You say "Mid 1600s or higher". How much higher? And is your 1600 USCF or ELO?

I haven't played publicly for over 10 years, so I don't have a current rating. When I was at my best in the 80s, my rating was about BCF 150 = 1800 ELO = 1900 USCF.

Let me know if that's too high for you. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif

I have only one rating, it's USCF and it is 1592, but I would love to play you stormerne.

For your information, ELO = USCF - 100, and BCF = (ELO - 600)/8.
Thus your 1592 USCF is 1492 ELO or 112 BCF.

Enough of that. I am pleased to play you.

Good! I used to play the Sicilian most of the time when I played for town and county.

NeelaX plays too? Is she rated? And what have your studies told you about this variation then?

Well I started out with Friz 4 and DL'ed all of Bobby Fisher's Games...I studied them heavely. And Neela and I really play the hell out of it.

I know most of the opening varrations, and I have a strong middle game with it.
My 1592 is a result of my end game ;(

My favorite variation is..you guessed it...the same as BF's..the Najdorf...
I am most experienced with this varriation

1 e4 c5
2 Nf3 d6
3 d4 cxd4
4 Nxd4 Nf6
5 Nc3 a6
6 Bg5 e6

Our varriation...commonly know as the 0'Kelly Variation thus far... Is not even in my MCO-13, the only reason I even know about it is because of Chess-Life
It should be a interesting game from here.

I also bought IM Jeremy Silman's new book "The Amateur's Mind - Turning chess misconceptions into chess Mastery"
I've worked my way through the first 3 chapters twice now, and it has raised my level of play substantially, I would say around 125 points USCF.
I haven't gotten to another tourney lately though, although Neela is so much looking forward to going to her first.

I would personally rate her around 1250 - but she has grown by leaps and bounds since finished the old tactics book I had bought in high school.

PS, I told Neela I was speaking of her and that she should post here, I think she may play a game, so watch her, I will be too, I hope she does well. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif

Yes this is the O'Kelly variation. Not in your book of openings? Not surprising: it was never very fashionable. But this was the ideal reason for my playing it so often in matches, because people would have to think on their feet - they wouldn't have seen it in books.

The point of the variation is that if White plays "normally", Black gets a good game. To stand any chance of winning, White has to play "abnormally".

In the 80s, the best abnormal move was 3.c4 though this lacked a bit of dynamism. I once played this variation against International Grandmaster James Plaskett and he responded 3.c4. Because I'd found the "correct" response (3...Nc6) led to a rather rigid positions for Black, I had formed my own strategy based on 3...e6, and played this against him. It surprised him, and he spent longer on his 4th move than on any other in the whole game! Apparently it was a new concept. I have the slight pleasure of knowing that this transposition from the O'Kelly to the Kan variation became a standard.

Your choice of 3.c3 is another good "abnormal" move. There are several replies I could make, including a rather fashionable one by Basman. But I'll just stick to what worked well for me in the past.

Tournaments are certainly good for giving your play a boost. I remember in the 70s I used to play my boss every lunchtime at work and scored about 50% against him. One weekend I went to a tournament and thereafter I beat him ever time!

It was also good playing league games for a club. Too bad you don't have a working one locally.

I stopped playing - and therefore I stopped improving - when I stopped enjoying it. I used to play for a county 'A' team. We'd spend Saturday travelling half way across the country, spend 4 hours in intense concentration at 20 boards, then travel all the way back. After which I'd spent all day and maybe only drawn. I lost motivation!

Chess can get boring if you let it, but that goes for just about anything. I find that playing face to face with someone very interesting -- I enjoy the meditation of the game -- and oft I can “feed” from the energy of my opponent so to speak – LOL, I love to get into that “Zone” of play.

Well chess was never got boring for me. But this was midway through my previous marriage and any correspondence of goals between me and my then-wife had long vanished. The stress of playing chess matches just wasn't worth it, and once you reach a certain level you're "expected" to play competitively at that level.

That was all a long time ago. My marriage to Arlea is quite different and we have written our mutual support into our wedding vows. (http://www.anglo-saxon.demon.co.uk/wedding/vows.html)

That's right Smash! When I first learnt this, it was still called the Tartakover-O'Kelly variation. I think it's a pity that his contribution is largely forgotten nowadays. I think it may have still been called that up to MCO 10, perhaps even 11.

Johan, I've never read Chess-Life. I'd be interested to hear what it said about all this. Is it worth my trying to order a back-issue, and if so which issue number was it in?

stormerne the issue I had of Chess Life that mentioned The O'Kelly Variation was dated back in 1992, of that I am sure. Unfortunately all of the issues I had back then have been destroyed. ;(

The involvements of such a wonderful game take me elsewhere, and this is when I loose.
A death perhaps, but I would say it’s more of a lose of concentration? How could U not?
Do you know what the word Nemesis means?

Yes I know of Nemesis (with a capital N): apparently a goddess of the Greek pantheon, though one I've never met. Allegedly she is a goddess of vengeance and retribution though, like all other deities, she probably does a whole load of other things too (and other deities probably fare well in the vengeance and retribution department too!).

Anyway... to the game. You must put your concentration were it belongs. It is rare that a chess game should take priority in one's life, and you have many other things to preoccupy you at the moment.

I have hesitated over this move for a day. There are two choices for me, and they are not quite equivalent. I'd like to play one, but my intuition warns me to play the other. So, as ever, I will follow my intuition.

Which page on Runes did you see: this one (http://www.anglo-saxon.demon.co.uk/Skvala/runeprim.html) or this one (http://www.anglo-saxon.demon.co.uk/Skvala/healing.html) ?

I've been studying runes for over 20 years so it would be a long story. In summary, I first became interested in runes because from 1973 onwards I've studied divination, starting with the I Ching. However some time after I came across them, I realised that runes were not just a tool for divination as most modern people think. I researched their historical uses from primary sources and studied the culture, values and religion of their originators. Later I did my own practical research and found that they were also "keys" that could be used to unlock vast energies. I also realised that, though there are very many modern books on runes, nearly all of them should be thrown away! So I wrote an introductory booklet and later set up an online rune study group.

First of all "Hello audience!" Great to see you guys taking an interest. I for one am flattered by your attention. And thanks for your encouragement VC. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif If you take a look forward a few moves in this game, you'll see it still has lots of complicated possibilities. So my best guess so far is that it'll be a long game, even before anyone has a marked advantage. You may be waiting a few weeks to collect your prize! And I've included a game position after my move below...

Your move surprises me. If (from the above diagram) you had played what I believe was your strongest move 29. Nc4, I would have replied 29...Nd7!? which leads to a fascinating unbalanced endgame of my 2 Rooks + Knight + 5 pawns against your Rook + 2 Knights + Bishop + 4 pawns.

I had prepared all that after you played your 25th move. But now it is lost forever and will live on only in this note. Paradoxically, far from resting or recuperating, I was about to spice things up, and it is <u>your</u> move that relaxes the pressure for me!

To our audience: Hey guys, give Green a break! I tell you, he's still playing really well. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/goodwork.gif Don't underestimate him: I'm certainly not doing. For example, my 23rd move was a really good one and perhaps worthy of a '!' after it, but his reply was also good and also worthy of a '!'. So I reckon things are still finely balanced and it's certainly too early to tell the result of this game, especially as we're both still trying to win rather than draw. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif

My apologies, I have been ill for a few days and had totally lost any continuity! So I have evaluated from scratch again and found there are many candidate moves available at the first three levels of play, many of which - though beguiling - lead eventually to nought. Thus I judge that my veteran knight must move again...

Your correct about the ale. The downside to industrialization is there's no love in the making of objects and machines. You can never receive more than u put into something. - But when one doesn't build or make things but instead delegates the task to a lifeless mechanism there is a plain difference. I.e. it could be from dinner to bottled beer, and I say this with hesitation, because I don't feel either way to be wrong, just different. In my judgment my own way seems to work more efficiently, most likely because it is what I’m accustomed too - thus I choose to make my own ale, among many other things.

No. I do not accept your suggested continuation. That very plausible move - and who would not have automatically played it? - leads to ruin for Black in just one line, and I must assume that you would have played that line. So I will not send my knight riding into the centre. Instead my king steps towards the fray.

We too choose to make our own ale, partly because traditional British beer is too hoppy for our liking and has too little body. Perhaps we would not bother doing so if we lived in Bavaria! And we also make all our own soap, simply because we can make far better quality than we can buy, and yet it is still cheaper.

But tell me... are you a knave, prince or king of brewing? In other words, do you brew from kits, extracts or grains?

It's looked hairy for more than 20 moves Smash, but it's still holding quite nicely. It's what I get for being deliberately provocative and underestimating an opponent. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif

I think this is the chess game with the highest watcher count in the history of the CFCFC. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif" border=0>

How can you do that? <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> You don't have a pawn which can capture on g5 anymore! Your h-pawn is still on h3. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[LOL]" />

Due to recent traumatic changes of personal circumstance and the fact that now it seems to take a week or more to make a move, I have lost all continuity in this game, and with it has gone my motivation and enthusiasm. So if I seem lacking in "spark" or coherent strategy, you need look no further for an explanation.
