View Full Version : Strider's Empire
Strider Apr 13, 2003, 08:44 AM First off... Most of you are thinking "He's playing on emporer!! How is this going to be interesting?" Well.... Prepare to be surprised.
First off I mainly play on Regent or Monarch difficulties... So emporer is a step up for me. Second.... I've set a goal on what to win by... I was flipping through my HOF yesturday and found that I have NEVER won by a culture victory . So I decided to make this my first.
I set everything to random, civ, map, everything and started the game. Here's what I got:
Map Size: Tiny or Small (:()
Civilization: Persia (Yes! Good Civ)
Story to start soon.
(Included is my 4000 BC save)
Strider Apr 13, 2003, 10:18 AM Strider looked out over the land. His people was gathered about him.... waiting for the order.... waiting for the command... The command to settle... To make this there home. It was a perfect spot to settle.... He just couldn't say no to it.... Could he? Everyone looked on as he turned around. One word brought cheers of joy. This is where they were to settle. To live.... To create the Great persian Empire.
The spot was perfect.... Right next to a river it hosted 2 incense and 2 wheat filled tiles. With an extra 2 bonus grassland the city would grow to become great. I immediantly ordered my workers to build a road connecting the incense to the capital. I needed the happiness... I don't have time to worry about how happy the people are right now. Instead of building a warrior like I normally do first (for exploration), I set production for a spearman. Once that was built the immediantly used the wheat squares to my advantage and cranked out a settler. I decided it would be better to use a "fast expansion" approach. Instead of building spearmen to guard my settlers, I sent them out one by one... alone. This aloud me to build settlers faster... as I did not produce spearmen to guard them.
My second city was built... and to my surprise guess what I saw? A YELLOW bordor right next to my bordor. A rival civ? Less than 4 tiles from my capital? Not only were they less than 4 tiles from my capital, but there capital was 5 tiles away from mine.... I setted up communications and quickly locked them in a gpt trading getting Iron Working for 23g and 1gpt. I have been producing alphabet to make a rush for the Great Library.
To use my glorious Immortals I must have iron... Yet the only one I saw happened to be between My capial and the Zulu's capital (a mountain still in neutral terrority). How was I to get it? I can't build a city on a mountain! But I somehow found away... The settler that I had sent out found another thing of iron... on the other side of my capital.. away from the Zulu. I built the city right ontop of it and built a road to connect it to my capital. About that time I finished writing... and my capital produced my 5th settler. (The city that I had just built was my 4th city) I immediantly started to pre-build for the Great Library in my capital and I set up an embassy in the Zululand capital (they were building the oracle). Everything was going well.... To well
I haven't even started production on my glorious immortal army when guess what? The Zulu betrayed me!!! They declared war and sent 2 archers and 7 or 8 warriors into my terrority. I was not scared of them as my spearmen are easily capable of defending my cities against these foes. Either way... I decided to end my game and play again another day.

I plan on playing again tommorow. (and continueing the series)
Strider Apr 14, 2003, 06:45 PM After some slight difficulties with the game (I saved it as Persia- Monarchy and was looking for something with an emporer game... when I decided to load up the Persia- Monarchy save I was scared that I'd have to re-load  , because it was a monarchy game... It's an emporer game though...)
Here's what happened though:
When we last left our glorious persian empire it wasn't doing to glorious. Having slight economy problems and the only other civ known (the zulu) declaring war with you and sending tons of warriors/archers into your terrorties our civilzation was far from glorious.
I immediantly set up immortal production. I had 5 cities... one of which was not connected to my trade networked and I decided not to use as an immortal production center. My capital I also decided not to use... It was currently building the Great Library which I held a great chance at getting. The next turn two immortals were built and I moved them towards attack zones. Though.... to my dismay that turn Susa was taken from me. This brought my cities to 4 with only 2 producing immortals. I immediantly re-routed an immortal to re-take susa. Susa was re-taken with very little resistance and to my surprise my immortals were immortal :). I took the Zulu capital of Zimbabwe about two turns later. I did not hold it long though as my 1hp immortal failed to defend the city. I took another Zulu city up in the northern front ( have been attacking mostly in the southern area). I once again re-took Zimbabewe, but lost it again under the same circustance's. By this time the war was going much better than I expected. I had taken one Zulu city and destroyed many of there units, but my good feelings did not last. The next turn brought 6-7 archers 4-6 spearmen and about 3 warriors onto me. I quickly went to see what the Zulu would want for a peace treaty. I could get some gold and a world map (which I badly needed) + 2 techs, but I wanted to get all 4-5 techs they had, the world map, and communications with india and china. I quickly made up a plan. My immortals were posed to stike Zimbabwe. I will take the city this turn and after the city is taken I will declare peace (still the same turn). It worked rather well and I got exactly what I wanted from the Zulu. The next turn brought upon the building of the Great Library. I immediantly dropped my science down to 0% and started to enjoy the wealth.
The time after the war brought great wealth down on me. I used most of that though to rush a harbor in a far-away city later though (It needed one!), but the Great Library aloud me to zoom through the ancient ages and (as always) up to the tech education. I quickly uped my science rate and set it to feudalism. I started to pre-build the sistane chapel inside of my capital. Once feudalism was completed I started to research banking and set my capital production to Sun Tzu's Art of War.
By this time I was wondering: "This is Emporer... isn't it suppose to be almost impossible to build a wonder?," but I completed Sun Tzu's and shortly after that built the Great Wall.
Other Interesting Facts:
*After the Zulu war I founded three new cities... Two of which had dyes and the other had furs.
*India and China declared war upon each other
*The Zulu made many attempts at expanding farther, but I blocked there only path and all attempts failed.
Strider Apr 15, 2003, 10:03 AM The Great Library had aloud me to put my science to 0% while still cranking out the technologies, but to my horror, once it's effects wore away I could barely keep up with the AI research. By the time I researched gunpowder the chinese were entering the industrial ages.
Luck followed me though... and my once enemies the zulu declared war upon the chinese. Neither had iron or horse's and were stuck fighting with longbows. I quickly massed up an army of kinghts and got a military alliance with the zulu against the chinese. My second war has started. My knights ran into some trouble's though... and I lost a city due to these problems, but all my knights retreated successfully and I massed them up (and healed them all up) for another attack, but I had to make a tough choice. I could risk losing another city, but wait awhile to get military tradition (calvary!!), or I can attack with knights... and I could already see calvary in the chinese bordors. I decided to wait... and I lost Bactra to the chinese, but the next turn 17 calvary flooded into the chinese terrority and I re-took the city I lost at the start of the war and took two extras. By this time the chinese was getting alot more calvary out then I felt comfortable with. I asked them for a peace treaty and managed to get enough techs out of it to launch me into the indust ages. (At 360 AD!!)
Other Interesting Facts
* The Indian vs chinese war ended
* The Zulu lost one city to the chinese
* The Zulu vs chinese war is still going on.

China took one city from the Indian's before the war ended... Also... I've been meaning to include the saves, but keep forgetting about it. I belive this is the one with for before the Persia/Zulu vs chinese war. I'll zip the current one and post that soon.
Strider Apr 15, 2003, 03:22 PM The most current save (310 AD):

Yeah... I meant war... the game isn't even close to ending... It's only 360 AD!!
Strider Apr 16, 2003, 08:37 PM Sorry for any disappointments, but I'm not going to beable to play today... I plan on playing tommorow though, but I will also be gone This Friday-Monday. So I won't beable to play those days either.
Strider Apr 17, 2003, 06:53 PM I left my game with the Chinese furious with me... and the Zulu even madder. They zulu vs chinese war was still going on... and I was tired of the Zulu deciding that my terrority was there's to roam. I demanded that they leave or declare war. You can guess which way they chose. I immendiantly sent my immortals out to capture workers and destroy units wondering in my terrority. My army of calvary quickly massed up an attack. Ulundi fell to my glorious immortals... and then Hlogan fell to the calvary.... Imoze fell the next turn. I decided that it was safe (yet very dangerous) to switch to a democracy.... A rash and stupid move on my part, but I did it either way. 6 turns of anarchy aloud the zulu's three remaining cities to pump out a longbow man each... unluckily for them... Immortals are much stronger. By the time my anarchy was over the pesky Zulu were no more.
Now... To build up my culture and get ahead in the tech race. (Sorry... Didn't play very long)
