View Full Version : New Unit: He-111 Bomber
aaglo May 13, 2003, 12:10 AM Here's the new German flavor Bomber. The complete name is He-111 P (since there was some disbelief - earlier versions didn't have a 'glass nose').

Here's an ingame pic of the unit:

Smoking mirror May 13, 2003, 01:42 PM Exelent work, And so quick too. :)
The he111 was the germans main heavy bomber replacing the do17 at the start of the war.
The HE 111 was an exelent propaganda weapon, produced in such vast numbers and used to such horrific effect in the spanish civil, that it caused the french and british to greatly fear the german war machine. This fear was used to extract huge political gains by the nazi party, and is the root of much of thier early success.
In the event however the HE111 was not as good as its political reputation seemed to indicate. Although the bomber could outrun and outfight most early fighters, the next generation of fighter planes such as the british spitfire found unescorted HE111s easy prey. Also there was the problem of its short operational range because of only having two engines to suport its bulk.
Originaly british & french estimates of casualties that could be caused by the HE111 were so great that war with germany seemed too high a price to pay. However many of the bombs dropped in poland (and for the rest of the war) failed to explode, meaning much lower casualty rates than estimated. These facts eventualy helped the allies to steel thier hearts for the enevitable war with germany.
Towards the end of the battle of britain with improvements in radio technology and navigation the HE111 was switched to night bombing with better results, though its inherent problems and the disasterous german decision to attack london rather than concentrating on eliminating the british air force resulted in defeat for the HE 111 and the luftwaffe in general.
Kal-el May 13, 2003, 01:44 PM Thanks for the history lesson, SM. That sort of background info is always appreciated. :D

Actually, when I started working on this, I didn't know that there already was a He-111 made.
The one you did looks like a modification of the vanilla bomber. IMHO modding the existing units is far more work-consuming than making units from scratch. ;)
And your He-111 is an earlier version, propably He-111 C :p

Well, I can say that I like both (and just dowloaded yours)- I will put it in the game somehow with slightly different stats than the other Heinkel Bomber. This way there will be more variety (and choices) for the German high command... one could be either an earlie version of the other or they could be available as a conventional bomber and another naval plane with greater reach (etc) at the same time. :goodjob: great work there!!!
Boulboulgadol May 14, 2003, 05:42 PM That's a beautyfull unit !!
It will join my flavor basket right now !
Shady May 14, 2003, 09:30 PM really cool! still would like that ar 234 just for availability's sake
Lynx-Eyed May 18, 2003, 12:16 PM yeah, aaglo, give me more!!!
aaglo May 23, 2003, 12:20 AM I just noticed, that He-111Large.pcx has wrong background colour index (255) which makes it transparent, and thus MAGENTA in the civilopedia. Here are the new ones ;)
The same problem is also atleast in the B-29, Bristol Beaufighter, Me-110's and Turtleship. And propably in the Gloster gladiator too... :(
Here's the new pcx-file ;)
