View Full Version : Adding Wonder Splashes to Vanilla Civ3. How?

Has someone figured out the logic behind the numbers associated with wonder splashes? Last time I tried to add wonders, I managed to wreck things so badly that I had to go couple of versions back with my .bic file and pediaicons. It just seemed that no matter what number I gave the wonder, game kept looking for Wonder splash for Palace, crashing each time I laid my first city. If it didn't crash there, the splash didn't play and crashed the game.

So, has someone the ins and outs of adding wonder splashes figured out?

BTW, just occured to me... Do wonders work without adding splashes? I'm a little wary of trying it right now considering my last experience with wonders. :)

I believe that the numbers correspond to the position on the buildings list in the editor +1. This has been changed in PTW, much easier.

In vanilla Civ3 the wonders are 30 - 64. There are then 10 SS components. So if your wonder is immediately after the SS components use 75 in PediaIcons.txt. If you have any other added buildings before the Wonder adjust up accordingly.

Hmm.. I naturally tried it with the actual number of the wonder in the unit list, but I didn't think of the +1. Gotta try it. Hope I won't screw anything up this time.

Thanks! :)

Got it to work. However, it didn't seem to be "position +1", but just the position itself. Or then I miscalculated the position by one. ;) Actually, I think I had had it right last time but my Akademeia splash was in 16 million colors. Like I haven't already had enough of that particular breed of errors. :D

Anyhow, it works and I'm happy. Maybe I'll even finish this little mod of mine one day.

I never understood the logic behind the number system, so when Civ crashed and told it can't find the right splash I just gave it next number. A part of my wondersplash entry in pediaicons.txt:

#WON_SPLASH_80
art\wonder splash\Freudspsychoanalysis.pcx
#WON_SPLASH_83
art\wonder splash\Maginotsplash.pcx
#WON_SPLASH_84
art\wonder splash\Zigguratsplash.pcx
#WON_SPLASH_86
art\wonder splash\Winterwarsplash.pcx

I don't have a clue why I can't use numbers 81,82 or 84.

What's the order of them in your building list (buildings-large/small for example)? Does it go like this:

Freud's
City Improvement
City Improvement
Maginot
Ziggurat
City Improvement
Winterwar

No, that's wrong, the number should be 74, you have to include 0. I ran into that problem when I first started using the MultiTool and I discovered that Gramphos originally had the numbering wrong.

PS The Palace would be #Wonder_Splash_0

Yes, that would have explained it, but it's like this:

Freud's
City Improvement
Maginot
Ziggurat
City Improvement
Winterwar

Icons, everything in this order except civilopedia entries, and civilopedia doesn't effect. I checked again with vanilla with same results. Improvements would explain two missing "slots" but where did the third one go? I have also two other slots taken in which are no improvements. Doesn't matter now that I have ptw but before I was confused because couldn't find any pattern here.

Really weird, I guess it's just that some numbers are simply reserved for other uses. Firaxis works in mysterious ways my friend.

My meager four new wonders have luckily worked so far right with their actual position numbers. Gotta hope it lasts.

I bet they will. Civ3 crashes and reports the error when it tries to load the splash in game to play it after your civ has built it. If you've seen all of them splashes "in action" they are most likely ok then.
