View Full Version : Building Graphics: Timber Palisade
Drift May 01, 2003, 08:21 AM Timber Palisade
A flavor improvement to replace walls with. I hit the need for this improvement when none of the existing walls looked the part for my new mod. I did this from the scratch and am pretty happy with the result.

By Kal-el's request:Updated large pediaicon with very small change in shadowing (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads4/timberpalisadelarge.zip)
Drift May 01, 2003, 08:22 AM A preview (updated version):
Ville May 01, 2003, 08:36 AM That looks cool:goodjob:
Bobisback May 01, 2003, 08:48 AM You could use this as a early wall, then the civ3 wall as a later wall/medieval wall.
btw awsome job:goodjob:
Yoda Power May 01, 2003, 09:36 AM Very nice:goodjob:
Ukas May 01, 2003, 01:21 PM Drift, I think that earlier talk about "no graphic skills" was just not true - Lier! :D :goodjob:
Drift May 01, 2003, 03:34 PM Thanks guys. And Ukas, I swear I didn't lie. :D It could be that I'm starting to get the hang of this (or it's just that this was really easy one to draw - everything in straight lines)
Early wall is definitely one of its better uses. Best implementation would be that both walls would be subject to 'replaces all improvements with this flag checked' so that only one defensive structure could exist at a time, but that is usually taken by power plants.
Anyway, I'm not sure if I'm going to use it as an early wall. Could be just a graphic upgrade for walls.
Ukas May 01, 2003, 04:06 PM After Tomainia I've been thinking about doing this wild west scenario scientificly based on those books I read as a kid, Morgan Kane, Finn West, Nahkasukka... :D This palisade will be needed then.
SKILORD May 01, 2003, 10:19 PM pretty nifty.
Kal-el May 02, 2003, 12:48 AM looks good, but there should be a shadow cast by the gate as well.

I had some trouble figuring out how the shadow should fall from the gate and the little dark blob near the tip of the gate is what I came up. Sun is shining nearly from zenith and shadows are very small. I tidied it up a little but the change is very minimal. But since you asked, I'll put a new version of the large pediaicon up. Feel free to comment if you have any suggestions on shadowing. :)
aaglo May 02, 2003, 02:12 AM The gate must be pretty heavy, I hope you have a couple of extra trolls to work with it... ;)
This looks like colonization... :)
Kal-el May 02, 2003, 09:48 AM Drift,
According to the shadow on cast by the wall itself, the sun seems to be coming from the north, but the shadow cast by the gate has the sun coming from the West. Shadows are definitely tricky and I am by no means an expert when trying to draw them myself, but I can tell you that it looks like that gate is on a planet with two suns. :)

Actually, sun is coming slightly from northwest. A thin shadow at the end of the gate's point looked ridiculous so I shadowed it with sun in northwest. It's not in sync with the other shadows but I don't really notice it.
Anyway, I'm not going to touch it any more. It's afterall just a pediaicon that isn't usually under a close scrutiny. Actually, it's the build icons and small pediaicon that should be the priority since they are the ones that the player usually sees.
Kal-el May 02, 2003, 10:55 AM no problem, it does look good. :)
