View Full Version : A question about buildings.
Grandraem Apr 22, 2003, 09:45 AM I added some buildings in the editor, like a castle keep, with defense bonuses.
When I was testing them in the game, my capital couldn't build these buildings but some of the other towns could, even though there were no resource requirements for these buildings.
I was wondering whether adding buildings with a defensive bonus made them act like walls, which aren't buildable by cities or metropolises? I couldn't figure out why the buildings weren't there for building.
Anyone who could help or give me a suggestion about this would be appreciated. Thanks :) .
Drift Apr 22, 2003, 09:56 AM Had this problem also. I'm not sure if PTW changes things with its Civil Defence but I wasn't able to add defensive improvements that would have been buildable and functional to cities and metropolises.
However, I didn't really read about the subject. I just figured the problem was impossible to get around. It could well be that there is a workaround, but at least I'm not aware of it.
Grandraem Apr 23, 2003, 04:03 AM Thanks, Drift.
Has anyone else had this problem? Or any other comments or suggestions about this, because I would really like to add some other buildings with even slight defensive bonuses.

No, you already have figured it out. Any building with a defence bonus will be treated the same way as Walls, including showing the graphics for a walled city. I think it's in one of the readmes in fact that Firaxis actually mentions this, though I'm not entirely positive about that. I do know they've mentioned it somewhere.
pdescobar Apr 23, 2003, 03:54 PM Grandraem, are you using vanilla or PTW? AFAIK, the size restriction on PTW is tied to land bombard defense since the civil defense and all the PTW DyP buildings (Stockade, Garrison, etc) with defensive bonuses but no bombard defense are buildable in larger cities.
Willem, it's not in the readme files because I just checked both of them a couple times; perhaps it was one of the chats. I'd like to find that to see exactly what was said...
Grandraem Apr 23, 2003, 09:47 PM I'm playing with PTW.
pdescobar, when you say that size restriction is tied to land bombard defense, do you mean that if you give a building a defensive bonus, but not a bombard defense, that the building will still be buildable by cities and metropolises?
Also, can you add all the air and naval defenses and will it still work? Or does adding bombard defense from those two do the same thing.
Thanks for your help by the way. :)

The short answers are "yes" and "I don't know." The long answers follow. In the test versions of DyP 1.10x playing on PTW 1.21f US, Walls have a "Bombard Defense" of 8 and a 50% "Defense Bonus" and they behave exactly like Walls in standard rules. That is, they are only buildable in "town-size" cities and cause the little city graphic to gain a wall.
Civil Defense, Garrison, and Stockade all have 25% or 50% "Defense Bonus" and zero "Bombard Defense" and are buildable in both "city-size" and "metropolis-size" cities and cause no graphical change when built in "town-size" cities. Additionally the Palace and Forbidden Palaces also have 25% "Defense Bonus" and zero "Bombard Defense" and are buildable in all city sizes, although the Palace is somewhat "special" and the others are small wonders. Additionally, there was a recent bug report from someone else using an unknown version of DyP who added bombardment defense to his palaces (which may have been standard improvements as opposed to small wonders) and found he could not build them in the larger sized cities.
Given that and the fact that in standard PTW rules, Walls have bombard defense and Civil Defense does not, I have concluded that the bombard defense is what makes a wall a wall, so to speak. Kal-El may be able to comment further since DyP is his baby; I just play it and help test it. ;) Note that I have not rigorously tested this and so things like your Air/Naval question I can't comment on.
Grandraem Apr 24, 2003, 01:44 PM Thanks PD, this solves a big problem. I thought I might have to delete my buildings with a defense bonus. When I try out air/naval defense I'll let you know. By the way, you see how above you quoted my posting, I'm not sure how to do that. I see in the reply screen a button that says quote but I haven't messed around with pressing it. Do I press that and then select text I want to quote, or do I highlight text from responses below, then hit quote? Or am I way off? If you've got the time, or someone else, please let me know, I'm still pretty new to this.
One last thing, if someone could, please let me know how exactly I post an image such as a screenshot, or a preview such as a gif image. I know about the 'Attach file' below, but that's just for attaching a downloadable file, right? Anyways, if someone has the patience to explain this, or the time;) , I'd appreciate it.
Oh, and thanks again PD.

Every message has a quote button on it. Pressing quote on a message instead of using "Post Reply" causes that post to be inserted into the text box where you enter your message along with some extra formatting around it. You can edit it as much as you want to cut it down to a specific section or put extra highlighting on something you want to point out, etc. Sometimes I quote more than one message in a reply by just copying and pasting another response from the "Topic Review" section at the bottom of the reply page and manually adding the quote formatting for the other things I am quoting. Just try it once and see. So long as you don't actually "Submit" the message after, no reply will be generated so you're free to experiment :)

The attachment option was the original way to insert images or place other files for download with a message. However, it has a very small size limit (120KB or something) and it is handled by the same server that the forums themselves run on which increases the stress on that server. The preferred method of attaching things to posts is to use the "Easy Upload" system by using the "Upload File" link at the very bottom of the page under the banner ad. With this you can upload files up to 3MB in size to a separate file server machine. You would then insert the URL of the file into your message to let people access it. If it's an image, put the URL inside [ img ] ... [ /img ] but without the extra spaces.
Grandraem Apr 24, 2003, 04:40 PM Thanks again PD,
I think I got the quote part, but I'm still unsure about posting a preview image. I know how to attach a file for downloading or accessing via the easy uploads. I know you're probably thinking  , this guy's stupid, but I'm not too competent with technical computer stuff like url's, http's, etc.
If I wanted to post a unit preview (a still picture I'd saved as a jpeg image), so that everyone viewing this posting could see it without having to download it or click it, and I'd saved the picture in my c drive under: my pictures/civpictures/unitpreview.jpg
how would I display this picture in the post. I guess I need a kind of long, thorough explanation from when I first click on post reply.
I understand if you don't want to waste your time explaining it, but if you do I'll worship your cow. :worshp:
pdescobar Apr 24, 2003, 05:17 PM OK, let's say you are playing the Civ1 succession game ;)
After your turn, you want to post a composite screenshot of the known world in 2000 BC which you created and saved with the improbable name of "D:\Temp\pdescobar_temp_Siam_2000BC.gif" You chose this name because you wanted to be pretty sure it is a unique filename to prevent later confusion ;)
So, before or during your post, you click the "File Upload" thing and in the resulting window, click the first "Browse:" button. Then, you would navigate to the file on your computer and hit open. This causes the path of the file to be displayed in the little box between "File 1:" and the Browse button. You now click "Upload" and wait for the confirmation message.
Once this is done, you go to your post and insert (without the extra spaces) the text:
[ IMG ]http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads4/pdescobar_temp_Siam_2000BC.gif[ /IMG ]
Then you click "Preview Reply" and see that where you typed the above, the preview contains the image you uploaded, like so:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads4/pdescobar_temp_Siam_2000BC.gif
You can now finish your post and submit it and all is well. Note that there is a limit of 10 images/smilies per post.
Grandraem Apr 24, 2003, 08:14 PM Thanks PD! :worshp:
