After GenghisK told me that you play chess here, I wondered how do you play it? You just write down what your move is...and then?

Hi Kira.

It's like "correspondence chess". Two people agree to play each other and they create a new topic. One person writes down their first move and posts it to topic. The second person looks at that move and posts a reply. And it goes on until there is a result.

People sometimes take a few days to reply! A whole game may take weeks. It's quite slow but it does mean that you can set up the position on a board and move the pieces around until you find the move you like.

Check out some of the topics here and play them on a board.

Sometimes you're not obliged to put the name of the unit, nor its starting position. It's especially true for pawns. If you type e6, everybody can be sure it's the pawn. Sometimes it's amibiguous so you must clearly state which one you are moving. But you'll see that when you play. Or just look at the other games. I'm not good enough myself to give you lessons...
Anyway.

Anyway: there is a thread explaining all the details. I invite you to read it. But I'll also sum up here if you like.

You put first the name of the unit you move (K for king, N for kNight, B for Bishop, etc.) then just its destination.
Of course somtimes it can be amibiguous. Example: you have 2 Rooks on a same line a. Then you also have to specify Ra-a3, or Rh-a3. When you speak about bishops, it's impossible to get confused so you can just put Bc5 for instance.
When you check you put a "+" after, eg Qe4+.
When you take an enemy, you put an x. => Qxd4

But anyway, if you feel unease with that, just look at the game Shadowdal vs me. You'll see a more classical coding, ie start->arrival. Hope that helps you.

1. d3 is called the Mieses opening, but it's usually just a "transpositional" move to several different "reversed" openings. (Reversed openings are just like normal ones but with the colours reversed and White having an extra move. Not like this one!) Jacques Mieses was born in 1865 and had the longest career of any master player: 1888 - 1948!

Hey Kira! GK is a long way ahead of you at the moment - he has an extra knight and three extra pawns. Since a knight is worth three pawns too, GK is winning by about six pawns!

So here are two bits of advice.

Firstly, one of his pawns is a "passed" pawn - it can't be stopped by any other pawn from queening. It's his c-pawn: watch it! (You haven't got a passed pawn at the moment.)

Secondly, just think where you would be if you exchanged both rooks and your pawns with his rooks and pawns. He would have a knight, three pawns and a king, and you would have just your king. He would win! So don't exchange any of your pieces unless you have to. Keep your pieces and you'll keep your chances of winning.

However to answer your question directly, you (usually) specify the type of the piece you want to move and the place it's moving to. So "Re3" means move a Rook to square e3. Sometimes it needs to be more complex than that, but only to avoid ambiguity. The "+" sign means that that move places the opposing king in check.

When you ask about playing with a board in front of us, the answer is yes. Most of us keep the game's position in some form (like a portable chess set) and perhaps even transfer the game to a large board where we can experiement by moving stuff around before posting the move to the forum.

<u>Everyone else:</u> It would be really nice to see GenghisK and Kira play this game through. However, if the game goes as Smash suggests (35 Re3 Rxe3 36 Kxe3) I would be interested in GK actually posting details of what strategy he is going to use to win. Because if he picks the right strategy, Kira won't be able to stop him winning even if he tells her beforehand what he is going to do.

It's clear, Kira askes GK to sacrifice his rook. And Gk likes such things, so.....But there's no threat for GK, he'll just beat her, but he better do it quick, 'cause this is getting boring.

Sorry everyone for the delay, I was busy preparing my graduation. Now it's done. Now she can't/shoudn't move her king over the d column to hunt for my c pawn. Otherwise her f pawn is condemned and soon shall be the 2 others.
If she moves her a pawn a3 or a4, my rook will deal with it too.
So the wisest for her would be to move her king e2 of f2. Then I will move my rook Rd4 and then whatever she does, I'll advance my f pawn f4. From there, her king is condemned since she won't be able to move her king e3 anymore to threaten my rook once I have advanced my c pawn to queening. Once I've queened, the sentence will fall soon. Even though I can change my pawn for a rook instead of a queen, that won't change much. Stormerne, I think I answered your question.

Now Kira, do you still want a proof and go on or have I convinced you?
