I think the thing that is stopping me from playing SMAC is the fact that the game has a sci-fi feel to it and I am looking for more of a Civilization type progression.
Are there any conversions that make the game look and feel more like Civ2?

Umm...what would be the point? If you want a game that looks and feels like Civ2, you can play Civ2... http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif
I think a lot of the fun in SMAC is that sci-fi atmosphere. It takes some getting used to, but once you do it's great. Give it another chance.

Yeah, with SMAC the futuristic atmosphere is almost equal to the gameplay in terms of importance. I suppose if you changed all of the graphics and tech's.......that would be a ton of work. I can't imagine anyone doing it.
