When I update my game to V 4.0 (or whatever the last version was) I get a few strange problems. The sound, especially the leader voices gets messed up, it has a loud echo. Also, after a few minutes I get an error like "cannot find sound.dll" and "error in Terran.exe"

Does anyone know what the problem is? I'm going to try to update it without using the new sound.dll and terran.exe but I do know if that will work.

Thanks.

I never got any of those problems, but when I updated to v4.0, something strange happened in a save game of mine. As Lal of the peacekeepers, playing on Librarian, I couldn't initiate the ascent to transcendance depite having built the voice of planet, I couldn't corner the global energy market, and I couldn't become elected as supreme leader. Its as if those things completely dissapeared from my game.
P.S. I upgraded from the original version to version 4.0 directly.

You can download the Windows XP/2000 Compability Update for SMAC from firaxis.com. It gets rid of those sound problems.

Nah I figured out the problem. My sound card was having issues with the 3d sound. I had to disable it in one of the .inis I think. It works great now.

There are 2 coomon sound conflicts (betwen sound DLLs, the game, or sound cards) affecting SMAC-X.
in your alpha centauri ini file set both eax=0 and ds3d=0.

Advice: use better descriptive thread titlesIf you had posted a more desriptive thread title indicated it was a sound issue, this thread likely would have recieved much quicker response since many have encounter the sound problem.
