Here is an animation that would be difficult to portray as a single figure unit....

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads4/preview_MF_Escorted_Bomber.gif

This would be an ideal 'unique unit' for the Americans.
During WW2, only the British and Americans had heavy strategic bombers....and the British Lancaster usually flew singly, at night, while the American B-17 flew in tight 'box' formations, escorted by Mustangs when they became available.
(The Mustang fighter was created by hot rod, and has been slightly altered and adapted for multi-figure use)

Suggested Stats
----------------
The same as a normal Civ3 bomber, but with a defence slightly larger than the attack factor of a Civ3 Fighter.
This reflects the problems enemy fighters had: not only must they dogfight the escorts, but the bomber's own machine guns as well.
Additionaly, I suggest that this unit does not replace the standard bomber, but is instead a later upgrade.

There is also a 2 figure version (with one bomber & one fighter) in the Completed Units Forum.

Well I had to post ONE of them first!

(You are like an ex-girlfriend of mine....
....after receiving two ties as a Christmas present, I wore one, only to have her say "so, you didn't like the other one then". :crazyeye: )

This was an awesome idea for a M Unit and I think the details are good on it. One question, wouldn't it have a somewhat shorter range of movement due to the escort's lack of fuel capacity? Good unit though. Someone should do a Lancaster unit...

Thanks Junkyard_Pope. :)

Here are some aircraft facts:-
B17 Flying Fortress (with a 6,000lb bomb load) = range 2,000 miles.
P-51 Mustang (with external 'drop-tanks') = range 2,080 miles.
Soooo.....Mustangs could escort the bombers all the way to Berlin and back from England.

As for Lancasters, as I said in the first post, they usually flew at night (and it is very dangerous trying to fly in a tight formation in darkness ;) ).
Still....when I get more time....I'll try to make an MF Lancaster unit.
(It won't be for several months however....I'm just too busy at the moment)

Yes but the P-51 was only able to do that from the beginning of 1944. Before that it was a nice but distinctly average, underpowered aircraft that had failed to impress the US airforce or government.

The the RAF then decided to place the Merlin engine in them and a legend was born ..... then the US got interested.

Spooky,

Considering they designed the airframe and controls in 120 days in 1940, the Allies got lucky:

Makes for some interesting reading.
