View Full Version : Which search engine do you use?
WillJ May 11, 2003, 09:32 PM I was wondering what search engine all of you use. Do you have a favorite that you highly recommend to others? Do you like certain features with certain engines?
I always use Google, and it is PC Magazine's Editor's Choice. I especially like its image search feature.
funxus May 12, 2003, 02:09 AM Google, definitely:)
Pillager May 12, 2003, 07:44 AM Yup, 99% of the time Google.
Mariusz May 12, 2003, 07:46 AM Of course Google.
I didn't even know that there are so many of them.
col May 12, 2003, 09:03 AM Google mainly - but Alltheweb still throws up pages that google doesnt. i used to use Hotbot a lot too.
Wolfe Tone May 12, 2003, 03:54 PM Google because it is convinently built into Opera.
Mikoyan May 12, 2003, 03:55 PM Google. I used to search with go2net before, but google is so much better.
hbdragon88 May 12, 2003, 08:24 PM I use Google the most often.
I tried using alltheweb and it did give me better results, but didn't check the spelling in my search. So it's back to Google.
WillJ May 12, 2003, 10:09 PM Well, Google's the most popular, as I expected, but I didn't know it was going to be such a landslide... I was sure that there might be at least a few Yahoo, AlltheWeb, and AOL users...
hbdragon88 May 12, 2003, 11:31 PM Well, used most often. All of us might have used Alltheweb, or Yahoo, or AOL once in a while, but never all the time...

I love that feature, just write 'g ' and what you want to search for...

Well, the poll is in a way it has to give these results. Maybe a multiple-choice one might have been better. :mischief:
Usually Google, more than sometimes Yahoo, escpecially because I want directory hits first there and rarely a German one.
I started with Webcrawler, then Excite, Lycos and Yahoo. After Yahoo did not feature the "Search More: Google Excite ..." links at the end of the page, I completely turned to Google. :yeah:
Oh, and of course I pretty often use the search engines on Astalavista. :mischief:
:D
Knight-Dragon May 14, 2003, 01:05 PM Google nowadays, after hearing all you CFC'ers raving about it... :)
Turner May 14, 2003, 01:27 PM There. . . did it. Voted for Yahoo. I use the Yahoo Companion, and it has the search thingy right there on top of explorer. Sometimes I use google when using NC, but for the most part, yahoo. I think they go through google, as I get a bunch of the same results. . .
Souron May 14, 2003, 09:41 PM indead: yahoo is powerd by google. Sometimes I use Yahoo becouse the catigoreys look better and seem easyer to navigate. ofcource I never tried navigating catigories in google.
WillJ May 14, 2003, 10:27 PM Yahoo is not powered by Google anymore, IIRC. I think it was powered by Overture a while ago, then Inktomi. I'm not exactly sure, though...Originally posted by Lucky

JonathanValjean May 15, 2003, 12:13 AM Google. You mean there are other search engines? :)
Jamesds May 17, 2003, 12:30 PM I like Google, they have special search-bars, and a googe-labs page with some real cool things, maybe all you google users should check it out!
I don't know the URL, but type Google Labs into the google search engine and it'll appear in the list.
JJP May 23, 2003, 06:08 AM Google. :D
bladester May 26, 2003, 08:27 AM I have never failed to find anything I wanted/needed through Google.
Fundamentalist May 27, 2003, 06:50 PM I use google
MarkVanDamme May 31, 2003, 01:46 PM My Opera uses Alltheweb as it's search engine on the dropdown box thing.
Solver Jun 01, 2003, 11:54 AM Google wasn't around forever, while I've used Yahoo for many years. However, Yahoo really IS powered by Google, and they produce the same search results.
Still... I use Yahoo more, because it's a habit. You know, I've been typing that address whenever I need to find something for the last 7 years, so...
Silverblade Jun 02, 2003, 03:56 AM I use Google mostley because it's built in with the browsers Phoenix and Opera.
HAND Jun 03, 2003, 01:34 PM www.metacrawler.com Its relatively unheard of, but i like it.
Zwelgje Jun 03, 2003, 01:41 PM I started with altavista when I first went online and also Yahoo. Then I used Lycos quite often. Since 4 or 5 years it's only Google for me though...
gerryandersson Jun 08, 2003, 10:56 AM I go to spray.se, I think they use lycos
covok48 Jun 12, 2003, 02:51 AM Years ago, Google was recommended by the Wall Street Journal. I've been hooked ever since. It's even my homepage. How sad. ;-)
Lord Valentine Jun 15, 2003, 08:18 PM Currently Google is definitely my favorite search engine. Some years ago (in the pre-Google era) I used to use AskJeeves a lot, but then they decided to change the way it works. Can't remember exactly what it was but it was in the same period as Google was starting so I gave that a try and was convinced immediately:D
Gainy Jun 17, 2003, 02:07 AM I started with altavista when I first went online
Likewise, but i turned to google when i got more "comfortable" with the internet. It's also alot easier to type in the address bar than any other search engine (thats the reason i use it) :)
Inter4 Jun 20, 2003, 01:44 PM GOOGLE!!! :D
Suppersalmon Jun 20, 2003, 02:00 PM Google is my fave
cavemanf16 Jun 24, 2003, 04:25 PM Haha! Looks like Google is kicking the crap out of everything else. Nothing like finding a post you're looking for on Civfanatics than by Googling for it! ;)
John Bull Jun 24, 2003, 06:08 PM google
it even compensates for spelling mistakes like http://www.gooogle.com
Matrix Jun 24, 2003, 06:16 PM www.ixquick.com (http://www.ixquick.com) http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/yeah.gif I'm most happy with their results. They catagorize the results; very handy!
WildFire Jun 24, 2003, 08:13 PM Google of course.
You forgot excite search. www.excite.com

Nope, still powered by Google. I use Yahoo for regular searches, but Google for that nice image thingy.
gonzo_for_civ Jun 25, 2003, 02:45 AM Yahoo, that way i can get my news w/out having to click more. Call it habit if you like.

I have never failed to find anything I wanted/needed through Google.
Well, I have so failed. Rare but it happens...
When that happens, I go to The MetaMonk (http://www.metamonk.de)
It's not a search engine in itself, but it lets you use many search engines with the same search pattern. It's also multilingual.
Dead handy (if a pain to cut and paste from - maybe I should work out how to do this more easily).
