View Full Version : Compiled resources.pcx
GIDustin Apr 10, 2003, 11:10 AM I went through every resource file I could find and compiled one PCX with all the resources I could find. I believe that someone did this before, but new resources have been created since then, I even converted some 1602 resources and added them.
There were so many files to combine that I have no clue who to give credit to. Also, the resources are not sorted in any way, but I may do that eventually.
There are roughly 494 (thanks to sims2789) resources in the V6 file. I tried to avoid duplicates, but lost track after awhile. If there are any resources not in the file, PM me and I will add it. If you find errors, PM me and I will fix them. If you created any icons in the file and want credit, go ahead and post in the thread and I will edit this post.

I may make a shadows file for the resources that already have shadows, but that would be, um, well just the original ones I guess. I do not currently have the morale to make shadows for 200 resources :p

Ukas Apr 14, 2003, 10:14 AM I'll be adding one more resource with a question.
What is the secrecy behind successful shadowing? I edited this shrine resource from civ3's temple, checked and it worked fine. Then decided to do shadows for it, I have both resources.pcx and resources_shadows.pcx in my personal mod scenario folder - but the game crashed when I tried to test the resource in action.
Then renamed the resources_shadows.pcx to see if the game works without it, and it did - of course w/o shadows. I don't think there's necessarily something wrong with the pic but I can't tell where's the problem is.
What gives?:confused:

From the extensive testing I have done on resources - there is no limit to how many you can have or how many can be in Resources.pcx. The only lag time excessive resources causes is during map creation.

The ruins I sent here before and barley (4 variations) you can find in the same thread with Brewery building.
The new one is called potato. As I was thinking "does the game really need a potato resource of my make" I constantly heard my mother voice echoing in my head saying: "That is so silly, you can't ever get fed up with potatoes!" So this one is for my Mom!
The model for potato resource was really a professional. Sat still, didn't move and complain and when I was finished instead of paying I wrapped the model in aluminum foil, tossed the package in owen and ate the model - and felt good about the whole thing.

It would, but I have always liked download counters. If you upload a file with your post, it counts the download, but if you link to the File server, it doesnt. The URL in my post goes to a script on my site that counts the downloads and then redirects to the file. I have 3 files that I am "tracking" right now. Here is the URL to view the results.

Anyway, the only time that the URL is messed up is if I dont uncheck "Automatically parse URLs" when I edit the download link. I think that when Chieftess changed the title of the post, it changed the dld url as well. Anyway, I fixed it, again.

However, the background colour turns puke yellow when viewed in my Editor (latest Vanilla Civ patch) which causes the Game to freeze solid, unlike many of the other smaller resources files I've tried. Can it be fixed? (I'm the guy who requested Flint and Clay today, BTW).

I just changed the resources.pcx by converting them to .bmp through a program called Analyzer, since i don't have anything to edit them in pcx format. Anyway i converted them to .bmp and now in the game they are black squares. i have no idea why, any help would be appreciated. By the way frequently, civ3files.com will tell me sorry no remote linking. And i can't download anything.
GIDustin May 27, 2003, 12:39 PM First: Civ3 does not support BMPs. To use any resource files they must not only be in PCX, but PCX with 256 color pallette.
Second, the remote linking. This only happens when another website links to my files that hasnt first asked permission. My site, sween32's site, and one other site are the only ones with permission currently. If you are getting the error when trying to download from my site (which has been reported once before) check to make sure you are using an updated version of your web browser.

A Viking Yeti May 27, 2003, 01:10 PM I did convert them back to pcx's but i haven't looked into the 256 color thing. So when i save them as bmp's and then convert them the bmp's should be in 256 colors before i convert them to pcx's?

GIDustin May 27, 2003, 02:47 PM In doing so you may have messed up the pallette. Here is what you do: Open my PCX and save the pallette (in PSP7 in "Colors->Save Pallette") Save as whatever you want. THen open your version and do a "Colors->Load Pallette" and select the .pal you made earlier. Make sure "Nearest Color" is checked. This SHOULD solve your problems.
BTW What did you do to the file? IF you added resources you should send them to me so I can add them to this one as well. :D

It was me who created released the first units_32 sheet and Zulu took it on from there.
At least Zulu acknowledges that :)

zulu9812 Jun 02, 2003, 05:22 AM kittenOFchaos certainly did do the first units_32.pcx sheet, but it only had 50 extra icons on it. At the time I'd been struggling myself with units_32 so that file was a godsend, and it inspired me to put my file out.

GIDustin: as you know the colony box sometimes represent to wrong resource. You can solve that by having the right sequence of resources in the bic file.
I think a great solution would be if those list you are talking about would a list (with the right sequence of resources) in a bic file.
I am prepared to make those list in a bic file so you can import them into your own bic file.
P.S. Could you put a wild boar in it?

I have a few projects I am working on now, one is a simple addon to my site, the other is the MTG Mod, but if I ever run outta ideas for the MTG Mod, I may come back to this. BUT FIRST, has anyone already started a list cuz I dont wanna do more work than I have to . . .

Yes but that list could be in the bic file so you don't have the problem with the wrong resource icon in the colony box.

I've got 'pedia entries and graphics for the four I added to my mod, in case anyone's interested. I'd also like to know who to credit for the oasis, pearl oyster, marble, and rare wood icons.

I guess there really arent too many more resource icons coming out anymore. Before I release V7, lets all search everywhere for resource icons so we can make the update a good one :D

As I said a few days ago .. I LOVE them, this is awesome work. I haven't got around to using it yet (hope it works ok) but this is great, saves me tons of work. I always found the other resources files were great, but there was always one or two things from each one that I liked but to use one meant I couldnt use the other (I don't have photoshop and my paintshoppro demo ran out ages ago). This is much-needed. Thankyou very much. There's really not much to say, which is why I think most people haven't commented: they can't think of anything to say, it's perfect.
I think it would be great if you (or someone) keeps this file updated so that we can always have something which includes a comprehensive collection of all the resources done here at civfanatics.
The only suggestion I can make is that you should probably put a thanks out to all the people who designed the resource graphics included here.

And yes, tracking people down would take forever. Perhaps start making a list of credits and leave blank those who are no longer around. I will continue to update the file, but I currently dont have enough to make another version. Plus I want to get a few more shadows done.

Arne Jul 11, 2003, 02:46 AM GIDustin, how about making categories within the file? That would make it easyer to you adding new icons for the same thing and it would be easyer for users to find what they are looking for.

computerdude113 Jul 12, 2003, 01:04 PM Penguin-Camel, thanks alot for doing this, but I found quite a few mistakes, one of the larges being that you did not do all of the resources! You have 479, there are 494. I went thru your list (which was a big help, BTW, thank you again) and I fixed to the best of my ability your list.

computerdude113 Jul 12, 2003, 03:33 PM It's no problem. I do, however, have some updates I need to to do mine, aswell as I have just found out. I was missing a coal in the begining, and the list started at 1 instead of 0. Also, I labeled a few things GRAIN that should have been SPICES. I'm going to correct these. Alos, Ivory I now realize I named Elephants and I gave GAME a bunch of different names, including Deer and Antelpoe. I will make these changes and post a new, updated version once I'm done.
Quasar1011 Jul 14, 2003, 10:31 PM That's not hard to do. I had to go back and change the name of gems, because I had made gems into diamonds. That's because I had added rubies elsewhere, which are also gems. :confused:

I'm not using a red stone for jade. What I was saying that, though the correct icon showed up in the game, it did not show up correctly in the Civilopedia. But I found the problem, and fixed it. :)

I've got the small icons down pat, now I am working on the large icons for the civilopedia. For instance, I have added flowers as a luxury in the game, and inserted this as my flowerslarge.pcx for the civilopedia:

Drusus Sep 03, 2003, 04:18 AM AFAIK 34 is the maximum... anyway, you can only see 8 at once on a city screen and there's no way to use more than 8 to make citizen happy. i think, i made once a mod, where i added more luxury resources without editing the luxuryicon_small.pcx. it works without crashes but you won't see the luxury-goods in the cityscreen.

I know from the "Global Domination - MOD1" (a german mod), that the game crashes if you've a ressource in city, but not in the luxuries-small and visit the city (if using the standard luxuries_small.pcx with the big one it should work)

Plus I have set some new buildings to require new luxuries; and spiced up certain dead-end techs too, by making new luxuries available upon discovery. This is the bug I am trying to fix, that with extra luxuries, the game crashes when visiting the city screen. So this German mod had the problem all worked out?

yes, with the file added in my last post the german-mod never crashed again :cool:
