View Full Version : How to change the refresh rate in Civ3?

Hi,
The problem is that the game runs by default in 1024x768 / 60Hz mode and the second factor is really annoying on a 19'' screen. I've already tried programs like MuliRes etc. , but the game always crushes while attempting to change the refresh rate. Could anybody help me how, if possible, can I force Civ3 to run in 100Hz or at least 85Hz mode? Because 60Hz is almost unplayable on my monitor :(

Try sticking the following line into your Civ3.ini file:

refresh = 85 (or whatever refresh rate you want)

That is supposed to help this kind of problem. ;)

Unfortunately, it didin't help :(( Nevertheless, thanks for help :)

:(

Sorry to hear that. (But I appreciate the thanks. :) )

I did a search of the Civ3 Tech Support forum with the words "refresh rate", and that was one of the answers I found. But even then it didn't seem to help all related problems. You might want to look through the Civ III Fixes (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7495) thread (yeah, it's long, but it has a lot of info). That's where this tidbit was found.

I kept searching through the net for a program that could change the refresh rate in the game and I found a "very good" one - nVidia Refresh Rate Fix 2.1. But I can't understand WHY ON EARTH it keeps saying "This program was unable to read your display adapter setup info". I followed the instructions to download the datebase from the net and even changed my Detonators to the newest version (41 sth) and it didn't help :( Maybe anybody knows how to run this program on Geforce3 Ti200 ?

Hmm, sounds like it should work for you. But unfortunately, I don't know much about the GeForce series (I use an ATI Radeon 9000).

I solved the problem :) Anyway, thanks for helping me :)
Anyone who has a similar problem - just add the following lines to civilization3.ini:
Refresh=85 (the refresh rate you want)
Video Mode=1600 (if you want 1600x1200 or you can put 1280 for 1280x1024 etc.)
KeepRes=1 (if you want to keep your winxp's res)

If you want just keep your win's res, then I think keepres=1 should work, but somohow it didn't on my comp. :(

If you can forgive me bumping an old thread, I'd like to thank you for this info. I recently discovered the PlayIntro=0 option for PTW.ini to skip the movie intro but it was dropping my refresh rate. A quick search found this thread and adding the appropriate (for me):
Keepres=1
Video Mode=1024
Refresh=75
to my PTW.ini (as opposed to civilization3.ini which had no effect) solved the problem. So thanks to Padma, and Amenhotep, and whoever originally discovered this :)

I just can't find the PWT.ini file....
where did you find it?

PTW.ini should be in your Civ3PTW directory, IIRC. (I'm at work and don't/can't have the game installed. ;) )

I can play the game now, only it still doesn't show the intro, and then it messes up the colors, the resolution is good, so no trouble with that, but I think it's playing with 256 colors...
does anyone know how to solve that problem?

I just added the lines to the "Civilization3.ini" file, and that worked. I don't seem to have those maps, and files you talk about: Civ3PTW and IIRC

thanx anyways

Oops. :blush: In your case, "Civilization3.ini" is the correct file. PTW.ini is in the Civ3PTW directory, and is, of course, for the Play The World Expansion Pack.

BTW(By The Way): IIRC = If I Recall Correctly. ;)

As for you color depth problem: :confused: I haven't seen that before, so I'd better let someone more knowledgeable than me tackle that.
