness, Values or something like that as much of Africa has the same values as the Northern World / (the West). So I guess they key is the differences between culturally similar countries:
What's the difference between China and Hong Kong.
Why is Hungary/Armenia/Nepal red, while the rest of Eastern Europe/Caucasus/East Asia is blue?
What does Lithuania have more in common with Belarus and Poland than with the other Baltics?
Portugal and its colonies (Brazil, Angola, Mocambique, Cape Verdes) are all blue, which is different from the rest of the European countries.
What makes Thailand special?
And why is Djibouti the only country with no data (even freaking Somalia has). That's probably an oversight ;)
Is it some sort of temporal scale? (Every colour is a different decade)?

Djibouti could be both blue and red, but it was a mistake that i didn't color it.
The colors are categories.
...so I'm not the only one who doesn't even have a wild guess?Okay, to speed it up a little, a clue: After i made this map i thought that Brazil at least puts you on the right track.
mitsho Jun 08, 2012, 03:44 AM The colors are categories.
What else could they be? It's normal that a map is coloured by categories.
Are you trying to say that it's not a range (e.g. from 0-100 % where 0-20 % is one colour, the next 20 are another)?
You also didn't answer me if it's a temporal scale which I take to mean it's not?
Okay, to speed it up a little, a clue: After i made this map i thought that Brazil at least puts you on the right track.
That's not really helpful... After all I already pointed out that the "Portuguese" Colonies are all blue. I'm more curious why Hong Kong is a different colour from China. Something with independence? But it's not political, right?

Don't concentrate too much on Hong Kong, it propably would have been better too make it both blue and red, but you wouldn't have spotted it on the map anyway.

Close enough. It is a map of gender ratio in each of the Indian states and territories.
Blue are the ten states with the highest ratio of women/men, and red are those with the lowest (ie more men than women). In Kerala, there are more women then men; significantly more, in fact, due to all the men going off to the Gulf to work.

mitsho Nov 29, 2012, 11:09 AM I like that you did the stripes by hand ;) There's certainly some easy way to do that in paint as well, anybody care to tell us? (not meant negatively, just wanted to point out).
So the stripes seem to be a AND category, for the colours I'd guess that they show time (decades) since that would make the most sense with such opposites like France and Indonesia, Spain and Russia, Thailand and Canada.
My first gues was something with Women leadership, but Egypt and Turkey seem to point that towards a no, so I got nothing.

They're different categories, although most colors indicate being in more than one category simultaneously.

Countries who have gotten close to world cup championships and ones who have one
It has nothing to do with sports
Borachio Nov 29, 2012, 01:47 PM It's got me puzzled. I can't even think of stupid guesses.
Takhisis Nov 29, 2012, 01:53 PM Something about languages perhaps.
Borachio Nov 29, 2012, 01:54 PM I can't see anything linguistic there, tbh.
Indonesian New Guinea would be a complete mess. In fact, I think they all would, except for Greenland maybe.
hobbsyoyo Nov 29, 2012, 03:01 PM Countries with space programs
west india man Nov 29, 2012, 04:20 PM No, but it has a lot to do with infrastructure, although very large cities (New York, Moscow, etc.) don't tend to have it as much.
mitsho Nov 29, 2012, 04:33 PM So, do we have here 4 base categories (Red, Blue, Yellow, Striped) where Orange has both Red and Yellow, Green has both Blue and Yellow and Purple has both Red and Blue. Is India the "has all three categories" since it does seem to have a different base colour than the other blue states?
I further assume that Grey is no data, since I can't imagine anything "infrastructure"-related that will not be found in the grey areas of Europe, Argentinia and New Zealand. I'm still confused that it's apparently linked to cities, yet its states that are coloured.
Something to with modes of transportation (Metro, International Airport, Harbour, etc. ...) or Tallest Buildings?
Just saw that Italy apparently has another shade of blue, now I'm really confused...
west india man Nov 29, 2012, 04:36 PM It's to do with modes of transportation, and the base colors are Green, Orange, Yellow and Red Stripes/Burgundy (Which represent the same thing, with Burgundy colored countries being otherwise grey with red stripes). Grey means the country doesn't have anything related to this type of infrastructure at all.
Borachio Nov 29, 2012, 04:46 PM Well, the modes of transport are air, road, rail, sea and inland waterways. But are you talking transport studies here?
hobbsyoyo Nov 29, 2012, 04:47 PM Well modes of transport are air, road, rail, sea and inland waterways. But then every country (that's not landlocked) would have all of them.

hobbsyoyo Nov 29, 2012, 04:52 PM Yes. I know. I'm plainly not on the right track. Hmmm. Plane. Track.

Borachio Nov 29, 2012, 04:55 PM Why would that be less common in big cities?
hobbsyoyo Nov 29, 2012, 04:56 PM I have no idea...I'm grasping at straws.
Cities with pony rides?
mitsho Nov 29, 2012, 05:05 PM It could be some sort of width-of-railway-tracks which of course heavily changes from city to city and for example New York does not have a tram system. (It has a metro, but that's a different kind).
I however struggle heavily to find any Railway, Mountain Cable Cars or Electronic Rails not found in Switzerland...??? Keep in mind, that we also have Barbados, so it's not only for Big cities.
Hmm, Segways?
west india man Nov 29, 2012, 05:06 PM Ninja'd, mitsho is getting a lot closer, but is still not on the mark.
But then every country (that's not landlocked) would have all of them.

(Damn! Monorails was just a blind guess. I don't understand that key at all. The UK has abandoned plans for a monorail? Is that right? And why are they less popular in large cities?)
west india man Nov 30, 2012, 01:23 PM Judging from skimming this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_monorails), monorails (especially outside of the Far East) tend to be mostly used for amusement or at theme parks.

mitsho Nov 30, 2012, 01:39 PM Yeah, that key is confusing, what does the light yellow one say, under construction?
I really advise to use colour schemes (i.e. red + yellow = orange) when mixing stuff like this. Or even better, just subdivide the countries and have them in stripes or something. All those shades of blue...
Oh well, let's hope I do better, though that map is not self made ;)

Average duration of love making?
Well, it's something social in any case, but not sex, no ;)

Doesn't really gel with the whole Africa and Europe in the green category, does it?
It's really difficult to give a hint that's neither too obvious nor misleading. So I'm gonna leave it at "something social" and state the obvious fact that if we could exclude the green category, the map would be more interesting ;)
