View Full Version : New Jaguar Update -> 10.2.4
dojoboy Feb 13, 2003, 06:52 PM The new update addresses, among other things, quartz rendering compatibility w/ Civ3.
However, I can't figure out how to download it. I'm unable to navigate to a window for an Admin password.
ejday Feb 13, 2003, 07:05 PM It isn't coming up when you go to the System Preferences/Software Update? Hm. I'd reboot and try it again.
dojoboy Feb 13, 2003, 07:10 PM It worked. I was spazzing.

Where'd you hear that?
dojoboy Feb 13, 2003, 08:02 PM Its in the read-me, under "Other Enhancements." No lie, and the game looks so much better - very nice on the eyes. :) Its still a little slow, so I'll probably turn it back off.
lateralis Feb 13, 2003, 10:14 PM from apple's sight under other enhancements:
Improves compatibility with Firaxis Civilization III when the application's "Quartz text rendering" option is enabled.
neato!!
elpadrino87 Feb 14, 2003, 03:41 PM Since I still don't have OS X, I'm not really familiar with the updates: are they free? It would be pretty sweet if they are, even if they are large in size, I'm willing to spend a few hours on the internet to download them once I have X. :D With any luck, if my question's answers is yes, I will soon be heading towards the Microcenter in Boston and buying it, now that they have it on sale for $99. :goodjob:
senecasax Feb 14, 2003, 03:57 PM Once you have 10.2, you get the updates through the software update feature in system preferences. And yes, they are free :)
warpstorm Feb 14, 2003, 04:37 PM Do they still have Flurry?

Yes, yes they do.
dbradhud Feb 14, 2003, 05:36 PM All right. Just the incentive I need to move my iBook from OS9 to OSX.

Cool, it's my favorite screensaver, but I'm biased ;)
senecasax Feb 14, 2003, 11:24 PM The quartz text is wonderful! So much easier on the eyes than the other. I haven't had much of a speed slowdown (I've got a 733 Quicksilver), so i'll be stickin with it :-D
elpadrino87 Feb 15, 2003, 09:04 AM And, yes, they are free :)
HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH! :D First thing tommorrow I'm heading to the store and buying 10.2. Thanks, senecasax! [dance]
Whoa, almost forgot! Would anything on my hard drive have to be backed up before I install 10.2? I wouldn't want to lose anything especially my saved games(I know that its kinda pathetic that i don't know a lot about computers; but all i really need to know is that Mac is the computer for me as well as everyone else ;) I just want to make sure)
Txurce Feb 15, 2003, 09:45 AM Elpadrino, I upgraded from 9.1 to 10.2, and lost no saved games.
Beamup Feb 15, 2003, 10:00 AM Still, it's always best to keep a backup of anything you don't want to lose. You should always have one - I suggest updating it every weekend so you can remember easily. This is particularly true when upgrading your OS - the chances of anything going wrong are remote, but it's best to not take the risk.
ejday Feb 15, 2003, 12:05 PM Tried Quartz on X.2.4 last night. It looked pretty good until I got to the city advisor screen -- then it looked like it got hijacked by a kid with permanent markers. Maybe it was my screen resolution (1440x900), but I'll be disabling Quartz when I go back in.
Bummer.
DiamondzAndGunz Feb 15, 2003, 01:22 PM Hmm, yeah. I recently downloaded 10.2.4 as well, and decided to try it. It looked great and was all peachy till I opened up the advisor. It was all very wierd... I'm running it in 1024x768, so I'm pretty sure it isn't the screen res.
MacBaldrick Feb 15, 2003, 05:09 PM I have a 1440 x 900 LCD screen and got the same cr*p with quartz. Turned it off and all is fine. It Civ 3 runs faster too I don't see the point of bothering with quartz.
senecasax Feb 15, 2003, 08:42 PM Say, yea, what happened! I'm goin with quartz anyway though, the other text (on the main screen) is sooooo much easier on the eyes...
elpadrino87 Feb 16, 2003, 12:02 PM Thanks to everyone who told me what I needed to know. I'm off to get my second taste of OS X (tried it at the mac store first) Once its installed, since I've got vacation for this entire week off thanks to Washington and of course, Lincoln, I'll probably grab a more comfy chair to sit on in front of my computer. Cheers to everyone!
