View Full Version : Marines Suggestion
Ram Mar 10, 2003, 02:11 PM I've got a cool suggestion to add to the Marines unit, I thought of it when I was milking today (always come up with neat ideas at that time) :D
I don't think it's possible, but wouldn't it be cool if the Marines unit (or any other unit, for that matter) would be able to ATTACK ships? But - and here's the catch - the Marines WON'T be a naval unit. They would have to be carried by a naval transport of some sort, and when they attack a ship - if they win, they will not sink it, but will CAPTURE it! Meaning, you can hunt down damaged enemy ships, and add them to your fleet - which would be historiclly accuarate in some cases. What do you think?
Yoda Power Mar 10, 2003, 02:25 PM sounds good, but cant be done.
Random Observer Mar 10, 2003, 02:25 PM I think its good idea but not posible
Ram Mar 10, 2003, 02:30 PM Well, there goes that idea...
lol
Nemesis Rex Mar 10, 2003, 02:52 PM This would be great idea, but it can't be done. I thought it would a good idea if early warships had crews that could be used to board others, but I could not findany way to make it work.
Shady Mar 10, 2003, 03:07 PM I haven't tried this but couldn't ships with 0 defense be captured?

the problem is you'd be able to captuer them with any unit rather than just a marine
Shady Mar 10, 2003, 05:28 PM yeah, i was just wondering in regards to that but i of course knew it wouldnt change anything in the futility of the request.
Dom Pedro II Mar 10, 2003, 06:17 PM Would it even be possible to capture a sea unit? ... if the defense value were set to 0 that is.
Nemesis Rex Mar 10, 2003, 07:32 PM I use strength 0 ships and they die when attacked.
bhiita Mar 10, 2003, 09:43 PM I miss being able to 'bribe' the units :( It was neat trick (I can't think exactly what game, either civII or CTP) to have a blockade of ships at a choke point, have a diplomat/spy in a transport, a ship would sail up and down my blockade and I'd bribe them, if I could, the next turn.

Does the attacker have the ability to use the other ship when that happens? Because my experience has been the opposite. In the DyP mod, canoes are naval units which have 0 attack and 0 defense, and when I attacked an AI canoe with a brig (4 attack, 3 defense, looks like a caravel) I most definitely captured it. (this occurred under PTW 1.21f FWIW)
Ram Mar 12, 2003, 07:42 AM Well, I understand that setting a ship defence value to 0 would make it captureable (funny word - lol), but it would ruin a lot of the balance - Firaxis should make ships be captureable (lol), since us ordinary games can't.
Pembroke Mar 12, 2003, 08:26 AM About marines attacking ships: I have never tried this, but if a ship is carrying a unit with the bombardment ability, can you wake up that unit and bombard with it while it's on board?
Ram Mar 12, 2003, 08:46 AM I'm not sure... But I don't think so.
cavemanf16 Mar 12, 2003, 08:56 AM I think this whole 'marines attacking ships' idea would be a better special trait that they should have given the Viking Berserker unit.
Naval Power Apr 13, 2003, 06:12 PM Pembroke you can not do that. While playing DyP I stuffed Bab archers on a longboat and had it ride next to the land to pick off barbs that I set loose but they wouldent bombard.
