View Full Version : Freeciv
Thue Dec 27, 2000, 11:57 AM What forum would be complete without a mention of <A HREF="http://www.freeciv.org">freeciv</A>, so here it is. Freeciv is open source, so it is free and the source code is available. Go play! You may also want to take a look at <A HREF="http://meta.freeciv.org">the currently running games listing</A>
While freeciv may not quite as good as SMAC IMO (yet), there is a good chance you will never try civ 2 again after having tried freeciv.
Freeciv has:
<UL> build queues.
better Fog of War than civ 2.
is implemented as client-server, and so easily supports all kind of multiplayer and networked play.
has MUCH better goto implementation, with airplanes automatically stopping in cities to refuel. Also, when giving the goto order you can see the route the unit is going to take marked on the map.
Shared vision option in diplomacy.
lots of other things I don't want to mention here.
Just a few gotchas:
<UL> Ai players can't do diplomacy yet.
We support almost all the major operating systems, but the game is a little flaky on bizarre OS'es like windows http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif
damunzy Jan 03, 2001, 12:10 AM Another great Civ type game.

Achinz Oct 12, 2003, 12:25 AM Add my endorsement as well. Although designed with MP in mind, Freeciv also provides an interesting change from Civ2. Try playing OCC as I did (see the thread by tonic in the Apolyton Freeciv forum).
Of course one big plus is that it's Open Source and a community effort. A big pat on the back for the team in this successful collective effort.
jodox Jan 03, 2004, 01:16 PM doesnt freeciv only work for linux?
Achinz Jan 17, 2004, 07:08 PM No, there are versions for other OS. See the url given by Thue in the start of this thread for the Windows files.
CapTVK Mar 22, 2006, 01:42 PM Amazing, the thread is still here. Just to let you know there´s a new beta out (testers welcome) 2.1.0 with a new set of graphics (Amplio) enjoy.

Dox4242 Aug 31, 2007, 08:09 PM Think of Freeciv as Civ1 + Civ2 + 80% of the features you always wanted in those games. ;)
aberwak Oct 18, 2007, 11:38 AM Freeciv 2.1.0 is now available as a release candidate.
It's an interesting game. I've tried a few games, but keep getting frustrated by the tabs (tabs for city production, for example). I like the SDL layout, except I can't seem to load my saved games. Nevertheless, it's still a good game to carry around on a USB flash drive.
himasaram Oct 28, 2007, 09:06 PM ...and now a golden release of 2.1.0 is available! :)
The load game issue in the SDL client has been remedied in this version.
Macha Oct 29, 2007, 02:30 PM Did HTML work when the first two were posted or something?

Please, stop your useless crusade against a perfectly legal freeware initiative.
bob bobato Feb 15, 2008, 06:56 PM Wow, this thread is over 7 years old, & PEOPLE ARE STILL POSTING!!!!!
Lone Wolf Feb 19, 2008, 09:14 AM Hey, I downloaded Freeciv last day. I actually think is is a bit better them CivII... Good work.
penvzila Apr 14, 2008, 05:27 PM Did HTML work when the first two were posted or something?
Yes, we had HTML for a while.
CivGeneral Apr 25, 2008, 09:12 PM Hmm, interesting. I hope it would work on Windows Mobile (PocketPC & Smartphones with Windows Mobile)
scy12 May 30, 2008, 01:53 PM Tried it but i couldn't get it to work.
Phlegmak May 30, 2008, 02:32 PM I've been playing it for the last few days with the SDL client. It crashes a bit but overall it works fine.
Look here:

Look for:
Freeciv-2.1.4-win32-sdl-setup.exe
I'm using Windows 98.

innonimatu Jan 22, 2009, 10:03 PM Hey, I downloaded Freeciv last day. I actually think is is a bit better them CivII... Good work.
Thanks. That comment encouraged me to try the current version, and it looks good so far! :)
eastsidebagel Jan 29, 2009, 02:45 PM This thread is damn old, it has to be the oldest one in whole CFC!
lord drake Feb 24, 2009, 05:33 PM Maybe, who knows. :)
Ondskan Feb 26, 2009, 07:01 AM The game kinda sucks...The interface is horrible IMO.
lord drake Feb 26, 2009, 08:47 AM which version do you have?
Ondskan Feb 27, 2009, 08:56 AM A pretty new one. Downloaded like some months ago.
I didn't like Civ 2 graphics neither, couldn't stand them. Actually liked Civ 1 more.
It's just that in the colour there's to much contrast and the tiles don't seem to fit with each other very well.
And the the interface in Free Civ is all about dropdown menues which is quite annoying with so much stuff.

http://www.atpm.com/3.02/images/c2.gif
Look these graphics, despite being suckier are better and easier to look at: http://www.happypenguin.org/images/fcca2.png
http://gaming.gwos.org/lib/exe/fetch.php/games:alphabetical:c:civilization_call_to_power2.j pg
Also quite good but empty.
Same for Civ 3...but modding fixed that. Still much more pleasant to look at.
Why not just ask some people here if you can use their graphics? The Civ 3 graphics made by modders could easily be used for Free Civ? There's a new project going about now to create a new civilization game but it seems its headed by a very small group of modders/programers and that might take time. Why not try to unite forces?
The thread is somewhere in Civ 3 main forum about Creation and Customization.
edit: I also think that the resolution is a problem. It's to low, making the City names take up so much place and cover so much of the little screen that you have.
Otherwise the game is good, It's a little more complicated than Civ 2/3 and that's interesting...but meh.
Rusted Armor May 12, 2009, 11:39 PM Bump. .
echosfolly Jul 28, 2009, 06:36 AM pretty neat little game
lord drake Jul 28, 2009, 07:12 AM aye, but C3C is way better. :D
mythusmage Oct 26, 2009, 06:37 PM Freeciv is a Windows game ported to Linux and Mac. I don't know about the Linux port, but the Mac version is a half-arsed job. (Anything that needs X11 as a crutch in order to run on the Mac is a half-arsed job.) You run Windows you should be fine. You run Linux you might be fine. You run Mac, be prepared for too much fussbudget stuff.
Port Freeciv to the Mac for real!
celmeo Apr 25, 2010, 11:43 PM Actually, freeciv is a linux game ported to windows.
Thorvald of Lym Apr 26, 2010, 09:52 PM I (re)acquired Freeciv just the other day. Good times. :goodjob:
BuckyRea Aug 23, 2010, 04:23 PM Here's how they avoid copyright infringement....

Instead of spearmen, they have the archers defeating tanks! That's much more reasonable, assuming you can hit down the turret gun with your arrow. ;)

Le Marchand de boeufs
lord drake Feb 20, 2011, 08:53 PM Hmmm... I wonder if I should bother getting this again... :/
last time I did I just ended up ignoring it...
jtb1127 Aug 09, 2011, 01:05 PM This game reminds me of civ III and it is almost as fun.
Cheezy the Wiz Aug 10, 2011, 09:49 AM I have major problems with this game.
It's a great concept, but it seems they copied the early games' tendency to cheat. Massively.
bvanevery Dec 20, 2011, 10:52 AM I play too much Freeciv.
