Never played an OCC and this is first time playing as Gandhi.I think I've already started out wrong. figured I'd go GL than HG but it might have been better to go Education beeline.when playing a OCC can we still puppet? also is it worth going Liberty at all? I went tradition/honor opener in favor of the raging barbs.

Up to about turn 140 at present and so far so good.

Initial build was (roughly) scout, monument, granary, worker (bought), GL, NC, HG, HS, elephant & archer (both bought), observatory and PT.

Initial research was (roughly) pottery, writing, mining, archery, AH, wheel, philo (free), masonry, maths and many others

I have all the science buildings up and running with public school next when research complete.

Signed 4 RA's so far but money is scarce (apart from me)

3 GS's so far, two for academies and one for astronomy for the observatory.

Social policies was Tradition (all) plus Honor opened for want of something better and rationalism opened. I will work my way through that next.

I have met all the civs and Germany DoWed about turn 110. Easily repelled. I agreed straight peace as he was broke anyway.

Allied to two CS's so far.

I can't see how I can lose from here, but I have no idea how soon it will be especially as an OCC.

@QuizMan

almost ran the exact same thing as you.....I'm at turn 126 and have the same wonders + Oracle and now working on Ironworks..Hammers are hard to come by that is why I am building Ironworks.Germany also DoW'd me around turn 90 I think but that was easy.friended 3 CS's one of each.went a little different with SP's as I want to start on getting more CS's.

Up to about turn 135 at present and so far so good.
Settled in place, thought about gold hill but decided against it.
Initial build was (roughly) scout x2, monument, warrior, granary $, worker $, watermill $ GL, HG, NC, HS, oracle and PT.
Initial research was (roughly) pottery, writing, mining, archery, AH, wheel, HG tech(free), then philo and onto education.
I have all the science buildings up and running with public school next when research complete.
Signed 4 RA's in classical era, and 2 so far in renaissance but money is scarce and I hard built uni and obs
3 GS's so far, one for academy and one for astronomy for the observatory.
Social policies was Tradition 3 plus Honor opened for barb culture kills, most of patronage, freedom and rationalism opened. I will work my way through rationalism next.

I tried Tommy trick of Dow for gold and it definitely is penalizing you later on, I have most civs as guarded and warmonger rep, I would have been better off with constant OB trades and full $ for luxes in the long run. I think I Dowed two or three civs. met all the civs, Germany DoWed about turn 80. Easily repelled, pillaged all his horses and He sued for peace with some$ and gpt thrown in
Allied to four CS's right now, lots of units from military CS from barb hut quests, giving them back now to save cash. Building spaceship will take a long time with occ. Maybe save few GEs for larger parts?

Easy diff makes me go for wonders I would assume unattainable on higher level, $ is scarce, AI just as dumb

Turn 175 :

Settled in place, i built scout-worker then started wonders. I worked calendar ressources(constantly sold) first then gold(constantly sold). I don't need luxuries at all in this game.

Capital built Stonehenge and Pyramids first before Hanging Gardens. Built Great Lib for Civil Service. 2 manufactories are helping me right now but i focus to put 2 more before starting parts. Only PT has been insta built. I missed Chichen Itza by 1 turn around turn 162.

Went full Tradition then Commerce. Picked Freedom and Rationalism back to back thanks to Oracle.

I saved all my :c5gold: for RAs. started them around turn 80, the first 3 ones gave me only a few beakers before i built the PT around turn 113. Other ones were pretty useful. I signed 20 RAs total so far, 6 are waiting. Germany broke his second one at 1 turn left of maturation. This guy is rich, i loaned a lot of :c5gold: to fund RAs. Now at war with him, i'm pretty happy that he broke the deal actually. I can loan even more :c5gold: for earlier RAs. I built a single cannon to defend myself properly. My other units are warriors and an archer.

I have only 1 saved GS so far though. Used 3 of them for 3 bulbs.

We have coal but it looks like we don't have aluminium. I have a question : what happens if you conquer a cs under OCC? It disappears too?

When I moved the warrior I saw there were cows in the NE so I moved across the river and settled so I was still next to the mountain, but would have the cows in the 3rd ring. After exploring more I saw I would have had cows in the 3rd ring in the original spot as well as 1 water tile. Then when I finished animal husbandry and saw I the horses to the north were also in my 3rd ring, I was very glad I made the move.

I'm not sure what turn I took a break on, nor when I'll finish, because my wife bought me Heroes of Might & Magic 6. Next time I open Civ 5 I'll get some more details of what I've built. I know I got HG, GW, GL and I think HS and am 1st in soldiers after buying a couple elephants and upgrading to swords when Germany DoW'd.

How is homm6 ? I thought homm3 was the only strategy game better the civ, but 4 and 5 did not live to my expectations, and I never even finished their single player campaigns. I hope 6 is back to same standard as 3, not holding my breath though.

Turn 215 :

RAs almost all completed. I'm starting Apollo, i will finish the game under a perpetual GA starting in 6 turns. I will start parts also in 6 turns, every techs needed will be discovered. Because of RAs, i couldn't start Apollo sooner. It was better to delay Apollo and reach every techs sooner than the opposite because i would have to research the last tech manually(40 turn? no way).

1 GS, 1GE and 1GArt will appear in a couple of turns. The last GE will build the 4th manufactory. No aluminium(impossible).

I destroyed Germany's capital for personnal pleasure.

- Where did you decide to settle?

I settled in place

- Were there any early wars and did you start them?

Germany betrayed our friendship. Thankfully he waited until after our first RA completed and before we signed another. I whipped him and got money gpt and silver out of the deal. Best war ever.

- What Social Policies did you choose and why?

Opened Tradition --> opened Honor --> Oligarchy --> Aristocracy --> Military Caste --> Professional Military --> opened Patronage --> Finished Tradition --> Opened Rationalism --> Opened Freedom --> Constitution --> Secularism --> Free Thought

- What tech path did you follow?

Beelined to Calendar, then mining, then teched for wonders and buildings. I was lucky with finding ruins that gave me a culture boost, a gold boost, an upgrade to my scout, population boost, and archery tech. I also got lucky with barb camps and CS requests. I picked up a couple units from military CS quickly. Thus, I had a strong military early and no reason to pursue military techs for upgrades. Therefore I teched to (1) build desired wonders and buildings (2) maximize returns on RAs.

- What Wonders did you prioritize?

I've been indulging myself, perhaps to my detriment. I was friendly with all five of the civs I had met as of turn 60 or so. Cathy was nowhere near me and friendly, but once I built Stonehenge she went completely hostile and denounced me. An identical situation occured later with Elizabeth when I built the Oracle. I've built every single wonder except Pyramids (didn't need the workers), Ankor Wat (too many better things to build), Colossus and Great Lighthouse (not on coast).

- In this game, more City-States were added, how did this affect your strategy?

Hasn't too much. More requests to clear barbs have led to many friendships and a couple alliances, which is nice. The only CS I've allied and maintained is Cape Town. I needed that Iron and the pearls were nice. Other than that I'm trying to stay on everybody's good side so I can keep those RAs going. My wonder building binge has slowed my ability to RA with Cathy and Liz, but nevertheless I've got 18 RAs complete and six more signed by turn 240. I feel like if I started grabbing city states it would just anger more civs and take money from my RAs.

- How does the easier difficulty affect your play?

The easier difficulty allows me to relax and indulge my builder spirit. I have built everything and created one of the greatest cities of all time. Delhi is currently pop35, food 50, hammers82, gold164, science278, culture178. I have the specialists set such that an engineer and scientist have popped simultaneously on four occassions. I have four scientists saved up so far and two manufacturies.

I'm scratching my head right now. One of the city states does have aluminium, and i'm allied with it, yet i do not gain the alluminium.. whats wrong?

You're not alone.

The answer below came from the TSG24 After Action thread.

My understanding of when the CS hook up their strategic resources is: CS hook up the resource when two AI have the tech to see it....

In that case i think it shouldn't be listed with the CS Available Ressources then. It's missleading.
Finished turn 322 now.. i don't like OCCs, pretty much only "next turn" - "wait a minute until the world finishes doing the interesting stuff"

edit: and i'm in the wrong thread..
edit - not anymore. :)

I think they are calling it Nearby resources, and sometimes include resources that are not even inside CS borders yet.

One game a CS didn't expand first on their luxury and I was able to place a city close and buy the tile with the luxury. The CS was still reported as giving that luxury until the end of the game.

Were they actually giving it, or listing it as their nearby Rez. When you hover the cursor over your allied status in CS screen it lists what they are actually giving.

The CS was not providing the luxury when allied. Still it was listed even though they could not control it.
