View Full Version : [Religion and Revolution]: Adding Another European Nation
raystuttgart Jan 10, 2012, 07:38 AM Hi guys,
topic has been discussed before, but I would like to pic up discussion again.
I would really like to have 6 European Nations in total.
Especially because I would like to have even numbers of both Religions for later Releases, when we integrate Religions: Protestants and Catholics as major feature.
I know that most of you would not like Prussia. ;)
(It is not historically correct considering Northern and Southern America, I know.)
I also would not like to do Russia because Russia was Orthodox, which does not fit to Protestant.
(A 3rd Religion would make things unnecessarily complicated. Please let us not do that.)
Sweden would theoretically be possible, but their time of Colonization of the New World was incredibly short and unsuccessful.
I suggest Denmark.
(Historically correct and Protestant. Both criterias fullfilled. Compared to Sweden, they were much more successful. )
Then we would have:
Catholics: Spain, Portugal, France
Protestants: Holland, England, Denmark
See here, I think, it would fit. :)
(Denmark had Greenland and even a Colony in the Caribbean for a while.)

Gomer_Pyle Jan 10, 2012, 10:39 AM This is the part I really dislike. I will just disable them when I play I am afraid.
raystuttgart Jan 10, 2012, 10:45 AM This is the part I really dislike.
Ok, then we simply don't do it at all. :dunno:
(That is part of the "philosophy" of this mod.)
But please explain what exactly you don't like about New European Nation Denmark. ;)
(I would like to understand the problem.)
Androrc the Orc Jan 10, 2012, 11:01 AM I like the idea of adding new European nations, but I don't see why protestants and catholics would have to be even in number? It would be interesting to eventually have all of the historic colonizers: England, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Brandenburg, Courland, Denmark, Russia and Sweden.
In any case, I have another suggestion; the addition of iMinLatitude and iMaxLatitude fields to the CivilizationInfos xml, as well bNorth and bSouth fields. These would be used to control the starting location of colonies, so that the Portuguese colony would start at a tropical latitude in the south hemisphere, for instance.
Another idea is to add multiple colonies for some colonizing powers; so that Spain would have both New Spain and La Plata, for instance. I have most of the code done for this feature (I intended to release it as a modcomp); the only issue is that to do this I have to add European countries in a different manner than in vanilla, and I can't seem to make the colonies have their contact.
raystuttgart Jan 10, 2012, 11:33 AM I like the idea of adding new European nations, but I don't see why protestants and catholics would have to be even in number?
Maybe it is not "necessary".
But I really like to keep features in balance.
Religions are supposed to have effect on attitudes, for example.
It would be interesting to eventually have all of the historic colonizers: England, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Brandenburg, Courland, Denmark, Russia and Sweden.
I would like that. :)
(However, Russia would mean a 3rd religion. It will be a lot more effort, but I guess, we could do it.)
But let us start with 1 New European Nation first. ;)
(This will already be a lot of work. UnitArtStyles for example.)
Did you take a look at my feature "Geographically correct Placement of Natives" ?
The same concept could be used here, too. (Also being a GameOption.)
If the team wants to have "Geographically correct Placement of Europeans" (as GameOption), I could easily implement it.
However:
Gomer already said, he doesn't want Denmark.
(I really want to understand the problem first, before continuing discussions about further Europeans.)
Karl-Heinz Jan 10, 2012, 11:58 AM With "Geographically correct Placement for Europeen" some colonys would never get a chance of Latitude-depended-ressources. Do you really wanted this?
raystuttgart Jan 10, 2012, 11:59 AM With "Geographically correct Placement for Europeen" some colonys would never get a chance of Latitude-depended-ressources. Do you really want this?
It would be a GameOption, deactivated by default. ;)
(So if you don't like it, don't use it ...)
It is nothing I personally would use when playing but it is really easy to do for me. :dunno:
(So if the team wants to have that GameOption, I will do it.)
Androrc the Orc Jan 10, 2012, 12:06 PM With "Geographically correct Placement for Europeen" some colonys would never get a chance of Latitude-depended-ressources. Do you really wanted this?
Not necessarily; for instance the Portuguese colony would start at a tropical latitude at the southern hemisphere, but if it wanted it could sail northwards to another climate. What this feature would do is not restrict these colonies to founding settlements in such a range, but rather make it more likely that their first settlement would be founded there.
raystuttgart Jan 10, 2012, 12:08 PM What this feature would do is not restrict these colonies to founding settlements in such a range, but rather make it more likely that their first settlement would be founded there.
True.
And as I said, it would be a GameOption. ;)
(Nobody would be forced to anything.)
Gomer_Pyle Jan 10, 2012, 01:17 PM I mean that I dont really like any of these minor colonization nations being added. But this is something you really want and I am not to stand in its way. I will just disable in my own game when playing. Reason being that in the grand scheme of things I dont think having one colony in the new world justifies being among these original ones. I would aleast make them "minor nations" with limitations. But like I said I am not gonna stand in its way.

We could give them a bLateComer tag, and then make them appear only in the second era (the 1600s), in the case they are AI (and as such much of the land would be already occupied, and they would be in an inferior position to the other colonial civilizations, and as such be minor ones). If they were chosen by the player, they would appear at start.
What do you think?
raystuttgart Jan 10, 2012, 01:23 PM I mean that I dont really like any of these minor colonization nations being added. But this is something you really want and I am not to stand in its way.
As I said, Denmark had Greenland.
(Quetion is, if you count this as "New World".)
I would like to have 6 European Nations with equal balance between Religions.
(3 Catholic and 3 Protestant)
However, this is not essential to me. ;)
Everything else is "nice to have" for me.
(So if other team members want to add even more European Nations, I will accept and support if needed.)
raystuttgart Jan 10, 2012, 01:25 PM What do you think?
Interesting.
However, for Denmark that would not fit. (Greenland)
I would like them to be a normal European Nation like all the others.
colonialfan Jan 10, 2012, 05:47 PM Hi Ray,
I think you know my answer for adding another European nation. :goodjob: I've been pushing for more nations since the beginning. (See posts #12 & 46 on our Mod development thread) I can see your point about wanting to balance things out, so Denmark would be the obvious choice. As for their settlements, they have Greenland and some islands in the Caribbean, but unless you are playing a strictly historical game, what is to stop them from establishing colonies elsewhere? Personally I think they would be a nice addition to the game and make it more challenging and fun. Adding Sweden too would be fantastic, but lets not get ahead of ourselves.
I would really really like this feature to be implemented if possible. Of course I'll accept team consensus but, if we are leaning towards rejecting the feature can we at least discuss it a little more first. :)
Gomer_Pyle Jan 10, 2012, 10:30 PM Do you know when Denmark colonized greenland? it was early. If this is the argument. Then Norway should be playable too. They discovered america (New Foundland) very very early. (year 1000). Dont seem realistic to me to add them as fully playable nations.
Robert Surcouf Jan 10, 2012, 11:19 PM Hi everyone,
Let's put it this way... I really like the religious feature. After all, that's why we're calling our mod Religion and Revolution ;)
I actually agree with Ray. It seems better if we have an equal number of protestants/catholics. Let's say we stick with five nations (2 protestants and 3 catholics). If you chose to play with an English leader, you will get three diplomatic penalties and only one bonus.
Of course we could do the religious feature whatever, but the balancing might be a little more difficult...:(
So I would rather add another nation.:goodjob: But, I must say that I never managed to choose which one to add. :dunno:
Denmark, Sweden or Prussia would seem fine to me, but I can understand why other wouldn't want to do it...
raystuttgart Jan 11, 2012, 01:50 AM I really like the religious feature.
I actually agree with Ray. It seems better if we have an equal number of protestants/catholics. Let's say we stick with five nations (2 protestants and 3 catholics). If you chose to play with an English leader, you will get three diplomatic penalties and only one bonus.
The concept "Religions: Protestants and Catholics" is my main reason for wanting to add another European Nation.
I really believe it would be much better to keep the religions in balance.
Denmark, Sweden or Prussia would seem fine to me, but I can understand why other wouldn't want to do it...
Russia would generally be the most historically correct. (Alaska)
However, Russia is Orthodox (a 3rd Religion) and I don't want to do a 3rd Religion.
A lot of people in the German community want to have Prussia, but I can see, why people here don't like that.
It really is not historically correct considering the New World.
Sweden was there very shortly and very unsuccessful.
Brandenburg was there also very shortly and even less successful.
Of course, Denmark was not as successful as the European Nations already implemented.
(If "Greenland" is not counted as "New World", which is valid of course.)
But even if "Greenland" does not count, Denmark had Colonies in the Caribbean for quite some time.
(They were much more successful than Sweden.)
So from all possible Nations, I believe, that Denmark is the best. :)
So I guess, we have 2 "good" options:
A) We implement Denmark as 6th major European Nation and have Religions balanced
B) We stick with 5 major European Nations and have Religions unbalanced
agaro Jan 11, 2012, 03:23 AM While historical accuracy is important, I believe balancing gameplay and giving all players equal chance is more important.
- 2 Religions is the basic theme of this mod, then it would seem appropriate to have 3 nations for each religion, rather than some players getting an advantage just by picking catholic nations.
- Happy to have Denmark as the next most likely protestant nation (plus I have a Danish surname)
I also don't support correct historical latitudinal placement of the nations. I believe the nations in the temperate regions get a big gameplay advantage and this is increasing in these mods due to more resource options and cotton becoming more important for transport. But at least placement is random now. It would be more of a problem if I could pick nations I knew were going into temperate regions.
Also historical accuracy loses some relevance once a map other than the Americas is used, which is most of the time.
raystuttgart Jan 11, 2012, 03:31 AM I also don't support correct historical placement of the nations.
So ok, you guys don't want it and it is not important to myself either.
It would have been easy to implement and a GameOption, but let us forget about it.
--------------
About Denmark as 6th major European Nation:
Gomer does not like it but does not object.
KJ did not tell his opinion yet.
All others seem to like it.
So unless KJ will object, I think we can consider this as planned. :)
(We will see, when we actually implement. Important for me is to do it before "Religions: Protestants and Catholics", which will be a later Release of course.)
Androrc the Orc Jan 11, 2012, 12:13 PM In regards to which protestant nation to include, I think Sweden is a more appropriate choice, because:
1) Sweden was a great power in Europe, unlike Denmark.
2) Even today, Greenland has a very small population. It would also be very hard for Greenland to perform the functions colonies usually do in Colonization (revolution, etc.). Not to mention it wasn't colonized during the Colonization era, but during the medieval era. As such, I don't think Denmark having Greenland is a good reason to include it as a colonizing power.
3) Sweden, on the other hand, had a colony (New Sweden) which is more appropriate for what Colonization models for the most part (settler colony, etc.), and which could conceivably have had a revolution had it lasted.
raystuttgart Jan 11, 2012, 12:19 PM 3) Sweden, on the other hand, had a colony (New Sweden) which is more appropriate for what Colonization models for the most part (settler colony, etc.), and which could conceivably have had a revolution had it lasted.
Even when ignoring Greenland, Denmark was much more successful in the New World and also over a longer time, than Sweden. :)
(Denmark had colonies in the Caribbean.)
KJ Jansson Jan 13, 2012, 05:15 AM I guess to be better to include not exactly Denmark, but Kalmar Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalmar_Union) as an union of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. It would be much more correct at least at the beginning of colonization period (1492). As a variant "Realm of Denmark–Norway".
The Kalmar Union (Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish: Kalmarunionen Latin: Unio Calmariensis) is a historiographical term meaning a series of personal unions (1397–1523) that united the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway (with Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and, prior to their annexation by Scotland in 1471, Shetland and Orkney), and Sweden (including Finland) under a single monarch, though intermittently and with a population fewer than 3 million.
The countries had not technically given up their sovereignty or even their independence, but in practice, they were not autonomous, the common monarch holding sovereignty and, in practice, leading foreign policy; diverging interests (especially the Swedish nobility's dissatisfaction over the dominant role played by Denmark and Holstein) gave rise to a conflict that would hamper the union in several intervals from the 1430s until its breakup in 1523 when Gustav Vasa became king of Sweden.
Norway and its overseas dependencies continued to remain a part of the realm of Denmark–Norway under the Oldenburg dynasty for several centuries after the dissolution (until 1814).
I'd like also to return to my old proposal (http://www.civforum.de/showpost.php?p=3990799&postcount=11)concerning new civilizations:
Each main civilization must have own coefficient of "Liberty Bell production".
Now each main civilization produces Liberty Bells at the same rate. It means each young founded civilization (New England, etc) try to be independent as soon as possible. This is a wrong and too simplified point of view.
Some civilizations are growing in size and their Kings were very happy, they supported new territories of their Kingdoms by money, send supporting military forces, etc.
Unfortunately this very important moment is absent in CivIVColonization.
Please, remember that to win the WOI is only one of possible options to play.
raystuttgart Jan 13, 2012, 05:43 AM I guess to be better to include not exactly Denmark, but Kalmar Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalmar_Union) as an union of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
I don't really like the suggestion "Kalmar Union". :dunno:
First almost nobody (not being Scandinavian or really deep into histroy) has heard of the term "Kalmar Union".
And also, as you have said too, it broke up very soon after New World has been discovered. (About 30 years later.)
Denmark-Norway would be fine for me. :)
I'd like also to return to my old proposal (http://www.civforum.de/showpost.php?p=3990799&postcount=11)concerning new civilizations:
That suggestion is absolutely too heavy for my taste. :(
KJ Jansson Jan 13, 2012, 06:39 AM I don't really like the suggestion "Kalmar Union". :dunno:

Ok, maybe "Denmark-Norway Realm" or even better "Commonwealth of the Scandinavian Realm"
Det Skandinaviske Riksfællegsskap (the Commonwealth of the Scandinavian Realm, henceforth the SR) is a multi-national state composed of independent national states in personal union with the Oldenburg monarchy residing in Køpenhavn (Copenhagen), Denmark.
Details here (http://ib.frath.net/w/Scandinavian_Realm).
First almost nobody has heard of .....
This is one of the most interesting part of modding. You all the time find a new information and share your knowledge with the players.
orlanth Jan 14, 2012, 09:59 AM I'd agree it makes sense for history and balance to include a Scandinavian power of some kind, which specific one to include is a tough question. There were certainly a lot of political shifts and groupings between them across history, a good compromise to satisfy everyone could be to use Scandinavia and Scandinavian Colonies.
colonialfan Jan 15, 2012, 04:20 PM Hi guys,
I'm still in favor of having Denmark as the sixth nation.
Sweden: Granted they had colonies in North America, but only from 1638-1655, and a colony in the Caribbean from 1785-1878. Despite their European status, their presence in North America was limited and very short, and their possesion within the Caribbean was gained after the WOI.
Kalmar Union: Few people have ever heard of it and it was all but dissolved by the mid 1520's. Not much of a contender by anyone's standards.
Russia: Their colonial presence starts in 1732, only 51 years before the WOI concluded, and their first colony in Alaska was not founded until 1784, a year after the WOI ended.
Prussia/Brandenburg: Held two colonial possessions in the Caribbean. One was leased from 1685-1780 from the Danish West India Company, the other was annexed from 1689-93, then returned to the Danes. Again not much of a contender.
Denmark: Inherited the claims to Greenland, through its merge with the Kingdom of Norway, although no previous European settlement in Greenland existed beyond the 15th Century, and Danish colonies in Greenland would not emerge again until the 1720's. In the Caribbean, Denmark held several possessions in the present day US Virgin Islands from 1672-1917.
So I think Denmark is the strongest contender for a sixth nation. Granted, not a European powerhouse, but a larger and longer colonial power than the other contenders listed above.
Personally I don't like the names of "Denmark-Norway Realm" or "Commonwealth of the Scandinavian Realm". Historically the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway, would be more accurate, or The Kindom of Danmark-Norge.
Androrc the Orc Jan 15, 2012, 06:17 PM So Denmark it is?
As for the name "Denmark-Norway", I think simply calling it "Denmark" would be better, as that's a more concise, practical name to use, and because it was practice to call personal unions simply by the name of the major partner (for instance, when Spain and Portugal were joined in personal union, that union was often referred to simply as "Spain" or the "Spanish Empire"; likewise the agglomerate of Habsburg territories was often called simply "Austria").

Plus I think we use adjective forms as well - i.e. not only Netherlands nation, but land is referred to as Dutch.
So keeping it to one country - i.e. Denmark and Danish - makes it simpler, rather than a composite Danish-Norwegian adjective or whatever.

I agree, let's call next European power as "Denmark". We can explain the name "Denmark" in the CivPedia, where we could mention both historically correct names as "Kalmar Union" and "Denmark-Norway Realm". It's very easy to do and every player could read this (new for many of them) information.

I think we have a decision.
We will add Denmark as 6th Major European Nation.
(We could consider "Minor European Nations" / "Latecomers" in later releases.)
And as KJ suggest, we could do some more explanation in Colopedia.
Considering work distribution:
@colonialfan:
Would you collect all necessary Data (Leaders incl. King, Citynames, Generals, Texts, ...) ?
Also some suggestion about "style" of the Leaders you suggest (peaceful / aggressive, expansive / protective, ...) based on history would be great.
@Robert:
Could you make some suggestion about Traits then (once we have the Leaders) ?
@KJ:
Would you be willing to work on graphics (Flags, UnitArtStyles, ...) ?
Also, it would be great, if you could search for Leaderhead-Graphics - incl. King - (in other mods) and upload the ones you find to SVN.
--------------
Once we have the Leaderheads and all necessary data, I will integrate Denmark in our mod, so you can work on improving it. :goodjob:

Maybe we could give the Danish Colonies a CivTrait, that is related to Ships and "Storms and Weather" ?
(Robert wanted to have something like that and they have a very long tradition as "seafarers".)
It should be relatively equal in power to the other civilization traits, of course.

Will do. I think Modular United Mods already has some of the basic info. I'll see what they have and add/amend where necessary.
Androrc the Orc Jan 16, 2012, 01:08 PM What about the following trait:
Seafaring
+1 Food production the central city plot of coastal cities
Docks, Drydocks and Shipyards 50% faster to build
+1 movement to naval units (or perhaps make them start with the Navigation I promotion)
Is that too powerful?

I think it is much too powerful. :)
This would be enough to my opinion as Civilization Trait for Danish Colonies:
Seafaring
* +1 movement for Naval units
We could however create a new Leader Trait and give it to one of the Danish Leaders:
Shipbuilder
* -25% Hammers and Tools for Docks, Drydocks, Shipyards and Naval Ports

Great ! This would actually fit more Jens Munk if I'm correct.
About Hans Egede, we should probably find a new trait (another one) or give him the enterprising trait, since he did some missioning (among Inuits).
What do you think ?

colonialfan Jan 22, 2012, 09:13 AM Hi guys,
I've done a little digging around on Jens Munk and Hans Egede. I should have their bio's done by the end of the month.
After reading about them I have tried to genralize what their major traits would be, and included bonuses from other mods that are assigned to such traits.
Jens Munk
Exploration
Munk traveled to several countries in Europe, went to both North & South America, and even the Artic circle. (Modular united mods assigns this trait +25% gold at first european contact with native villages.)
Aggressive
Munk seemed to be very combative by nature, and did serve in Danish military campaigns, although he was not particularly militeristic.
Personally I do like the seafaring trait and think it would be a better fit for Munk than the aggresion, but I understand we want to have two different types of leader for each civ.
Hans Egede
Tolerance
Establishing new colonies and introducing a new religion to a people who had no concept of Christianity. You have to be tolerant to pull that off. :)(Modular united mods assigns this trait -25% crosses needed for immigration.)
Cooperation
Managed to peacefully exist with the Inuit and not supress them by force. (Modular united mods assigns this trait with natives being more tolerant towards territory encroachment and -50% time spent in native villages learning a new skill.)
Industrious/enterprising
See above.

raystuttgart Feb 15, 2012, 01:12 AM Hi guys,
1. In TAC every European Nation got its nation specific list of ship names.
We should have that for Danish Colonies, too.
(We don't need it for "Denmark Europe".)
2. We also need a list of generals for the Danish King.
@colonialfan:
Could you create such lists ?
Androrc the Orc Feb 15, 2012, 05:40 AM The game Europa Universalis III from Paradox Games has ship names for Denmark. Here they are:

Concordia Cæsar Dannebroge David Delmenhorst Ditmarsken Draken "Dronning Louisa"

raystuttgart Feb 15, 2012, 12:43 PM Hi guys,
New European Nation Denmark is implemented and uploaded to SVN. :)
(Fully playable, but needs some finetuning.)
A few things:
1. There were massive amounts of changes involved.
So please somebody test, to make sure, that I did not forget to commit anything.
2. UnitArtStyles still need to be done.
@KJ:
I have prepared everything, so you don't need to take care of XML anymore in
\Assets\Art\units\denmark
Could you please finish up the UnitArtStyles, when you have some time.
3. Traits still need to be done.
Danish Leaders currenlty still use Traits of the Leaders I used as base for the balancing.
I will try to take care of the Traits this weekend.
colonialfan Feb 15, 2012, 05:27 PM Androrc, thanks for providing the list of Generals for the Danish king and a list of ship names. That saved me a bit of research. :D
Robert Surcouf Feb 16, 2012, 07:30 AM Hi everyone,
I've checked it and it works!
However, when you zoom on a danish city, with Hans Egede leader, I don't hear own music. There may be something missing here...With Jens Munk everything is OK
Moreover Hans Egede's icon in Military and Diplomacy advisor screens isn't nice at all (very low quality). Can't we improve this?
Edit:
Could we fix a few things in CvGameTextMgr.cpp Androrc?
bool bFirst = true;
bool bFirstCivilizationTrait = true;
bool bFirstLeaderTrait = true;

szHelpString.append(szTempBuffer);
bFirstCivilizationTrait = false;
}
if (!bFirst)

}
}
else
{

}
parseTraits(szHelpString, ((TraitTypes)iI), eCivilization, bDawnOfMan);
}

szHelpString.append(L", ");
}
}
else
{
bFirst = false;
}
parseTraits(szHelpString, ((TraitTypes)iI), eCivilization, bDawnOfMan);
}
}
Could we remove "szHelpString.append(NEWLINE)" ? It doesn't appear quite well in Dawn of Man and Victory Screen...
Could we add a space after "Leader Traits" text too?
And finally could we remove the Color part (Highlighted text) and add it in the xml files, it would be easier to edit it then...
raystuttgart Feb 16, 2012, 12:01 PM However, when you zoom on a danish city, with Hans Egede leader, I don't hear own music. There may be something missing here...With Jens Munk everything is OK
I will check that.

Maybe KJ can do this, when he got some more time. :)
(I am really bad at graphics.)
raystuttgart Feb 16, 2012, 12:22 PM I fixed the small problem with the music of Hans Egede and uploaded to SVN.
(I had a small typo ...)

Great. :goodjob:

Ah ok, now I understand. :)
Robert, your changes were probably useless ...
Currently we do not have Civilization Traits for the Leaders.
But this will probably change again today.
When I will put back Civilization Traits, then the old Variant, where you currently see the empty line after the staring brackets, will be filled.
(The "NEWLINE"s will be useful then.)
But yes, a "Space" between "Leader Traits" / "Civilization Traits" and the actual traits would look better.
Everything would look ok then.
Edit:
Simply commit your changes, when you are done and I will take a look after I have reworked the Traits.
agaro Mar 19, 2012, 07:16 AM Is it possible to play with all 6 European Nations in the same game? I always have only 4. I think I should be able to set up the start of the game to play with all 6 but I can't work it out.
I am not sure how much work is involved but can I suggest more consistent use of colours for the European Nations.
For example, currently Denmark units have a green banner with a white cross, and their cultural area is green. But in the FF screen their flag is red with a white cross, with white text for the name.
The French, Spanish and Dutch all seem to have consistent cultural areas / flags / banners.
It is the other 3 - England, Denmark, Portugal that I wonder about.
It would make more sense to me for the Portuguese to have the green cultural area, with their green flag. I am not sure of their banner, but I believe it is similar to their flag.
That leaves Denmark and England - one to go Red, one to go white.
Perhaps England to go back to White (as they were in Vanilla) but with the sexy new Union Jack flag and banner.
Then Denmark with a Red cultural area, red + white cross flag and banner.
raystuttgart Mar 19, 2012, 07:23 AM Is it possible to play with all 6 European Nations in the same game?
Of course. :)
Start a "Custom Game" and set all those Nations.
It is the other 3 - England, Denmark, Portugal that I wonder about.
England -> White (instead of Red)
Denmark -> Red (instead of Green)
Portugal -> Green (instead of White)
... ...
Sounds good to me. :)
(It would really fit better to the flags.)
@team:
Is everybody ok with that suggestion ?
@Schmiddie:
If the team agrees, would you do the changes ?
agaro Mar 19, 2012, 08:18 AM Of course. :)
Start a "Custom Game" and set all those Nations.
Do you mean that screen where I pick which Nation I want to be, and the difficulty level?
I have tried to use that, by adding the nations individually. But then it seems to leave out some of the native tribes once the game starts up. It's like once I start naming individual nations I have to make sure I name all of them (including the Natives).
raystuttgart Mar 19, 2012, 08:23 AM Do you mean that screen where I pick which Nation I want to be, and the difficulty level?

(Not going the "Quick Start"-way.)

Of course. :)
The reason is extremely simple:
We do not yet have a mapsize that includes all Nations as standard ...
(This will change.)

Maybe the white ones since their color is now white, but really whatever is easiest for you.
Schmiddie Mar 22, 2012, 12:58 AM The troops aren't "white" now, because they already use their complete own graphic.
The normal colonists/worker are partly white, because they use the assigned color "white" (CIV4CivilizationInfos.xml) for parts of their clothes like all other European nations using their color.
THIS color (and therefore the biggest part of the units) can only be changed by changing the entry in the CIV4CivilizationInfos.xml. But I currently don't understand the problem with the color. The Danish are the only ones which are partly white now...so they differ from the other nations :dunno:
raystuttgart Mar 23, 2012, 03:47 AM I saw that the Danish troops are currently using the dutch uniforms...
Yes, I used these as placeholders ...
If it is ok, I will change them into historic Danish uniforms...
That would be great. :)
raystuttgart Mar 23, 2012, 01:11 PM Hi guys,
As you know, we have switched colours of Denmark and Portugal.
(So it would fit better to their flags.)
Portugal: White -> Green
Denmark: Green -> White
I had realized that the missioning crosses of Denmark did not fit to their new colour "White".
(Missioning crosses of all other nations look good.)
This came because we have also switched missioning crosses between Denmark an Portugal.
(Portugal's original colour was "Purple" before it was changed to "White".)
Now the missioning cross of Denmark is "White with Grey border" and should thus fit to the Player colour "White".

Michael Vick May 20, 2012, 12:38 PM Hi guys,
topic has been discussed before, but I would like to pic up discussion again.
(Denmark had Greenland and even a Colony in the Caribbean for a while.)
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=310990&d=1326205974
People don't like Denmark exactly because of its nature as such a minor player in the New World. Those people are mainly fans of a "historic game", the ones that don't usually play on random maps, etc. I'm one of those, and while I definitely support the inclusion of Denmark in the mod, like Gomer_Pyle, I will probably keep Denmark out of my custom game.
I just don't want to see a big Danish colonial empire with a lot of cities that compares itself to the other main colonial empires. That is the reason why I don't want to put Denmark in my game, but I'm still glad that the decision was made to have them anyway just for all those that do want Denmark.
I wanted to suggest maybe including an option here for players that feel the same way as Gomer and I; What about say, in the custom game menu, having the option of including Denmark as a "one city challenge" civ? That would be ideal for the historic minded players, who don't want to see a big Danish Empire, but would appreciate the accuracy and historic flavor of having one Danish island in the Caribbean.
raystuttgart May 20, 2012, 01:57 PM I wanted to suggest maybe including an option here for players that feel the same way as Gomer and I; What about say, in the custom game menu, having the option of including Denmark as a "one city challenge" civ ?
Definite No to this. :)
raystuttgart Jun 15, 2012, 03:46 AM @team:
I am currently checking our old discussions and concept and I would like to ask this again:
Should we add more Major European Nations, than the current 6 we have ?
(In a later Release. Maybe Release 2.)
---------------
Reasons for me to ask this again:
1. I am currently pretty sure that we will never implement the concept of Minor European Civs / European Latecomers we once discussed.
(Efforts and risks of that concept are simply too high.)
2. There were several team members in favour of having even more European Nations.
(... but also some that were against.)
3. We would not have discussions / questions about "Could you not also add Nation X ?" that often.
4. Everybody who does not like to play with these Civs could simply deactivate them in "Custom Game".
---------------
I could imagine to also implement Sweden and Russia for example.
Both were Colonial Nations, so from a historical point, they would be ok to my opinion.
We would need to introduce a third Religion (Orthodox) for Russia, once we implement our Religion concepts, but I guess that would not add too much additional work.
It is probably also no real problem to have a distribution of Religions (across the Nations) that is a little unbalanced.
(So instead of 3 Catholics and 3 Protestants, we could also have 3 Catholics, 1 Orthodox and 4 Protestants.)
The biggest part of the work for adding more European Nations is to create the UnitArtStyles and Flags.
(Graphics for Leaderheads we could probably find.)
Without a graphical modder interested and available we could not add these new Nations anyways.
(At least not with the necessary quality.)
---------------
Just think about it. :)
Androrc the Orc Jun 18, 2012, 12:17 AM I believe Sweden is a better choice than Russia as a colonial power. The reason for that is that New Sweden was actually a settler colony (which is what colonies mostly represent in Civ4Col), while Russian America was, as far as I know, a series of trading posts and forts, and didn't have a significant amount of Russian settlers.
As the mechanics of the game are, Russian America would almost necessarily be getting a large quantity of settlers.
As such, I feel rather more enthusiastic about the addition of New Sweden and think that is the one that is more deserving of focus. Flags for New Sweden already exist, and anyhow flags are easy to make; I imagine many Swedish units have been made for Civilization 4 which could be used as UnitArtStyles. I'm not as confident about the leaderhead, but I imagine there is something that fits, too.
About the imbalance between catholic and protestant nations, I think that's solvable by enforcing a religious balance between randomly chosen nations. While we can't alter the random nation choice (it's in the EXE, not the DLL), the enforcement of the balance could be achieved by transforming the "imbalancer" into a nation, that is unused in that game, of the other religion, right after game initiation.
raystuttgart Jun 18, 2012, 02:11 AM I believe Sweden is a better choice than Russia as a colonial power.
Yes, I think so too.
But it does not necessarily mean, that we need to stop after having added Sweden.
Of course however, we would go one nation after the other.
Flags for New Sweden already exist ...
True. :)
I imagine many Swedish units have been made for Civilization 4 which could be used as UnitArtStyles. I'm not as confident about the leaderhead, but I imagine there is something that fits, too.
If we want to add Sweden (or any other new Civ), we have to do it in the same quality as we did with the other Civs.
(Some units from CivForum download base will not suffice.)
We will need to find a graphical modder to create:
UnitArtStyles for Land Units
UnitArtStyles for Ships
Without a talented graphical modder being available and interested there will not be any more Civs in this mod ...
About the imbalance between catholic and protestant nations, ...
As I said, I don't think that some small imbalance considering amounts of Catholic and Protestant nations is problematic.
Also, if we add Sweden (Protestant) we could also add Scotland (Catholic) later on ... :dunno:
I don't think we will really get into problems here. :)
---------------
Currently I just want to find out the following:
Does the team generally want to add more European Nations or not ?
colonialfan Jun 22, 2012, 04:32 PM I'm not opposed to adding another European civ, but the choice is quite limited now. The two best contenders are Sweden and Russia. One had colonies in North America for about twenty years and colonies in the Caribbean after the WOI, the other did not have a colony in North America until after the WOI. (see post #26) If I had to pick one, I would go for Sweden, but after that it would be my preference to stop with the European civs. We already have numerous native civs and I fear adding more civs to a limited size map might make things very crowded.
Also, Scotland during the timeframe of the game was largely Presbytarian (Protestant).
If the team decides for adding another civ, I'll start collecting all the needed bio and historical info.
Schmiddie Jun 22, 2012, 05:59 PM Hm, I could agree with Sweden and (maybe) Russia, but I would prefer not to add further civs (Scotland).
If we add a further nation, this will cause 1) a lot of graphic work 2) further balancing (e.g. founding father of this nation).
We should postpone thoughts about further nations after a Release 2 or 3....
raystuttgart Jun 23, 2012, 12:59 AM So ok, from the feedback I think, that we will probably include Sweden as next European Civ.
After Release 1:
colonialfan could start collecting the bios.
(Leaders, Generals, Cities, ...)
Also, we will need to collect good Leaderheads (2 colonial leaders + king).
Whenever Schmiddie signals that he is interested and got some time for the graphical part, we can start implementing.
But there is absolutely no need to hurry this. :)
Robert Surcouf Jun 23, 2012, 01:22 AM Hm, I could agree with Sweden and (maybe) Russia, but I would prefer not to add further civs (Scotland).
If we add a further nation, this will cause 1) a lot of graphic work 2) further balancing (e.g. founding father of this nation).
We should postpone thoughts about further nations after a Release 2 or 3....
I must say I agree... I don't know about adding new nations. :dunno:
Why not? But I'd rather wait and see what our release 1 looks like.
raystuttgart Jun 23, 2012, 02:55 AM But I'd rather wait and see what our release 1 looks like.
Exactly. :)
We all agree, that adding another European Nation (Sweden) will not be a topic for Release 1.
raystuttgart Nov 09, 2012, 05:33 AM @colonialfan:
Could you start collecting the data needed for Sweden ?
(Leaders, Generals, Cities, Ships, ...)
I believe, after Release 1.2, this could be one of the first topics we could include.
(It is a nice addition to my opinion and it is relatively uncritical.)
Shoobs Nov 09, 2012, 03:56 PM In this discussion I am for Russia, hands down. We need a eastern power settling in the west of "America" so as to make the game play significantly more dynamic. Annd since you are against actual Eastern powers other than Russia.... Maybe you can make them have a "late" start? /shrug
I am not, however, for Sweden as Sweden is far too close to Denmark in terms of actual goals and culture ( England, France, Portugal, Spain, Dutch and Denmark are all fairly and significantly different ).
raystuttgart Nov 10, 2012, 12:42 AM In this discussion I am for Russia, hands down.
...
I am not, however, for Sweden ...
The team has already agreed to introduce Sweden.
(And don't worry, they will be different to Denmark considering gameplay.)
At one point we might also introduce Russia.

My apologies, did not see how far the times changed in regards to the last post and the one previous.
Schmiddie Nov 13, 2012, 11:41 AM @ team,
I think there exists already a "sweden mod" in the community respectively sweden already has been added by other modder into Civ4 or Col2.
Has someone a link to a mod or to the files and/or LH? I need suggestions for my work. :)
Willi_Tell Nov 13, 2012, 12:27 PM @(no team member though, but having an answer: )
There is a mod called "Modular United Mods" (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=297504), which includes Sweden as a Civ. As it is from 2008, I have no idea about the quality... :)
raystuttgart Nov 13, 2012, 12:47 PM Hi everybody,
I will need a bit of time to search my archive. :)
(Currently still a bit focussed on checking / preparing Release 1.2 ...)
But I have uploaded 5 Screenshots of Leaderheads I like.
Maybe some of them could be used for Sweden. :dunno:
Edit:
I realized for example that the Swedish King of Col Gold was already used as Danish King in our mod.
Schmiddie Nov 18, 2012, 11:34 AM I like all with the exception of no. 2 (Goldsmid).
We could also use this one (its Martin from the Vanilla Game):
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=336327&stc=1&d=1353263203
Furthermore I have one important question:
Which colour shall we use for Sweden?
- a shade of blue (different from France)
- a shade of yellow (different from Spain)?
I prefer a shade of blue.
According to this decision I will arrange the uniforms of the units.
raystuttgart Nov 18, 2012, 11:44 AM I prefer a shade of blue.
Me too.
I was thinking of "light blue". :dunno:
Schmiddie Nov 18, 2012, 11:47 AM Yes. Something between France and Algonquian
Schmiddie Nov 18, 2012, 03:01 PM Ok, I tried seperate versions of blue and finally found the right one (also not used by other nations):
Here is my version of the veteran_cannon:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=336339&stc=1&d=1353276007
Willi_Tell Nov 18, 2012, 03:08 PM oh yea - that's exactly the right blue (http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Datei:Kn%C3%B6tel_III,_36.jpg&filetimestamp=20090329085358)! :goodjob:
orlanth Nov 18, 2012, 05:16 PM yes, I like the uniforms Schmiddie.
Maybe you should also make him really pale like my Swedish relatives! ;)
Schmiddie Nov 19, 2012, 11:29 AM Yes, I can! :D
Further Info: I will finish all units, buttons and flags by the end of this week. :)
But we need to decide what leaderhead we will use for the King and what other leaderheads...
Schmiddie Nov 19, 2012, 02:06 PM @ team:
This is just a suggestion for one of the Sweden leaderheads - and especially colonialfan maybe has a better idea:
Name: Johan Björnsson Printz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johan_Bj%C3%B6rnsson_Printz)
...Printz, who was an energetic and conscientious governor, established harmony with the local Indians....
...Printz arranged amicable relations with English settlers, initiated trade connections with the Dutch in New Netherlands, and directed several commercial enterprises within New Sweden...
Picture:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=335896&d=1352836008
raystuttgart Nov 19, 2012, 02:15 PM Yes, I agree, Johan Printz fits perfectly.
The other one should probably be Johan Rising.
(For Pedia, see Screenshot, which is from another mod of course.)
colonialfan Nov 19, 2012, 03:28 PM I agree with using both Johann Printz and Johann Risingh. I think they are the best candidates for leaderheads. In the download section of Civ4Col, (page 7, I believe)there is a New Sweden Mod. They do have an animated leaderhead, it is Adriaen van der Donck, but I'm sure Schmiddie or one of the other graphic guys could alter a few things on it to make him look a little different. Different color hair, background, etc. Might be something to look into?
raystuttgart Nov 20, 2012, 03:51 AM Might be something to look into ?
I would rather use leaderheads we don't already have.
(There are still some totally different leaderheads available.)
This one (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=335894&d=1352836008)is really great and could fit to Johann Rising.

Exactly.
But I will see what I can do with the existing leaderheads...
raystuttgart Nov 20, 2012, 05:34 AM But I will see what I can do with the existing leaderheads...
Which ones ?
What is the problem, with the one I suggested (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=335894&d=1352836008) for Johann Rising ? :dunno:
(It really is a great Leaderhead.)
Schmiddie Nov 20, 2012, 05:44 AM There is no problem, I also like this one.
But we need another one for Johan Printz and maybe I can create one which is looking a little more like him...
raystuttgart Nov 20, 2012, 05:45 AM But we need another one for Johan Printz and maybe I can create one which is looking a little more like him...
Ok, but let me search my archive a bit more, before you invest too much time.
Maybe I can find something. :dunno:
raystuttgart Nov 20, 2012, 06:44 AM What about this one (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=11732) for the Swedish King ?
Another candidate (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=9183) for Swedish King.
This Leaderhead (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=13953) is also interesting.
This leaderhead (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=14041) I also like.
Willi_Tell Nov 20, 2012, 06:49 AM Perhaps you guys may want to "loot" something from KJ's 1492 Global Colonization Mod (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=331867)?
There is also a Swedish Civ in there, and even if you like to use alternate LH, you might find at least some other "Sweden-stuff" already done (Buttons, Pedia, etc.) :)
What about this one (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=11732) for the Swedish King ?
This Leaderhead (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=13953) is also interesting.
they both look very good! :goodjob:
Schmiddie Nov 20, 2012, 07:07 AM Yes, they are all very good! Some changes of the background and they are perfekt!
raystuttgart Nov 20, 2012, 07:16 AM Ok, then maybe go with this ?
(Maybe some small adjustments ... :dunno:)
Johan Rising (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=14018) <-- Great Leaderhead :)
Johan Printz (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=13953) <-- Great Leaderhead :)
Swedish King (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=9183) <-- Good Leaderhead but maybe we can find a better one. :dunno:
Schmiddie Nov 20, 2012, 01:48 PM I have made little modifications to the possible Swedish King:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=336490&stc=1&d=1353444381
Furthermore I also like this LH for Rising and Printz:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=336491&stc=1&d=1353444459
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=336492&stc=1&d=1353444470
raystuttgart Nov 20, 2012, 01:54 PM I like your modifications to the Swedish King.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=336490&stc=1&d=1353444381
------
This one I don't like because he is looking too much like the already existing French leader Samuel de Champlain.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=336492&stc=1&d=1353444470
Please let us use Leaderheads that are not simply copies / variations of existing ones.
------
So I guess, we still have these 3 good options for Swedish Colonial Leaders.
(All of the seem to be really good quality.)
One (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=13953)
Two (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=14041)
Three (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=14018)
Which 2 of these 3 should it be then ?
I think I prefer choice Two and Three.
They are simply very characteristic. :)
Schmiddie Nov 20, 2012, 02:37 PM I would use One and Two, but One looks a little bit like the Swedish King..
colonialfan Nov 20, 2012, 05:04 PM Two and Three get my vote.:)
Schmiddie Nov 20, 2012, 11:36 PM I agree.
AbsintheRed Nov 21, 2012, 05:10 AM Two and Three get my vote.:)
I would also go with a modified Maurits van Nassau and Charles V
Robert Surcouf Nov 21, 2012, 09:51 AM Two and three look good. :goodjob:
Schmiddie Nov 22, 2012, 05:32 AM Ok, no. 2 and no. 3.
I have finished my work for Sweden and uploaded all files to the SVN transfer folder. We can implement Sweden now.
raystuttgart Nov 23, 2012, 01:15 PM I have finished my work for Sweden and uploaded all files to the SVN transfer folder. We can implement Sweden now.
Ok, I will implement Sweden tomorrow.
colonialfan Nov 23, 2012, 04:30 PM I should have the New Sweden Bio data ready for you by Sunday afternoon.
raystuttgart Nov 23, 2012, 11:48 PM I should have the New Sweden Bio data ready for you by Sunday afternoon.
Great.
I can create Sweden with Dummy-Bios first.
When I will get the correct Bios / Historical Data, I will simply replace it.
raystuttgart Nov 24, 2012, 12:54 AM Ok, as agreed, we will use leaderheads Two and Three:
(I will implement them today.)
Rising (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=14041)
Printz (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=14018)
raystuttgart Nov 24, 2012, 01:10 AM By the way:
What should be the Civilization Trait of Sweden ?
Some ideas:
1. Increased Fur and Premium Fur
(I would like to reserve that for Russia, if we ever decide to implement)
2. Increased Wood and Valuable Wood
3. Increased Ore, Silver, Gold
-------
Any other good ideas that can be done with the current Trait-System ?
Willi_Tell Nov 24, 2012, 07:02 AM I don't have a splendid idea for the Sweden traits. But after taking a look at the CIV4TraitInfos.XML here are just a few possibilities, which are (as far as I know) not used yet, but could be done with the current system:
- cheaper/faster build of certain building(s)
- free building(s) in cities
- more yield income from certain building(s)
- more yield income on city tile (?) (or what does <CityExtraYields/> exaclty do?)
- faster travel to Europe
- more strengh to certain unit(s)
Hope you all are inspired now :crazyeye:
raystuttgart Nov 24, 2012, 07:31 AM Hope you all are inspired now :crazyeye:
Basically everything that is possible for Founding Fathers is possible for a Civilization Trait (or Leader Trait).
But I am still looking for a good idea.
frontiersman Nov 24, 2012, 08:18 AM In considering a trait for a particular nationality, it's good to base it on the historical characteristics of the nationality's colonists. Here's an interesting reference in wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forest_Finns, about the majority of the original colonists of New Sweden which can provide ideas for the civilization trait:
When the settlement of New Sweden was established in 1638 in the Delaware River Valley, in the modern-day area of USA, the majority of the original settlers there were Forest Finns. The Forest Finns are credited for introducing the trade of slash-and-burn agriculture to North America, along with the craft of building log houses and ferries and the skill of getting along with the Native American Indians, who lived a very similar lifestyle to that of the Finno-Ugric Sami in Scandinavia.
raystuttgart Nov 24, 2012, 08:25 AM Ok, then I will use what my feeling told me:
They will get a Civ Trait considering Lumber / Forrests.
(And some small other aspects.)
raystuttgart Nov 24, 2012, 08:51 AM This is the list of Swedish Colonies (City Names) I have implemented for now:
Nya Stockholm
Nya Goteborg
Fort Cristina
Nya Elfsborg
Fort Trinity
Swedesboro
Fort Uppland
Nya Korsholm
Nya Vasa
Fort Mylndal
Torne
Fort Nassau
Fort Casimir
Fort Mecoponacka
Fort Carolusborg
Fort William
Fort Batenstein
Fort Christiansborg
Fort Witsen
Fort Apollonia
Carolusburg Castle
Gemoree Faktori
Accara Faktori
Saint-Bartholemy
Guadeloupe
Carolusborg
Apollonia
Fort Frederiksborg
Names for Generals (Colonial Side, Royal Side) and Names for Ships still open.
(colonialfan will probably post his suggestions soon.)
frontiersman Nov 24, 2012, 09:44 AM Here's some more colony names for New Sweden from wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Sweden, presented there as 'Permanent Settlements':
Finland, Finlandia, or Chamassungh (1641 & 1643; modern Marcus Hook, Penn.) -- I think Finlandia or Chamassungh are better names
Printztorp (1643; modern Chester, Penn.)
Tequirassy (1643; modern Eddystone, Penn.)
Tenakonk or Tinicum (1643; modern Tinicum, Penn.)
Provins, Druweeÿland, or Manaiping (1643; modern southwest Philadelphia, Penn., on Province Island on the Schuylkill River)
Minquas or Minqua's Island (1644; modern southwest Philadelphia, Penn.)
Kingsessing (1644; modern southwest Philadelphia, Penn.)
Mölndal (1645; modern Yeadon, Penn.)
Sveaborg[28][29] (c. 1649; modern Swedesboro, N.J.) -- You already have Swedesboro but this is the original name.
Sidoland (1654; modern Wilmington, Del.)
Översidolandet (1654; modern Wilmington, Del.)
Timmerön or Timber Island (1654; modern Wilmington, Del.)
Strandviken (1654; modern Wilmington, Del.)
Ammansland (1654; modern Darby, Penn.)
I see that you have both Fort Apollonia and Apollonia. Other places are known with and without the 'Fort' prefix such as Fort Casimir & Casimir, and Fort Christina & Christina. We probably should have one or the other, but not both.
colonialfan Nov 24, 2012, 11:25 AM Hi guys,
Here is the biographical info for the Swedes.
336803
336804
336805
336806
336807
For the Swedish settlements, I've tried to break it into settlements that did not have the prefix Fort attached to them and those that did. Obviously there is some overlap, and some settlements that have the prefix fort were little more than a crude military outpost.
In regards to Swedish Generals, I've tried to pick generals who lived at some point during the century New Sweden was in existence. If there are not enough generals I can add to them by widening the timeframe a little.
raystuttgart Nov 24, 2012, 12:11 PM Great.
In regards to Swedish Generals, I've tried to pick generals who lived at some point during the century New Sweden was in existence. If there are not enough generals I can add to them by widening the timeframe a little.
We should have generals for both sides (Colonies and King).
Edit:
We also still need a list of names for Ships for Sweden.
raystuttgart Nov 24, 2012, 03:02 PM @team and partners:
Most of Sweden is implemented and uploaded to SVN.
4 Todos left:
A) One of the Swedish Leaders is incorrect (Schmiddie will check)
B) Backgrounds of Swedish Leaders might need to be changed
C) Ship Names for Sweden
D) Generals for King
All of the Rest (Traits, Diplomacy, Texts, ...) is done.
Schmiddie Nov 24, 2012, 04:32 PM - Unit Graphic Files are checked.
- Swedish Leaderheads Printz and Rising are fixed and ok now
- One bug left: The Swedish King does not work correctly. When he appears ingame and after the first sequence (where the king moves), he is static and does not move bit. Any ideas? Maybe the leaderhead originally is not ok?
orlanth Nov 24, 2012, 04:37 PM I've uploaded a list of Swedish ship names I found from Wikipedia which I hope will help, however I'm not sure how to make the special characters ( Ö etc) appear correctly.
edit: I replaced the special characters with html ascii character codes
PS let's change the English name of their Trait to "Foresters", it sounds nicer :king:
Schmiddie Nov 24, 2012, 05:20 PM Great!
@ ray:
I love the music and the voices of Sweden! It's very atmospheric! :goodjob::goodjob:
I found this leaderhead - maybe it fits a little bit better as "King" as our current one?
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=336834&stc=1&d=1353802798
orlanth Nov 24, 2012, 05:33 PM I like that new King a lot! :king: the old one seems too related to the Spanish king.. those Hapsburgs do get around ;)
AbsintheRed Nov 24, 2012, 09:34 PM IMO the quality of this leaderhead (originally made as Maximillian IIRC) is not that good
Especially around the mouth area during animations
Sanotra Nov 24, 2012, 09:40 PM The new king seems more like a merchant lord than a king.
raystuttgart Nov 24, 2012, 11:34 PM I found this leaderhead - maybe it fits a little bit better as "King" as our current one?
I like that one.
If the current King Graphic is broken, simply take that one.
(Unless we find an even better candidate ...)
I've uploaded a list of Swedish ship names.
Great.
PS let's change the English name of their Trait to "Foresters", it sounds nicer :king:
Done.
Edit:
The last tiny piece that is missing is the list of Generals for Swedish King.
(colonialfan is probably working on it.)
raystuttgart Nov 25, 2012, 02:53 AM @team and partners:
Currently there are still a few bugs and small issues with Sweden.
But they will be fixed.
AbsintheRed Nov 25, 2012, 05:24 AM I like that one.
If the current King Graphic is broken, simply take that one.
(Unless we find an even better candidate ...)
I don't think your current king graphics is broken, I use that LH in RFCE
If some of the animations are not right, it's probably only a matter of some wrong links in the artdefine xmls
Alternatively you could just use different animations
On the other hand, the New LH Scmiddie showed really is broken
Schmiddie Nov 25, 2012, 07:20 AM It was broken!
But the bug is fixed now....some trouble with the graphic files...
raystuttgart Nov 25, 2012, 08:18 AM Ok, Sweden is up and running. :)
(Only a few General Names for the King still missing.)

The list of Swedish generals I had for the timeperiod was somewhat limited. Great find.:goodjob:
Schmiddie Nov 25, 2012, 11:07 AM Hm, I thought I had fixed the new leaderhead of Sweden King, but it is still broken.
Could you all please check if the LH moves or freezes after his first movement? Therefore please play a few rounds with sweden until he wants money or taxes - such an event should freeze the king.
EDIT: The original I have downloaded here in the civ forum leads to the same failure!
Schmiddie Dec 09, 2012, 11:27 AM Hi all,
after we have implemented Sweden we have only one big issue regarding European nations: Russia / the Russian tsardom
Ray and me are currently thinking about implementing them now - so that we once and for all can complete implementing new nations.
This one could be used as King / tsar (showing Peter the Great) and I have already made him working as King LH in civ col2 (special improvements are necessary for that).
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=337973&stc=1&d=1355077317
But which further LH could we use?
These could work - as Russian "sovereigns":dunno:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=337975&stc=1&d=1355077317
raystuttgart Dec 09, 2012, 12:07 PM The leaderheads for the Colonial Powers look too Arabian. :(
The leaderhead for the King would work.
What about these leaderheads ?
Baranov (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=337979&d=1355080028)
Ermak 1 (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=337980&d=1355080028)
Ermak 2 (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=17768)
I also kind of like this graphic for a Russian King, because it looks quite unique.
Tzar of Russia (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=337981&d=1355080028)
Schmiddie Dec 09, 2012, 12:35 PM Yes,
these are great:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads/bathori2_Gw8.jpg
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=337980&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1355080028
Maybe this one could also work, but looks similar to the first one:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads/rakoczi_76w.jpg
EDIT:
Uhhh, I found a great one:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads/nicholas_ii_cR9.jpg
But the uniform is from a later era (19. century maybe), therefore it is not the best choice for our mod.
raystuttgart Dec 09, 2012, 01:24 PM Actually I think these are my (current) favourites:
This leaderhead (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=337979&d=1355080028) for Alexander Baranov (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Andreyevich_Baranov) (first govenor of Siberia)
This leaderhead (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=17768) for Ermak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yermak_Timofeyevich) (known as "Conqueror of Siberia")
Both are quite unique and good quality.
Considering the King of Russia both of these alternatives would work for me.
Peter the Great (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=337973&d=1355077317)
Tzar of Russia (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=337981&d=1355080028)
Schmiddie Dec 09, 2012, 01:34 PM Hm, I'm not sure. the quality of Alex Baranov seems to be very, very bad?
raystuttgart Dec 09, 2012, 02:21 PM the quality of Alex Baranov seems to be very, very bad?
Why do you think it is bad quality ?
The quality of that leaderhead seems to be quite good.
The leaderhead might be relatively "pure", but it is well animated.
Also the leaderhead does fit to the historical figure of "Baranov".
But maybe we will find a better leaderhead. :dunno:
AbsintheRed Dec 09, 2012, 02:31 PM I agree with ray, I also like that LH as Baranov
We used the same art (or something very similar) in Age of Further Discovery for him
AbsintheRed Dec 09, 2012, 02:33 PM Btw, so many hungarian LHs as options :)
I can see Kossuth, Rakóczi, and Báthory among the suggestions
Not sure which one would be suited best for Ermak
raystuttgart Dec 09, 2012, 02:38 PM Well, we are still looking for good candidates.
No need to make a decision today. :)
AbsintheRed Dec 09, 2012, 02:41 PM Yeah, I checked, and we used exactly the same LH as Baranov in Age of Discovery
Only the background was different
The LH art kinda works well for him, even if the design is rather plain
Looks similar to the real pictures of Baranov IMO
Schmiddie Dec 09, 2012, 02:54 PM Another point:
Which flags shall we use?
I think this one for the player:
http://www.nationalflaggen.de/media/flags/flagge-russland.gif
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Russia (the German people should take a look at the german version - it gives a better overview of the flags...)
I would use a version of the one above with this symbol of the tsar for the king/tsar:
https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQRMRr9wWAU0nFgd9DIPEKIDEmt9ZKuT nM9W3BEzMrvz09mdeNm
We could also use a version of the flag of the Romanows:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=337994&stc=1&d=1355090230

Great! I like both flags ! I vote for the first too... :goodjob:
Schmiddie Dec 10, 2012, 04:35 AM Why do you think it is bad quality ?
The quality of that leaderhead seems to be quite good.
The leaderhead might be relatively "pure", but it is well animated.
Also the leaderhead does fit to the historical figure of "Baranov".
But maybe we will find a better leaderhead. :dunno:
Ok, I agree.
raystuttgart Dec 10, 2012, 04:57 AM Ok, I agree.
As I said, there is no need to hurry with decision about LHs for Russia.
Creation of the UnitArtStyles should no be impacted by this.
If you find good leaderheads, we can continue brainstorming.
We simply need something that fits (quality, atmosphere, historical characters, ...).
Maybe we could also go the other way around.
What are the historical charactes for our LHs ?
Ermak would really be a good choice.
And this LH (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=17768) would really fit to him.
But what about the 2nd one ?
Should it be Baranov or is there a better historical person ?
(Baranov lived 1746–1819, which is quite late.)
AbsintheRed Dec 10, 2012, 05:57 AM I think Baranov it a good choice
He was the first governor of Russian Alaska after all
I don't think there is a better candidate to lead the russian colonies in the mod
Schmiddie Dec 10, 2012, 07:51 AM I also agree that Baranov would be agood choice,...
colonialfan Dec 10, 2012, 04:47 PM I think Baranov is an appropriate choice. :) He did live late, but then again Russia came very late to the colonization of the Americas. The first Russian settlement was a year after the American WOI had ended.
raystuttgart Dec 11, 2012, 11:13 AM Ok great, then let us simply go with these leaderheads:
Colonial Leaders:
This leaderhead (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=337979&d=1355080028) for Alexander Baranov (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Andreyevich_Baranov) (first govenor of Siberia)
This leaderhead (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=17768) for Ermak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yermak_Timofeyevich) (known as "Conqueror of Siberia")
King:
This leaderhead (http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=337973&d=1355077317) for Peter the Great (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_the_Great)
Schmiddie Dec 11, 2012, 01:04 PM Can you give me the link for Baranov or upload it to the mod?
raystuttgart Dec 11, 2012, 01:53 PM Can you give me the link for Baranov or upload it to the mod?
Sure.
It is uploaded to:

Schmiddie Dec 11, 2012, 04:10 PM @ team
I have updated the modpack for russia with the exception of the city style.
Schmiddie Dec 13, 2012, 03:30 PM What do you think about this city style for Russia (early)?
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=338256&stc=1&d=1355437781
Any further ideas? What style could we use for Russia (late)?

I think the there is a bit of overuse of red, specially considering that the normal buildings will look a bit weird with so many red houses all around them. Nevertheless, the city style looks quite good.
Schmiddie Dec 13, 2012, 04:31 PM Yes, but this is the same with the other city styles...the "normal" buildings also don't fit with the Portugal and Spain City style....

It was only a slight comment anyway, the style is quite good. Good job :)

Schmiddie Dec 13, 2012, 11:53 PM It was only a slight comment anyway, the style is quite good. Good job :)
Don't worry.
I made only a few changes. The basic style is from another civ4 mod.
raystuttgart Dec 14, 2012, 01:50 AM Generally I like that CityStyle.
The only thing that is a bit too much for my taste are the churches with blue, red and yellow towers. :dunno:
It is a bit too much colourful.
Could their colour be changed to something less bright (and maybe only one colour) ?
colonialfan Dec 14, 2012, 03:44 PM Once again, fantastic job with the graphics Schmiddie.

Schmiddie Dec 15, 2012, 12:42 PM We should especially use names of Russian settlements in America like
- Novij Archelansk (Sitka)
- Rossiya (Fort Ross)
- Kodiak
Historic ship names:
- Kodiak
- Chirikov
etc.
raystuttgart Dec 15, 2012, 01:08 PM Here's a big list of Russian city names in XML:
Could you please shorten that list to a size comparable with the other Europeans ?
orlanth Dec 15, 2012, 01:18 PM hmm you're right Ray & Schmiddie, it is a bit long lol :p maybe colonialfan will know which cities are most historic for settlements near Russian America, and could edit the current list to narrow it down. AFAIK there were actually very few to no large settlements in Russian America, according to wikipedia the number of Russians rarely exceeded 500 at any one time. However the settlement of Siberia was a process of colonization, so settlements there could be fair to include.
colonialfan Dec 16, 2012, 03:25 PM Colonialfan, can you start the research for Russia (Names for Generals, Cities etc.)?
Sure thing. I can get them to you by the end of the week.
Schmiddie Dec 18, 2012, 01:29 PM I'm thinking about the chapel, church and cathedral...should we change the building style for Russia into typical Russian churches? Could we find good models for that?
raystuttgart Dec 18, 2012, 01:39 PM I'm thinking about the chapel, church and cathedral...should we change the building style for Russia into typical Russian churches ? Could we find good models for that ?
I am not sure about that. :dunno:
We would need to give them their own Buildings (using the same Types of BuildClasses).
It is possible of course.
But I don't think it is necessary.
raystuttgart Dec 22, 2012, 04:10 AM I have started implementing Russia.
Since it is almost Chistmas however, I am progressing relatively slowly (but surely). :)
We are still missing a lot of data (Generals, Cities, Bios) anyways.
By the way:
What should the European Harbour for Russia be ?
St. Petersburg ? :dunno:
Schmiddie Dec 22, 2012, 05:49 AM St. Petersburg sounds fine to me.
I thought about a city at the east coast of Russia - near Alaska, but did not found an appropriate one of this era.
St. Petersburg is an impressive and meaningful city...
raystuttgart Dec 22, 2012, 06:22 AM @team:
The Russian City names are done.
I have taken the list from Global Clonization: 1492 and added some nice names from the huge list orlanth has posted.
raystuttgart Dec 22, 2012, 08:16 AM @team:
I have created all pedia entries.
The only thing that is still missing is a list of about 12 good names of Generals.
raystuttgart Dec 22, 2012, 10:44 AM @team:
Russia is uploaded to SVN. :)
(The only thing that is still missing is the names of the Generals.)
NetterNico Dec 22, 2012, 12:03 PM I have started implementing Russia.
What should the European Harbour for Russia be ?
St. Petersburg ? :dunno:
Maybe Vladivostok as it is/was the most important harbour and trade centre on the east cost and by translation. means something like ruling the east.
Most of Russia's colonies did not need a harbour as they were connected by land.
St Peter is of course an impressive city but does not remind me about colonies.
Shoobs Dec 22, 2012, 12:49 PM Here are some names that you can choose from. Some of these may or may not be historical. My goal is to help, not to be overbearing or annoying.

Thanks. :goodjob:
Edit:
Now Russia is completely implemented. :)
colonialfan Dec 22, 2012, 05:03 PM Hi guys,
Not sure what names of generals you have, but here is a list of Russian Field Marshalls from 1700-1790.
338940
Also here is a list of Russian settlement names in Alaska with their pronouncation in Russian where possible.
338941
I did compose the bio's for Russia, the Russsian monarchy, Ermak and Baranov, but if they are not needed, no worries.
raystuttgart Dec 23, 2012, 12:32 AM Not sure what names of generals you have, but here is a list of Russian Field Marshalls from 1700-1790.
Ok, I have used these generals now.
Also here is a list of Russian settlement names in Alaska with their pronouncation in Russian where possible.
Most of these have already been in the list.
But I have taken some from your list which were missing and replaced the ones I had taken as fill ups from orlanths long list.
I did compose the bio's for Russia, the Russsian monarchy, Ermak and Baranov, but if they are not needed, no worries.
If you want to, you can simply check the bios that are currently implemented.
If you like to improve or exchange, go ahead.
--------
I only wanted to implement Russia before christmas, so the team can play / test with it during the holidays. :)
(The few other changes that are currently planned for Release 1.3 will not have any effects on savegames.)
colonialfan Dec 23, 2012, 03:48 PM Thanks to Orlanth and Shoobs for providing info on Russia, any help is always appreciated.:goodjob:
However, I have noticed the bio's from some mods out there (and not just Colonization mods), are simply cut and pasted from Wikipedia. Not sure what legal issues this causes if any, and besides, I sometimes find Wikipedia is not always that reliable.
Reading through the thread, I couldn't see where the bio's came from. If the bio's are from one of Orlanth's mods, then I'm sure they are fine. If they are from one of the other mods floating out there then I might just give the bio's a once over as long as no-one has any objection.
raystuttgart Dec 23, 2012, 03:51 PM If they are from one of the other mods floating out there then I might just give the bio's a once over as long as no-one has any objection.
I took the bios from KJ's Global Colonization: 1492.
But as I said, go ahead and improve or exchange in any way you like.
