BTW, don't ask me what I'm doing in my office today, a sunday! I'm working of course http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif

Exactly http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/frown.gif Sorry for the mistake. I really meant Nf6 and that's what I entered in my own chessboard game! Anyway, what's done is done. I've corrected on my saved game. So I'm going on:

c4 Nf6 (at last! http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif)

Genghis K.

GenghisK

You can't do that! Your knight is on that square. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/lol.gif Now you are going to tell me that you meant Nf6 for your first move! Hmm...

stormerne
Apr 24, 2001, 11:12 AM
Never mind. I'll take your queen pawn. Perhaps you'll move that knight again?

To summarise...

Stormerne v. GenghisK
1. Nf3 Nc6

3. c4 Nf6
4. cd ...

stormerne

I'm sure you're going to laugh at me but I'm really bad moving knights, and there's a long time since I last played a chess game...http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif

The party is still in full swing! These knights make good targets don't they? http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif

5. e4 Nb6
6. d5 ...

So you don't like moving knights. Is that because you prefer to have two bishops in an endgame? Knights are especially good on crowded boards and when opposing pawn chains are locked together.

Did you know that when you played 1.Nc3 in the other game, you were playing what's called a "Dunst" opening (after the person that's studied it most). Another name for it is the "Sleipnir" opening. Sleipnir is the horse ridden by the god Ošin and has 8 legs, and the eight possible moves or "legs" of a knight make Sleipnir a good name for it.

GenghisK
Apr 25, 2001, 01:16 PM
Yes I've heard about the 8 foot horse in Nordic mythology (also called Meraak, something like that?) but not about the opening name.
Anyway. Do pawns appreciate horse for dinner? http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Perhaps, but that's for another time...

Sleipnir (=the slippery one) I know about. Meraak I've never heard of! (And I would know because the myths of Sleipnir are part of my religion.)

Pawn are always hungry. They are insatiable. And they are not finished with their hunt yet! What will you do: take the safe course or go for something more risky?

OK that's the safe move. The alternative was to take the d5 pawn.

I'm not always free Friday and Monday. I'm going camping for 4 days just this weekend only!

If I get time before I go I'll respond to today's moves.

stormerne
Apr 27, 2001, 05:12 AM
I do have time before I go! I'm doing this from home. You have until Monday night to decide your reply.

7. a3 Na6
8. Nc3 ...

The most natural move.

GenghisK
Apr 27, 2001, 03:45 PM
Oh, you know, I don't take 2 days to think of it. It'd be unfair, and probably useless since the fate of this game is quite already sealed... Anyway you will suffer to get my king's head

BTW, I notice with displeasure that I'm really wasting my moves. All my units are still blocked by pawns whereas you've cleverly opened an offensive way to your units while blocking mines. Well done.

8. Nc3 e6
9...

If I guess well, you'll surely go on with your bishop trying to "flirt" my queen right? http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif

I will suffer will I? Perhaps my pawns will become overfed! http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif [manic laughter]

There are defensive systems for black which deliberately lead to positions like this. Alekhin's defence springs to mind. Their are ways to play both sides of such positions. Anyway, thank you for the compliment.

And no, my bishop is not going to flirt with your queen. Instead, my other bishop is going to attack your king!

I know I'm diabolic. But that's only the way I play chess. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif

Actually it very much depends who I am playing against. I usually play the person and not the board. My style is different when I'm playing stronger players, weaker players or players roughly the same as me.

I will now capture the knight on the edge since it will give you three separate islands of isolated pawns.

Uh that was not exactly what I meant.
I didn't played what you supposed. I said I would put my knight to cover my king rather than my queen. I wanted to put my Knight hence Knight->d7... Sorry. But anyway, ok, that's my fault. Let's assume that I put my queen so. But in this case, could it be possible to have rather 17. QxQ N*Q as you said please?
So it'd rather look like that:

How did I see all that? Well it's mostly experience, knowing that certainly configurations of pieces are usually unstoppable. I knew I ought to have a win once I had both rooks on the 6th rank, especially as you didn't have many defenders, and especially as I could get my knight and bishop into the attack easily too. Then it was just a case of working it out and plugging the holes. It is easier with "correspondence chess" - which this is - than "over-the-board chess", because you can get a board and experiment with moving round the pieces until you find a way that works. First you have to know the win is there though, otherwise all the working out effort is wasted!

Thank you for the game! And now you have nothing to distract from that wedding...
