I've read the first two posts and they seem very...advanced.

Is there any guide to playing Civ 5 NiGHTS?

Sort of a step-by-step noobie guide.

I'm a proud intelligent RTS player, but when it comes to Civilization games, I've been trying to play them since Civ 3, but never really got a hold of it.

Have you read the "Welcome" thread? That probably gives the quickest intro to this mod. The main thing you should remember is that unlike in vanilla CIV V, Citizens generate happiness, while military units (and new cities) consume happiness.

Your goal should be to grow your cities as quickly as possible for the free citizen happiness (along with policy/building choices that increase happiness), while at the same time balancing your expansion and the size of your army.

Also, if you defeat an encamped barbarian, it will join your side, and these early barbarians don't consume unhappiness like regular military units that you build.

There's also a few posts in the "Strategies" thread that outline some of the ways people play the mod if you find you're having trouble with happiness or your economy.

I noticed that while I was playing the..i dunno, 10 Player setting, I started out with 4 civs within like 10 tiles of me.

That normal?

I haven't modded anything regarding the placement of the AI Cities, so this would be normal, yes... Were you playing on a smaller map with more than the standard amount of AI? I've found that the game, (mod and vanilla), plays best when you stick with the recommended amount of city-states and civs per different map type/size. As soon as you start tweaking these settings, overall balance gets messed up a bit - but that's on firaxis... :crazyeye:

Must of just been rotten luck. Started a new game and made a good 5-6 cities before I started really getting close to another civ.

I'll be playing on a huge Earth map, TSL's
