hm..

Piracy is not more than robebrery.. So I woild say "yes"

And if you mean: Pirates on boats on the sea, then aslo yes. There are even today priates on the sea...

Not in the "old fashion", but there are cimrinal groups who are smugglers as well as robberies on sea...

Arr, matey...

I think that German U-Boats took the place of 'traditional' privateers in WWI.

There're still pirates today, in Indonesia e.g. The Straits of Malacca is among the busiest sea routes in the world, and occasionally you have them buggers coming out on their speedboats, armed with automatic weopans and attacking merchant vessels.

They're sophisticated and well-connected people. Re-registering and repainting the captured vessels, they then sail them elsewhere and sell the cargo. And the ship sometimes.

The navies in the region do try to patrol and escort vessels, but sometimes one or two will still get thru.

Remember that Simpsons episode where Homer has a Box Social on Mr. Burns's yacht?

"Set course for 'Hidden Pirate Island', aka Hong Kong."
