View Full Version : Unit preview : PirateI
Spiffor Apr 22, 2003, 04:28 PM I have started working on a new unit, the pirate.
It is a mix between the Explorer, the Guerilla and Ghandi. It might be used as a Barbarian in renaissance scenarios.
I do it by copy/pasting the interesting elements of Ghandi and the Guerilla in the Explorer's graphic. I takes much time, so it won't be complete anytime soon :( For now, I have only the default animation S and SE ready.
Here's a preview
tpasmall Apr 22, 2003, 04:39 PM I like it, very cool looking.
Ukas Apr 22, 2003, 05:48 PM Excellent!!! This I've been waiting for civ3 since civ1. :D:D:D
mrtn Apr 22, 2003, 06:21 PM Well, I don't know how to break this to you ... but I don't think you can post the completed unit, you infringe copyright if you post things from PTW. :( Unless firaxis change their position regarding ptw units before the unit is finished, of course.
Spiffor Apr 22, 2003, 06:25 PM Gah, I didn't know that.
Well, I'll continue working on it anyway (slowly, that is, because I have some RL work to do), if only for my personal enjoyment.
Update : the default anim facing north is done :)
tpasmall Apr 22, 2003, 07:46 PM Are you sure that this unit would fall under that category though? It is a unique unit, and looks nothing like the PTW versions....
Ukas Apr 22, 2003, 07:53 PM How long did it take for firaxis to say it's ok to use vanilla civ3 units anyway?
mrtn Apr 22, 2003, 08:20 PM I'm not sure of anything. If I where firaxis, I'd say yes to this unit, but I understand if they just give a general no, so they don't have to judge every unit. I think you should ask them, this would be a good *insert juridic term I've forgotten, meaning "trial run"* case.
Ukas: this is different. The vanilla units can only be used if you have vanilla civ3 (let's forget about pirated games right know). They can be used in ptw, but you got to have vanilla to play ptw, so that's ok. The reverse case isn't the same. You can use ptw units if you only have vanilla. I understand that they wouldn't be happy if someone changed 1 pixel in all ptw units and released it, saying they where modifications, and therefore ok. :crazyeye:
Ukas Apr 22, 2003, 08:27 PM Yes yes, I know that - makes sense and everything but I mean did it take long for them to say it's ok to use vanilla units after vanilla had gone gold?
Nemesis Rex Apr 22, 2003, 11:25 PM It was always OK to use vanilla units to make new units because they could only be used in Civ 3. You could only used them if you had bought the game. So user created units could only boost sales, not take away from them.
But now with PTW, a PTW unit can be added to vanilla Civ3, as can any user derived unit. So Fireaxis is rightly concerned that people will make the new units available here to people who haven't bought PTW.
I've seen people too cheap to buy PTW post requests for people to put the new units up here. That's mainly what Fireaxis is concerned with. But if you permit any user modified PTW units, people are likely to make bogus micro-changes and post it as a "new" unit.
P.S. No offense meant about "too cheap to buy PTW" to those don't wish to buy it. That was meant to refer only to those who wanted all the PTW "goodies" without paying for them.
Neomega Apr 23, 2003, 03:12 AM Hey spiffor, maybe you can click on the link that says Rhino in my name and learn how to do units with 3d models. I did the cut and paste thing once, and it is just way too much work for a mediocre unit at best.
Spiffor Apr 23, 2003, 03:21 AM NeoMega :
I've checked this link recently, and I was interested. However, I suck at everything painting, and I am only somehow skilled with copy/pasting.
Do we have access to Civ3's 3d models ?
Thx :)
Drift Apr 23, 2003, 04:30 AM Personally, I'm strongly against PTW editor being available only with PTW itself. In my opinion, Firaxis should have released the new editor and its new options as a patch to the Vanilla Civ3 and the multiplayer, new civs, units and the rest as PTW.
I have absolutely no use for multiplayer, I can live without the new civs, units, improvements and wonders, but I reallyreallyreally want the PTW editor. Now, I'm not going to pay 30 euros just to get the new editor (I would of course get also the other goodies, but frankly, with the multiplayer being meaningless to me, they are not worth 30 euros.)
Don't really know what to do. Look for a used copy I guess.
Edit: that was a bit offtopic. About the units, it's understandable that Firaxis wants to keep a tight leash on things. PTW can't really afford to lose any of its appeal on that front (2 new units - woohoo).
Mithadan Apr 23, 2003, 02:29 PM How do you looked for a used copy in Europe? I can't find any software bargain bins out here in Belgium...!

Online marketplaces I guess. For example, a Finnish gaming magazine Pelit has a pretty good online games marketplace.
Or you may get lucky and just happen to run into a bargain. I bought my Civ3 (my first copy of it) about two months ago from a flea market while looking for furniture. Cost me 10 euros which was quite reasonable in my opinion. However, I don't think PTW will show up in those places for a while. :)
Ukas Apr 23, 2003, 03:25 PM I guess there's not much more in the PTW, I consider it also as a light package for it's price. But my options were at the time to go a party (had been two previous nights in parties and bars) or buy it and go home. You know, plausible denial... "can't come, no money"

I might even buy the damn thing just to make things simpler. No more "oh a good looking scenario... ah, but it's PTW only." However, living just on the student financial aid means a very, very tight budget. Thank god for the girlfriend to share the rent with. :D
LouLong Apr 24, 2003, 04:38 AM Whatever about PTW or so, I would really like to have a pirate unit (I used the industrial swordsman for a while but it does not fit).
Sir John Apr 25, 2003, 04:43 PM great unit :D
