Is there any tool that can allow me to do this, or does anyone have the time and dedication to convert a map from Civ2 to Civ 3 PTW format?

There was a BMP2MAP converter way back in the early days of Apolyton... (before this site was even started. :)), but I'm not sure if there's a bmp2bix convertor. Plus, I think the way the Civ2 Map and Civ3 Map worlds are designed, civ2 maps would look distorted. But, there's no util that I know of...

Just curious, what map are you looking to convert?

Well, it is a Gigamap of the world that I have been using for my Civ2 WWII scenario. It is actually a perfect map for my purposes and I have actaully converted it by hand before, but only got half way through it before I had a hard drive crash and lost it. I am/was going to make a port of my scenario over to Civ 3, so I may just wind up using a map like TET's world map or something similar. I know the map is huge, but it is going to be designed as a PBEM so the loading times and time between turns really wouldn't matter.

Here's what I did to create my Krynn map and convert it from Civ2 to III. I got the map maker utility off of these boards somewhere, then changed the terrain pallete's in civ2 to correspond to the colors that the utility understood. Loaded up Civ2 maptool and made a screenshot of the whole map. Cropped the image and made it the proper resoultion for the mapmaker utility and bingo, new civ3 map. It took a long time to get the civ2 palletes correct, took me about a day of fooling around with it.

Is there a utility someone may be working on to convert them, I have several home made maps that I want to convert to Civ3. I could probably do it by hand in a day though.

Here is the link to the Mapmaking Utility.

You can use it to import BMPs either from real maps or from Civ2 maps (need the Civ2 maptool it seems).

I used it for my Egyptian map and I have to say it is great for coastlines. After you have to do most of the fillings yourself except if you are a pro at palettes handling.

But :

-it converts only into Bic files (so you need to open it using the PTW editor, remove X or Y wrapping then you can save it as a bix file.

- there is a distortion in the editor so if you want a square map you should prepare a not-square map then wrap it without keeping proportions to reach a balance when you convert it.

I've been working on a function to convert MP files for C3MT. Right now I'm working on finding a good way of converting rivers. (If anyone can tell me a good way to treat the difference that civ2 rivers are on tiles and Civ3's are between I'd probably be able to finish this soon.)
If you want a map converted with only terrain i can do it now. But I still want to add options for resource seeding and shielded grassland randomization on import and other sush things.

At the current state rivers get marked in the north corner of the tile they were on, and a simple image assiging is used. Note that Civ3 only allows three different terraintypes on the same tilemeeting of four tiles, but Civ2 allows four. This means that some spots might look strange, but just do an edit to the map and Civ3 edit will update it acording to the civ3 graphic rules.

Converted using the latest conversion function. (This one converts rivers as well)

Awesome Gramphos!

Here is the updated fixed version, if it wouldn't be too much work could you do this one for me?

hey thats a cool map, the terrain placement is weird but with some heavy editing it could be one of the best world maps out.

Hey, Yoda, best World Map I've ever seen, a lot of the weird terrain placements are for a reason though. There is probably some polar ice caps in Japan and the Far East because in my Civ 2 scenario the polar terrain was used for Rice Paddies, also there is a lot of grassland because plains are the only places that Industry(mines) can be built, so I am going to place them very sparingly.

Thanks a lot agiain Gramphos!
