My priorities are:
My study. But my exam is over (and it didn't even went well http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/frown.gif http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/cry.gif). I only have to make reports of experiments, but thursday is the deadline. So whether I will be able to finish them before that or not; after thursday, it's over.
My girlfriend, not since long and first one ever. But than again, we got all the time in the world. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
The GOTM 2 results
As a result: expect them next weekend.

Congratulations on your new girlfriend, Matrix. Take all the time you need. There's no early finish bonus with her, I'm sure http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif

Congratulations with your girlfriend, Matrix. Take your time. There is probably no excitement about who won, but...

Ai ai ai, I've made a blunder: I forgot hotrod0823. Luckily he didn't stole a medal from someone or changed the rating too much: he became 26th. But still, such a mistake shouldn't happen again. I'm changing it now (don't know about Thunderfall who has to upload it http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif).

Great job Matrix.

I do have one nitpicky thing. I thought the global ranking was to be normalized. I would have expected Shadowdale's global ranking number to be 100, not 41.

It is normalized. Only, to avoid this first counting GOTM to become too important, I didn't use the full normalized score, but used the median score of this specific GOTM as old score.
So each persons Global_Ranking_ Score equals on this moment: 0,7*Median_Score+0,3*(Normalized)GOTM_Score.

I'm sorry that I didn't see the pre-censored version http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well, I actually meant that I would try to give Shadowdale a run, but looking at the scores more closely I don't know how that could even be done. In fact, I doubt that I'll be holding any global rank for very long given the level of play I read about from everyone here.

We'll have to see how all of this progresses with the combining of all of the scores. I'm thinking that I am fanatical enough to force myself to play this game every month to try to ensure that I don't drop in the global ranking, but my fiance may have other plans for me. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/spanking.gif

I know, I know: the GOTM is supposed to be just a casual, friendly game. I am WAY too competitive.

That reminds me - gotta move forward on GOTM #3.

Luckily I didn't participate in this one, or you would've all been blown away!!!!!! Mwahaha!

Question to all the people who got super high scores and finished in the 1700's.

HOW?

And to Smash: How'd you get a spaceship in like 1000 AD?

HOW?

I never really stop expanding, even while at war. I also don't worry about the growth of my cities too much until after I control the world and can safely switch to democracy. Super-growth will mushroom them up to size 20-30's in no time, while building a SS in about 100 cities at once.

In GOTM II, went straight south with my triremes (following the chain of islands) seeding new cities on the way. It was a lucky direction, but made for a really strange game. It was like, "where the hell is everyone?"

How'd you get a spaceship in like 1000 AD?

I launched a 15-3-3-1-1-1+Fusion in 1210AD

The island allowed for peaceful development

The usual stuff.Super Science City and big perfectionist cities. We love days. Many caravans/freights.Basically,OCC with a bunch of support cities for awhile.Once the SSC was finished,I then rushed improvements in all the other cities while simultaneously celebrating up the pop levels.I get the SSC pop level ASAP then do the others in stages.size 8.size 12.Then a final spurt up.

a size 6 city with courthouse, temple, and colliseum requires no luxuries in Democracy.size 7 after electronics. You can go straight to size 8 and hire scientists with The Gardens. If you want to add Michs or cathedral and
JSB you can go to size 12 without luxuries.Combine this with a SSC with Shake's running 100% science and 1 turn advances are no problem.2-4 is possible with freights.

My goal was to land by 1000ad.Might have done it if Thunderfall hadn't mucked around for so many turnshttp://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif

1225 is pretty good. Its not really, really good.At least not for some of the speed demons out there.1075 on diety(by Arii) is still the official random map record AFAIK and this was king.

A player called Solo did a 776ad landing on deity recently. But it was a second attempt on the same map.Darn impressive though

I'd like to hear from Cactus Pete. He finished in 500 CE and still got an unadjusted score higher than Smash!

At 388% and 1831 CE finish, mine is a good but not excellent effort. I could easily have launched a century earlier but my score was still increasing faster than by early finish bonus was decreasing. I needed either:
* another weeks play, or
* to have known about the x7 factor earlier, and
* to have developed lots more trade routes.

Massive exploration and massive expansion was my primary strategy. Thus I had: 14 cities in 1 CE, 51 cities in 1000 CE and 181 cities at the finish. I did change strategy a couple of times, once when I found that the GOTM bonus was x7 rather than x4 and it was already 1400 CE, and once when I started running out of days at the end of the month.

Stormerne,

I did what I do every game: set out to conquer the world ASAP.

I wish I knew why my unadjusted score is higher than Smash's. I'm suspicious that it's underservingly so. Though I don't enjoy the time-consuming aspects of launching a spaceship, I've tried it and have some appreciation for Smash's game.

If you could explain to me where the unadjusted score comes from and what it's based on (especially how it factors in game level and map size), I would be most appreciative and perhaps could give you and me both some insight as to why my unadjusted GOTMII score is relatively high.

Thanks,

Cactus Pete

I think that's one for Matrix to answer. He does that part of the scoring. I only consulted with him about formulae before the game.

O no, another error! <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/frown.gif" border=0>

First I forgot two players (hotrod0823 and radman), but this is much more serious: Cactus Pete, your score is simply way too high. You shouldn't be 11th, but...25th. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/frown.gif" border=0> Your real score isn't 1425, but 741. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/frown.gif" border=0>

The only thing I can do about it is adjust it ASAP and give you my deepest apologies. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/frown.gif" border=0> <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/frown.gif" border=0>

If there's one lesson I have learned of this GOTM, it's to be more careful! <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/angry.gif" border=0>

Apology accepted, Matrix; and, Stormerne, your query would now seem unfounded.

I do have a query for Matrix, however. What is your rationale for designing a scoring system that reduces the potential bonuses for early finishes as the game level rises? A player who finishes the game in 150 turns at Prince level has his score multiplied by 1 + 7(520 - 150)/520, or 1 + 7(.711), or 1 + 4.98, or 5.98; on the other hand, a player who finishes in the same number of turns at Emperor level (a more skillfull effort) has his score multiplied by only 1 + 7(420 - 150)/420, or 1 + 7(.643), or 1 + 4.5, or 5.5.

Matrix
Apr 16, 2001, 10:06 AM
Indeed it's harder to get a high GOTM score in at a higher difficulty and we could've used the rating instead of the normal score to calculate the GOTM score. But it really doesn't matter that much. You just can't really compare games with different difficulty levels.
