I shall do it to deaden my feelings for I see that those who drink ale have none. -Percy Byesshe Shelley Algernon Pondlife Feb 26, 2001, 02:45 AM [14.c4 e4 15. Nd4.... now what? If you then can get time to play Rc1 you are threatening to get the c-pawn well forward and lots of your pieces are in good supporting squares. Have I missed something?] The best lines I found for winning the rook seemd to give you a big plus from having the Queen on the long diagonal and the threat of Bh6 possibly even getting the rook back. Grade is a little complicated because my chess is intermittent and grade measures consistency as much as strength. I'm at my best with my back to the wall but it is not always possible to win from such positionshttp://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif and I "waste" points against weaker players by playing slow openings and then over-respecting their fortifications. For a long time when I played regularly my grade stayed between 1700 abd 1800 although it was nearly 2000 when I was at school. My best ever grade results have been draws with L. Cooper (BCF204 - about 2232) and G. Morrison (ELO 2295). By a very pleasant coincidence they both followed this game, more or less, until you played e5. Then those games got very dull and safehttp://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif. In fact it was over the board against Morrison that I came up with the idea of defending e6 with the queen's knight. It's a bit slow but then the h3 line is slow for White as well. I'm not going to balance this by telling you my worst results. Use your imagination. I also am really enjoying this game and the one with Anand. They are both very hard games to play I don't know who has the advantage for the long term. (Don't tell Anand. I want him to think I know what I'm doinghttp://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif) ------------------ That's not the electric light my friend, it is your vision growing dim Johan511 Feb 26, 2001, 09:18 AM 1 e4 d6 2 d4 Nf6 3 Nc3 g6 4 Nf3 Bg7 5 h3 c6 6 Be3 O-O 7 a4 b6 8 Be2 Na6 9 e5 Ne8 10 O-O Nac7 11 b4 Ne6 12 d5 cxd5 13 Nxd5 dxe5 14 Bc4 Nd6 15 Bb5 Bb7 16 c4 Now's the time for c4, it's much safter, but I should've played bb5 first, I just ended up giving you a free move. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif It may come back and bite me in the a$$ later on. ------------------ There is one thing to which I have decidely made up my mind. And I have to say that I prefer Black's position. (But that's all I'll say for now!) http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif Algernon Pondlife Feb 26, 2001, 06:00 PM 1 e4 d6 2 d4 Nf6 3 Nc3 g6 4 Nf3 Bg7 5 h3 c6 6 Be3 O-O 7 a4 b6 8 Be2 Na6 9 e5 Ne8 10 O-O Nac7 11 b4 Ne6 12 d5 cxd5 13 Nxd5 dxe5 14 Bc4 Nd6 15 Bb5 Bb7 16 c4 Nf5 At lunch time I "proved" that 16.c4 lost to ...Nf5; but when I saw you had played it I looked again. Once I saw your threat I looked deeper. Every move is a different game in this position! 16....e4 is tempting but I am not convinced. Also, there are lots of side lines that give trippled e-pawns. Almost worth going into for their novelty value, butI intend to avoid them! I get nervous when people tell me I'm doing well. As long as I think I'm losing I will battle to get better, but once I'm in front there is everything to lose. If I'm winning, I won't; but if I'm losing, my opponent has normally got a fight on his hands. ------------------ That's not the electric light my friend, it is your vision growing dim stormerne Feb 26, 2001, 06:21 PM I'm sorry Algernon, I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/blushing.gif Think of it this way: I have no comments as to whether you're winning, or even if you're doing well or not - I simply would prefer to take the black pieces myself in this position. It's partly a matter of style. Perhaps I'll keep my mouth shut in future. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/confused.gif Johan511 Feb 26, 2001, 07:03 PM Well this whole opening comes down to white being the attacker, and Black lurking in the shadows waiting for the right time to unleash his pieces. BTW, your right Pondlife c4 could lead to alot of different posistions. I'll probably take the rest of the night to look at the posistion, and I'll post first thing in the morning. ------------------ There is one thing to which I have decidely made up my mind.
