what country do you guys like to play as? i usually play as english because they get so much more people and therefore have an advantage. if im not playing them i play dutch because of the stability of the market which equals more money, and a better ship at the beginning. the other 2 are directed more towards war, and we all know how i despise confrontations http://forums.civfanatics.com/wink.gif

there is a conflict here... when you play chess, you have to confront your opponent. http://forums.civfanatics.com/wink.gif

you have a point. when i have an alternative to confrontations i go that path. i hate to be at war in civ http://forums.civfanatics.com/wink.gif. i can defend against it though.

Ah, good old Colonization. Great game!

Of the, say, 1000 games I've played, I think I've played about 999 of them as the Dutch. Yeah, I know, a bit patriottic, but it's simply the best nation in the game to play.

most definitely the best one to make money with. but, that is not always the case. because, with the english, you will get about .25% more people and that allows more colonies/armies/moneys from raw material or processed material. it also allows a wider range of materials, so if, lets say, one takes about 1000 silver to home land and price drops, one has something else to fall back on. btw, ive seen colonization at ebay for about $6.

Man, Stellar...quite a deal on Colonization at ebay...

I'd like to say that I like all four equally well...just depends on how I feel...but I have to agree with everyone so far...the Dutch are the best to play...

I like playing the French because they don't alarm the natives as much...and there is a bit of challenge...hehe

I don't like to kiss anyone's pinky ring so I get into a lot of trouble in that game...

I find that I normally play the Spanish, either to conquer the indians for the land development, or merely to make sure the computer doesn't have that advantage. I find that if I routinely "raid" the computer nations by taking over a town or two, I can get my extra people units (and most of them are specialists like fisherman or farmers, etc). If the location I just took over is in a bad defensive place, I'll remove all the people and supplies, then when you remove the last unit, the city "disbands"

Silver price usually go to 1 with me http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif

I always play French. I've never ever tried another nation. Not because I'm French, but because they're great keeping the Indian cool. Duke, it's bad to burn and loot Indian villages for your score will be less. The reason why I don't take the other nations is simple:
_ English, immigration? Not a problem. Go in a lost rumor and get a Fountain of Youth. Of course, had to load and reload 15 times but it's not cheating http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/tongue.gif
_ Dutch? Gold? You can always get gold by also getting a City of Gold in the lost rumors. Once again, load-reload might be fastidious. But a piece of advice, even ignore the "petty" 3000 or 4000 bucks a "search for treasure" can give you. The Cibola cities give at least 5000!
_ Spain? I hate war, like Stellar. And BTW, I've never burnt only one Indian village. Not even one. I'm the best peacemaker right? http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif Should work in UNO later http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif
I also trade a lot with Indians and send missionaries. But it may become annoying at the end. Indeed, when your city already reach 23 or 24 or its max capacity and convert indians keep on invading your town... You can disband them but it's annoying anyway.

Finally totally off topic but I've noticed one thing. One of the founding father is "useless". Bartholome I think (don't remember, I just know he's religious). He makes all converts assimiled as a free colonist. This is stupid because an Indian always have a +1 bonus on the free colonist concerning food, planting or lumbering. So you lose this bonus if he becomes a free colonist... http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/frown.gif

But when you get them to free guys they can be trained to veteran soldiers expert farmers and other lovely stuff.
The indians are good overall in nature gathering, but it's better to get some real experts!

I play with all races depending on my mood bit i prefer the French because they get a vet pioneer at the beginning. Except that you can gat loads of money and goods from the Indians (civ2 trade advisor:build tools and trading goods and I'll show you what cash flow is really about) especially a developed culture and then you can buy the people at the ports hehe...For this form of
trade you dont have to pay taxes
-converts are good in nature but bad in production
I never kiss his damn ring too because:
1. Why he has soooo many wifes?
2.I dont show disrespectfull attitude towards him and how can I change the one of my colonists?
3.Why does he start so many wars?
4.For this money he buys troops to kick your a** later so it gives you a much bigger chance of surviving the independence with only 1 men o war and some soldiers more than he had at the beginning
5.Jakob Fugger pays for blockaded items
6.Trading outposts ignore those blockades

I always play as the Dutch, and I always play on the American map. Then I start in South America, around the southern tip of the continent, near the Incas.
The Dutch get a Merchantman, and I have a great time selling the Incas tools and trade goods, making a tidy profit all the while. Not to mention the silver I can trade with them.
Then, when the king decides to up the tax, dump the silver in the harbor, and do away with the Incas (as long as Cortes in a Founding Father). I know, I know, very insensitive, and hard on my score, but you get TONS of gold, which comes in handy when fighting that War of Independence.

I prefer the Spanish, mainly because I like to kick the butt of everything around me early, and clear-cut all oppositon before it gets going LOL! :)

The indian village burning penalty is paltry... a single point for each village burned, when the total game score of a successful game is AT LEAST in excess of 1700, and in many cases over 2200. Heck, with custom houses by the end of the revolution I usually get a BONUS of 110ish in gold alone.

In short, the natives are usually on the best or most strategic ground, and as such should be tolerated only if they are Incas or Aztec, and willling to play nice and give me lots of silver in exchange for letting them live a few more years... and then once the silver drops, they make a mighty nice gold bonus when they topple. :)
