View Full Version : Navy Promotion in G&K
CivilizationRox Apr 30, 2012, 03:30 PM Because the navy is split into 2 groups (melee and ranged), I am guessing that there will be different promotions for the melee group of the navy.
What are some of the ideas for the promotions?
notadummy Apr 30, 2012, 06:05 PM I'm guessing it will just be formatted the same as ranged land units.
anandus May 01, 2012, 12:17 AM Hadn't thought about that, but I'd guess there'd be indeed seperate promotion lines and indeed probably like land unit promotions.
Can't wait to terrorize my foe's land units with my +1 range naval units ;)
Louis XXIV May 01, 2012, 07:52 AM The most straight-forward thing is to keep most the same. Bonus vs. ships, bonus vs. cities, for example (I don't know if melee ships can attack land units, it strikes me as less likely). The only thing I can think of that will change is the +1 range.

They say melee ships can attack units on the coast. That's what I have read in other threads at least. If it is true it does seem strange to me.
Louis XXIV May 06, 2012, 10:24 PM Happened historically. Lysander rode onto the shore and killed the Athenian sailors who beached their boats. True, modern Destroyers can't do that, but the troops on the shore have a bit longer ranged weapons. With guns not quite as big, they have to go close enough that the enemy can fire back. It's not like they can land on the shore, it's essentially like bombardment except they can get hurt.
Just think of navies in Civ1 and Civ2 (aside from the Battleships getting killed by Phalanxes, the original Tank vs. Spearman).

Yes, but if the melee naval unit destroys a land unit, will it then take control of the coastal tile? This is what would be weird, not just a raid that does damage to coastal areas. Frigate captains did this regularly during the Age of Sail using shipboard marines and away parties to disrupt the enemy and find out useful info. They would wreak havoc, by blowing up outposts and forts, semaphore stations, all kinds of missions. It is just that in the game, I could see taking a destroyer and attacking the coast, but the ship should stand off and the coast tile should remain empty, if the enemy unit is destroyed. Coastal cities should and will be taken, that makes sense, but not coast tiles.
Louis XXIV May 07, 2012, 07:40 AM Well yeah, I think that's a given.

I hoped as much. Honestly,by how much do you think the Naval AI has improved?

The fact that (some) ships can take cities feels a little bit of cop out to fixing the real issue (The AI doesn't move land units across oceans). I hope I'm wrong.
A destroyer taking a city won't do much good crossing oceans without a decent amount of land units also being transported to hold their gains. This is what needs to be fixed otherwise it's pointless.
Please let me be wrong :)
