early period : italy or byzantium :)
high period : russians or france or turks
late period : turks or germany (TEUTONIC KNIGHTS! W00T!)

Personally in MTW I like the Spanish. The next total war game will be Viking Invasion which is the expansion for MTW and then Rome Total War will be the next new game set in Roman times and sould be released around Christmas hopefully.
