View Full Version : Sending a Camera Around the World to Fellow CFCers Faster than the First Attempt
Boundless Feb 23, 2012, 01:19 PM :w00t:SACATWTFCFTTFA:w00t:
Contre wanted a virtual vacation (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=436503), I am impatient and excitable. Because of this I proposed a second camera was launched into the unknown. Contre was happy enough for me to do this. Thus, this thread is born.
If you want to participate, please submit your name. You are submitting your name to have a camera dispatched to your location from another CFCer, you will take a photo of anything you like (suitable for CFC) and then post in onto the next poster until it returns to myself! I will then upload all the photos here.
Included with the camera will be a small notebook to write notes about the picture you took and why you took it. It may also be used for just about anything else you'd like to write to others. If you so choose, you may also send a small trinket of where you're from to the next poster. This is entirely up to you. I think I shall send Takhisis a middle finger...
CivCube Feb 23, 2012, 01:33 PM SACATWTFCFTTFA: It's like Sacagawea if Contre was Lewis and Clark.
All right, I'll jump in on this too.
downtown Feb 23, 2012, 01:33 PM Godwynn has the camera now.
In other news, I'm locking my bedroom door, as he has threatened to photograph me while I'm asleep.
VRWCAgent Feb 23, 2012, 01:36 PM Don't know if you're wanting different people than are participating in Contre's camera or not, but if you're willing to accept participation in both, I'd love to be involved!
rugbyLEAGUEfan Feb 23, 2012, 01:43 PM Same here .
And is there anything more charming than a cute British girl saying "shall"?
madviking Feb 23, 2012, 01:46 PM I'll pass on this one for someone else (coughowenglyndwrcough) to get in on the action. But I'll follow you guys.
Valka D'Ur Feb 23, 2012, 02:01 PM I'm in! :)
Kan' Sharuminar Feb 23, 2012, 02:17 PM Yeah, I'm in. If I botch one photo I have a chance with another.
warpus Feb 23, 2012, 03:35 PM Sign me up!
ParadigmShifter Feb 23, 2012, 03:41 PM I'm from Liverpool, send me all your cameras. I'm totally not going to steal them or anything.
Cutlass Feb 23, 2012, 04:07 PM I'll be in.
contre Feb 23, 2012, 04:41 PM I'm in. If I might be so bold as to give recommendations... if you have more users sign up than you have picture slots, bias in favour of those who aren't getting my camera.
Disgustipated Feb 23, 2012, 04:42 PM cool idea. I didn't hear about the first thread, or first one, but I'm up for this one.
If it is international, just tell me how to send it international mail (I have no idea), and I'm in. I live in Las Vegas. I think I can think of something off the beaten path.
VRWCAgent Feb 23, 2012, 04:44 PM I'm in. If I might be so bold as to give recommendations... if you have more users sign up than you have picture slots, bias in favour of those who aren't getting my camera.
Yeah, that's a good idea. I'll drop out to make room for a round the world newbie.
Verarde Feb 23, 2012, 05:05 PM I would be interested....I'll see if my dad is okay with it.
Owen Glyndwr Feb 23, 2012, 05:10 PM I'm intrigued. Count me in.
Kan' Sharuminar Feb 23, 2012, 05:13 PM I'm from Liverpool, send me all your cameras. I'm totally not going to steal them or anything.
Well yeah, it's not a hubcap.
I'm in. If I might be so bold as to give recommendations... if you have more users sign up than you have picture slots, bias in favour of those who aren't getting my camera.
Also a good idea.
peter grimes Feb 23, 2012, 06:55 PM Sign me up. New York City, USA.
But if there are multiple NYers, then feel free to bump me for someone more interesting ;)
LucyDuke Feb 23, 2012, 08:46 PM I'm in. If I might be so bold as to give recommendations... if you have more users sign up than you have picture slots, bias in favour of those who aren't getting my camera.
Yeah, this. Rhode Island unless there aren't slots for repeat photographers.
mangxema Feb 23, 2012, 08:53 PM I can fill in if you need me to, but to be honest I'm not sure what I could get that's different from contre's. I live in a beach town. I only have so much to work with.
Also, I don't know if this has been mentioned in the other thread, but I would love to see some of these pictures.
madviking Feb 23, 2012, 09:02 PM I'll pass on this one for someone else (coughowenglyndwrcough) to get in on the action. But I'll follow you guys.
I'm intrigued. Count me in.
HA! It worked!
IdiotsOpposite Feb 23, 2012, 09:42 PM I'd be willing, if you don't mind. Spokane, WA.
So, do you need my address for this?
Ajidica Feb 23, 2012, 09:49 PM If you need someone for Minnesota, I'm in.
LucyDuke Feb 23, 2012, 11:00 PM So, do you need my address for this?
With the other one we're giving our mailing addresses to the people before us in the route. So only the person sending it to you needs your address. Boundless should only need your city to plan the route, then you'll know who to PM.
In contre's, he specified if there's someone you're uncomfortable about giving your address to, that he would try to work around that. I assume Boundless will be willing to do the same?
IdiotsOpposite Feb 23, 2012, 11:01 PM With the other one we're giving our mailing addresses to the people before us in the route. So only the person sending it to you needs your address. Boundless should only need your city to plan the route.
Works for me. :goodjob:
Silurian Feb 24, 2012, 06:46 AM Im in
Leonel Feb 24, 2012, 09:17 AM Interesting idea! If this is still going on around May, I might volunteer and take it down to the Oregon Dunes
classical_hero Feb 24, 2012, 10:57 AM I will have a go this time.
Boundless Feb 26, 2012, 12:47 PM Anyone else?
ParadigmShifter Feb 26, 2012, 12:49 PM I opted in.
Is it a digital camera or one of those disposable ones you can't even sell on eBay unless it has Ashley Cole naked on it?
Boundless Feb 26, 2012, 02:18 PM The latter.. :p
ParadigmShifter Feb 26, 2012, 02:20 PM Well, bumbags :( I opt out ;)
VRWCAgent Feb 26, 2012, 02:21 PM Just to clarify my earlier post. I'm definitely in unless you needed to bump me to make room for someone that didn't participate in Contre's camera funfest :)
Disgustipated Feb 26, 2012, 02:23 PM Yeah having one shot does make it a bit scary. What if I mess up the shot? I'll probably practice it on my digital camera or cell phone first. I hope I don't accidentally hit the snap photo button when taking it out of the box. :D
It's been so long since I used a manual camera. Do any places still even develop film? :)
I am looking forward to this, I want to make my shot something off the beaten path. I thought about taking a picture of slums, but our slums are just like any other slums, who wants to see that? I'll think of something. It may be me on top of a mountain overlooking the city.
VRWCAgent Feb 27, 2012, 05:19 PM Just to clarify my earlier post. I'm definitely in unless you needed to bump me to make room for someone that didn't participate in Contre's camera funfest :)
Actually, apologies but I have to bow out of this one.
illram Feb 27, 2012, 05:23 PM Saw this first time around, sounds like a cool idea, I'm in. Plenty to photograph around these parts.
Kennigit Feb 27, 2012, 05:56 PM I can be in.
Cheetah Feb 27, 2012, 06:16 PM I'm in.
Boundless Feb 29, 2012, 11:55 AM Bumping a few more times to catch enough people :D
Silurian Feb 29, 2012, 12:43 PM It is not good to bump a camera.
Boundless Feb 29, 2012, 12:54 PM Should be fine with a analogue one right? ;)
Silurian Mar 01, 2012, 07:11 AM Well they both have lenses and electronics so I would think that they would both types would be equally damaged by too much bumping.
Maybe you should do a list of people then we will know how many slots left.:)
Boundless Mar 01, 2012, 12:24 PM Well I will buy the camera this weekend and know how many slots it has.
It would be very helpful if people would give a their general location as well since I will have to work out the route..
Dreadnought Mar 01, 2012, 12:29 PM I'm down with it, though my address depends on whether I'm home or still at college when it is sent.
Silurian Mar 01, 2012, 01:49 PM Devon, UK
BSmith1068 Mar 01, 2012, 01:54 PM I'll be in. Northern Michigan, USA.
Cutlass Mar 01, 2012, 07:23 PM Hartford, Connecticut, US.
Owen Glyndwr Mar 01, 2012, 07:38 PM Santa Cruz, Northern California, US
Quintillus Mar 01, 2012, 07:45 PM Sounds fun, and I missed the first one. I'll sign up. Madison, Wisconsin, U.S.
peter grimes Mar 01, 2012, 07:58 PM New York City, USA
Valka D'Ur Mar 01, 2012, 08:08 PM Red Deer, Alberta, Canada
Kennigit Mar 01, 2012, 10:23 PM Atlanta, Georgia, USA
IdiotsOpposite Mar 07, 2012, 11:57 PM So is this still going on?
Narz Mar 08, 2012, 12:03 AM Sounds like fun, I'm in. Only thing is, I'll be on the road for a short while. But you can send to my address in Bloomfield, NJ & if I am away for that week I'll have Jamielor take a pic & pass it along.
Algeroth Mar 08, 2012, 03:02 AM If there are still slots open, I'm in.
warpus Mar 08, 2012, 10:19 AM Well I will buy the camera this weekend and know how many slots it has.
It would be very helpful if people would give a their general location as well since I will have to work out the route..
If there's room, London, Ontario, Canada.
Boundless Mar 08, 2012, 11:17 AM So is this still going on?
Sorry sorry sorry! been busy busy! Work is manic, and i've still to paint the living room! Aaraghgh!!!
warpus Mar 08, 2012, 11:23 AM We'll help you paint your living room since you are kind enough to organize this. I'll bring the pink paint
GinandTonic Mar 08, 2012, 02:28 PM Im in if you need to make up numbers.
LucyDuke Mar 08, 2012, 04:34 PM So far 27 including Verarde's maybe. I think that's about standard, so to include one or two backup shots it's probably time to close signups unless there are more than two dropouts.
I can put together a tentative route if some folks can volunteer for the international shipping. Since the first is going primarily west to east, I'd suggest this time going from England to Norway to the US to Canada to Australia. ParadigmShifter, Silurian, or GinandTonic will have to send to Kan who (unless Scotland/England doesn't count as international? In which case any of those four) will have to send to Cheetah in Norway. Cheetah will send to the US, one of the 17 Americans will have to send to Canada. Valka, warpus, or contre will have to send to Australia, and rugbyLEAGUEfan or classical hero will have to send to the UK.

classical_hero Mar 08, 2012, 04:37 PM Surely we all have a digital camera of some sort, so that means all we need to be sending around a card for the camera and that can be shipped around much easier than a whole analogue camera. Plus it will be easier than doing with an analogue camera.
Boundless Mar 08, 2012, 04:38 PM Thanks Lucy. Abaddon is willing to cover costs if anyone is iffy about international postage, but seriously.. a little light camera isn't going to cost much to post surely?

Doubt there is a universal card type between us. Mines Sony MicroSD for example...
LucyDuke Mar 08, 2012, 04:45 PM Throwaways add to the charm as well as completely solving any potential compatibility issues. I'd be totally amazed if we all had a digital camera that could take the same card. Plus the disposable can't be tampered with. Since, for example, if it were a MicroSD card going around, I would make copies and potatoshop an elephant into every previous photo.

I'm not confident about being able to afford international postage...
Warpus, it was somewhere between $10-$13 for each of us just within Canada, if I remember correctly?
Boundless, are you going to send a notebook along, like contre did?

 Canada postage is HIGH!
Valka D'Ur Mar 08, 2012, 06:24 PM Well, we did send it expresspost, to move it along a little faster. But yeah, it still would have been pricey even at normal snailmail rates, and the time savings didn't turn out all that much after all.
Canada Post is just a mere shadow of what it once was, in terms of service for a reasonable price.

Has it been privatized? There's talk of doing that here in the US, and it makes me nervous.
Valka D'Ur Mar 08, 2012, 08:40 PM Has it been privatized? There's talk of doing that here in the US, and it makes me nervous.
No, but I'm sure there are plenty of people in our current government that would love to sell it off cheap. Thing is, they closed down a lot of post offices across the country, cut back on delivery days and times, and not everybody gets door-to-door service. Our main post office - in a city of over 80,000 people - was closed down YEARS ago. Little mini-postal outlets are now to be found in neighborhood strip malls and wedged into a corner of pharmacies here and there. My closest postal outlet isn't even within walking distance. The price of postage goes up like clockwork every year, as well as fees for all kinds of other services.
A lot of people do use the 'net now instead of actually mailing letters so they barely noticed any problems during our postal strike last year. But there are still lots of people, me included, who depend on a functional postal system, since I found out that the courier companies are no fit substitute. :gripe:
Verarde Mar 08, 2012, 09:13 PM Talked to my dad. He said sure. So, I'm in. Looking forward to this.
Quintillus Mar 08, 2012, 10:22 PM Throwaways add to the charm as well as completely solving any potential compatibility issues. I like the idea of elephants in every photo. Though, it probably wouldn't be all that representative of where we actually live.
I agree it's unlikely everyone has a compatible digital camera. I was surprised that I have the same memory card type as Boundless (if it is Sony's MicroSD equivalent M2 Micro, and not Sony with regular MicroSD), but I'm sure not everyone else does.
I'd be willing to be one of the international shippers, but I am kind of in the middle of North America, so it might not work the best logistically.

I don't have a digital camera at all. I mean, I could borrow my dads, but I figured we were using a disposable.

Boundless, are you going to send a notebook along, like contre did?
Yeah, it was something like that. Mailing stuff in Canada is expensive, compared to what you pay if you want to mail it within the U.S. I used to sell tshirts online and even mailing stuff to the U.S. from Canada was a lot cheaper than mailing it within Canada..
Boundless Mar 09, 2012, 11:20 AM As with the other thread, we have several AWESOME anonymous people who are willing to help cover postage costs if we are stuck for international posters. You will need Paypal to receive help!
Valka D'Ur Mar 09, 2012, 11:53 AM I have PayPal. :)
Speaking of postage... how crazy is it that I could pay 99 cents US (which is a little over $1 CDN) for a packet of jewelry/scrapbooking doodads from Asia, get free shipping, it's delivered right to me... for cheaper than if I took the bus across town and bought the same amount of identical doodads at Michael's (craft store)?
madviking Mar 09, 2012, 12:03 PM I have PayPal. :)

Labor costs, honey.
Valka D'Ur Mar 09, 2012, 12:26 PM Labor costs, honey.
I am not your wife, girlfriend, daughter, or any other female relative of yours. I would prefer not to be called "honey" by anybody online.
Boundless Mar 12, 2012, 05:33 PM I think he was talking about bees
Valka D'Ur Mar 12, 2012, 06:00 PM Bees have ZERO to do with ordering craft supplies from Asia, unless it's to make beeswax candles, which I don't do.
classical_hero Mar 12, 2012, 08:41 PM Even though I have quit OT in general, I will still be up for this, so I can still follow this via my subscriptions.
MjM Mar 13, 2012, 02:25 PM I would like to do this if there is room.
Elta Mar 13, 2012, 03:30 PM Yeah having one shot does make it a bit scary. What if I mess up the shot? I'll probably practice it on my digital camera or cell phone first. I hope I don't accidentally hit the snap photo button when taking it out of the box. :D

Silurian Mar 13, 2012, 03:33 PM Trailer parks then
Boundless Mar 20, 2012, 04:02 PM A final bump before I get things organised...
Disgustipated Mar 20, 2012, 04:12 PM .....
Dude there are no slums here.
Seeing as you list North Las Vegas, I'd consider some of that area slums. Plus I used to live in downtown (on 10th street), that was a bit slummy. Yeah it isn't like New York slums, but what do you expect, our population isn't that high.
Just the other day on my way to work, I had to detour because of a shooting on Martin Luther King Boulevard (actually J street, but MLK was blocked off too). Some cop and little girl got shot, the suspect also died (I think maybe he killed himself?). That neighborhood isn't what I'd call a decent neighborhood. I had to detour onto H street (J street was blocked off too) on Owens. Then back up to Lake Mead Boulevard.
Cutlass Mar 20, 2012, 04:14 PM How are your numbers shaping up? If you need people t bow out to make up the numbers, let me know.

I am aware, but that area doesn't have traits to be worthy of being called anything other than a poor area in my opinion. There isn't anywhere in town that is too dangerous to go into etc
Silurian Apr 09, 2012, 07:03 AM So has this idea died with Boundless
Hygro Apr 09, 2012, 10:06 AM And where's the other camera thread?
Silurian Apr 09, 2012, 01:45 PM The thread is here.
The camera is in an igloo I believe
