View Full Version : The Epic Quest
nickmandler Mar 01, 2003, 09:54 PM At some times, we all send units to perform nearly impossible tasks. Warriors capturing cities, workers connecting the corners of a continent, and entire armies sent into the unknown to claim territory for their distant monarch.
These tales have special significance to us - they are tales of the impossible performed, inspiration to the lowly soldiers among us. We owe so much to these fearless units, for they are truly the foundation of a magnificent empire.
Each of us has had experiences with such heroic quests; why not list some here?
nickmandler Mar 01, 2003, 10:35 PM Well, I guess I'll have to start this off. In one of my games, I sent a captured enemy worker to build a road to my capital, over 50 squares and 2 mountain ranges. It somehow survived, and there was a grand reception waiting when it arrived. Joy!
WredBeyrde Mar 01, 2003, 11:08 PM I've had a few cases of the computer doing things like that, such as slaying my guerilla army with spearmen, but not me. :( I've won some regicide games with a heroic thermonuclear intercontinental warhead, but that's probably not the type of thing you're thinking about.
Erik Mesoy Mar 01, 2003, 11:51 PM My 2hp pikeman captured a city defended by a 3hp musketman.
Lord Vetinari Mar 02, 2003, 09:03 AM My regular warrior killed 2 knights in a row!:crazyeye:
WredBeyrde Mar 02, 2003, 01:40 PM Attacking or defending?

Well, of course that's heroic! Sending a big aerodynamic chunk of steel and uranium on a suicide mission is tough, morally.
Preacher Mar 02, 2003, 04:52 PM I don't recall anything of that sort in my favor, but I can tell you that of all the Pikemen I've attacked Iroquois cities with - NONE OF THEM have ever defeated their spearman.
Lord Vetinari Mar 02, 2003, 07:24 PM @ WredBeyrde: Defending.
Erik Mesoy Mar 03, 2003, 02:04 PM My Jaguar Warrior killed a Mech Inf!
(Of course, the mech inf had killed 81 jags already, and produced a great leader...)
nickmandler Mar 03, 2003, 09:25 PM Aha... As for me, my most recent quest is thus: I'm playing on the Quaysan map, meaning that it is a giant twisted loop. If you go far enough, you're back where you started. I am going around one way, crushing systematically all resistance with my 300 cavalry. Of course, that's overkill; it's only 1000 AD, and it would only take 24 to destroy the second most powerful civ, the Egyptians. However, Quaysan is a HUGE map, so, even though 2/3 is railroad, getting those cavalry down there takes a while. In the meantime, I loaded 6 on to a transport and sent it the other way. It will land very soon, and Cleopatra will get a surprise that she won't soon forget... :) :fish:
nickmandler Mar 03, 2003, 09:26 PM Did I say I have 6 on the transport? I mean 7 and one infantry.
Elden Mar 05, 2003, 04:34 AM Well, there was the time my Spearman killed his fiftieth Tank...
;) ;)
nickmandler Mar 05, 2003, 07:59 PM Aha... under what conditions, Elden? I never have spearmen by the time Tanks are around (1100 AD)

I was joking, everyone used to talk about how there tanks were defeated by AI spearmen so I thought I'd comment on it.
Someone created a good Spearman vs Tank smiley in site feedback, I forget who, but here is the smiley.

EDIT: Spelling and a missing word
WredBeyrde Mar 06, 2003, 12:55 PM I hate those little stat-defying battles. I was adding a unit to a scenario the other day and the unit I was testing, which had an attack of 14, got slain by a warrior on grassland. That wasn't cool.
nickmandler Mar 06, 2003, 09:00 PM At least it isn't like Civ1, where a battleship would be killed after attacking 6 spearmen on average. That was all-or-nothing. Now, such "impossible kills" are very rare, but they still happen. I still get attacking cavalry killed against defending unfortified longbowmen in no-added-defense squares. It happens way too often to be random...
nickmandler Mar 10, 2003, 05:19 PM Ha! My attacking vet warrior just killed a vet knight!
Vlad Dracula Apr 13, 2003, 05:49 AM Sime civ i forgot which one pulled that invincible longbowman crap on me in one game
lord42 Apr 14, 2003, 06:47 PM I've had hopilites capture cities from spearmen before.
Also a longbowmen once killed 3 knights while defending for me.
As for civ 1 I once had an attacking battleship get killed by a catapult.
dowski Apr 15, 2003, 02:06 PM well, i think this "tale" qualifies for heroism for both the AI and my marine units.
I attacked the English with a transport full of Marines. The English had only riflemen in defense, and I mowed over their first coastal city with four marines, no units lost. I then moved on to their next coastal city, Coventry.
I used my spy and noticed that Coventry was defended by only 1 riflemen, 1 pikeman, and 1 spearman. I figured that with four marines I would have no problem capturing this city.
My first division of marines landed and attacked their riflemen. They were defated, but inflicted heavy casulties on the Riflemen, reducing them to 1 HP. With victory close at hand, I sent my next marine division against their obsolete defenders who had come to the front. after a fierce battle, my marines were defated, and the spearmen rose to defend Coventry. out to avenge their comrades, the next division of marines attacked, only to be defeated by the valiant spearmen of Coventry! being outnumbered with no chance of taking the city now, my last div of marines backed off in their transport.
while the english were valiant, they only bought themselves some time before my tanks arrived. they defeated two of the defenders (now riflemen) and one riflemen remained. in an attempt to regain the glory of my marines, i attacked the final riflemen with the last marine div in my transport, and was victorious. the marines marched into the city and soon quelled the resistors. the rest of england fell a few years later.
the end :king:
