Prince. I've not yet attempted a game above that level.

Emperor. Seems the most 'balanced', without being an automatic win.

Voted Emperor, but I'm thinking that the game could use a difficulty level between Emperor & Immortal.

Immortal. Been playing that for months and months but have seem to have hit a brick wall, no matter how hard I try I can't beat Deity.

I agree that Emperor feels the most balanced. I also enjoy playing games on Immortal, but feel that Immortal and Deity give too many freebies to the AI players and eliminate options which make the game feel very restricted...almost like there is only one path to victory.

It would be nice if the AI could be programmed to play better at higher levels rather than having to resort to allowing the AI the cheat to increase difficulty. Oh well...we can all dream I suppose.

My level is probably Immortal, because I can win regularly enough without reloading. I'm a reloading fool on Deity. I don't really enjoy battling grotesque bonuses though, so I went with Emperor. My opinion is this game is probably best as a MP game, but I can't play MP (DSL) so...

I don't like how ridiculous the advantage becomes for runaway AI civs though.
Their happiness/money boosts are just retarded. I cannot imagine how insane it becomes on harder difficulties.

I guess i realize this helps the AI with their gross incompetence at pretty much everything...

Voted emperor. You don't have to have a 100% thought out strategy when you start, and crappy map conditions doesn't mean you have to reload. The AI gets bonuses, but no to the extreme. I think it's overall a well-balanced level in which making a minor mistake every now and then doesn't mean you're screwed. Also, you're not as locked into a specific strategy as on higher levels.

I play Immortal, usually with all random settings.

I actually find it easier than Prince for certain strategies like Snarzberry's Mongol/Songhai strategy that involve getting gold from the AI.
Its tough making research agreements on Prince since the AI never has enough gold.

...and then they spam that cash into Research Agreements with every other AI (who shouldn't even like the Runaway!) and get a massive technology lead. I know that AI all too well on King...

I play all difficulties. But emperor is the best level to try something different with a bit of a challenge. AI seems to perform ''ok''.

Haha well i don't play settler for fun. For HoF games only, where you compare best times. And yes you can play this level 100% drunk and still get an incredible finish! :lol:

Immortal.

Emperor allows for lots of variation in play but is a little too easy and I don't feel like I have to engage myself to win.

Deity is nice for the challenge but I can only beat it using "optimal" play that I find boring after a few times in a row. If I try an alternative strategy or get a quirky start I inevitably get murdered or just fall behind and someone else wins.

Immortal is that sweet spot for me that provides fun, engaging gameplay but doesn't restrict me to a narrow winning pattern.

Emperor as its fun game where i dont have to spam units and can get good balance of buildings etc

Ive played tons of Immortal games. One could say Ive truly mastered it. Still like it as it gives nice flexibility to the player and offer good challenge. You dont need to play optimally. Just make sure you build NC/GL soon, take the most out of your happiness, bulb a few scientist and it should be it.

I've won on immortal but only by domination (good job I love warmongering). Any other VC make me feel under pressure for the whole game. I can't take the stress!!
Agree that a level between emperor and immortal would be just perfect for me.

Seems, as if the bell curve is out of balanced a little bit: Too many players on harder difficulty levels. Most players should vote for an medium difficulty level, optimally.

There are some beginners voting for "Settler", but I'm pretty sure, they would perfectly be able to start at Warlord, too.

So, maybe discarding the lower difficulty levels and "spreading" the higher ones (@: FromBirth!) would be a good thing to do.

By the way: I favour emperor level.
