There's been some good units made to replace the explorer, but I haven't seen any for the ancient age Scout.

I'd really love to see some made for European and Middle Eastern civs. Not sure what they'd look like, or what they'd be based on. Somebody who knows more about history can figure it out ;)

Yeah, someone "plain", who doesn't look like a typical american. Maybe a version of the ordinary Warrior would work?

for european, maybe it could be a scrawny version of the european spearman (without the spear of course). not sure about the middle east though.

The middle east could have a guy on a camal.

I'll get behind this request as well. :D

i really need this unit, and i'm sure flavor unit fans really want to get away from the native american scout for european civs.

CAN SOMEBODY PLEEEEEEEEASE MAKE A EUROPEAN SCOUT? Maybe this peasant would work...

Hey! My mom told me she wouldn't let anyone see that picture! :D

Seriously, we do need this scout.

Hi Sween --

How about Jimmyh's Priest?

-- Or, more colorfully, Kinboat's Troubador (over at GI Dustin's site).

that could work as a flavor unit for the celts of the scout called "druid", but i really can't see it working for others. besides, the celts aren't expansionist. thanks for pointing that out though, ozy! :D

for a European scout I would think someone like Strider/Aragorn would work well. Though I don't know how Ancient that would be. But I guess the ancient age can cover a pretty huge expanse of time.

actually maybe something like the archer would make a good Ancient Euro Scout.

that peasant wont work, its to medieval....

sween32
Jul 16, 2003, 06:48 PM
i don't care if it's not really ancient. the iro's mounted warrior wasn't ancient, was it?

Xen
Jul 16, 2003, 07:35 PM
yes and no, technologiclly, it was an ancient development, but the Iroquises did not have access to horses until after european intervention in the new world

Mithadan
Jul 17, 2003, 05:24 AM
I didn't even realise the Iroquois gallopped around on horses with eagle-feather headresses at all. I thought they shaved their heads in "mohawk" style, and whacked people which big wonking ironwood clubs with claws sticking out of them, whilst walking around in the forest. :D

mrtn
Jul 17, 2003, 05:58 AM
Mithadan, that's not Iroqouis, that's punks. You always mix those two up. ;)

thestonesfan
Jul 17, 2003, 09:31 AM
The Iroquois were actually primarily European in dress and fighting tactics, at least during the years of the Iroquois Confederacy. The plains Indians are the feather-headress, master horseman, scalping ones.

The European scout should look like Asterix the Gaul from the French comics. A somewhat shorter than normal unit with a weird little horned hat and barbaric hair whose run animation looks slightly faster than the others, while his fidget is putting his hand over his eyes to shield from the sun.

The middle-eastern scout should be a guy with a fez running around in bedouin clothes.

I've got one person who agrees with me... so it's agreed then!

Make him a less-comical slightly more historical looking Asterix.

Notice the winged helmet representing speed, light clothing, and water canteen. Perfect for a European scout.

sween32
Jul 19, 2003, 04:46 PM
how about just a little guy in a tunic?

mrtn
Jul 19, 2003, 04:54 PM
That wouldn't work as a european, it's too generic. ;)

Edit: I'll just add a few more ;););), to be on the safe side.

lol, I guess I missed that, or forgot about it. But I have to say appealing to the DyP lover in all of us is definitley a good way to try and get a unit created.

You should also suggest this in Dom Pedro's Flavor unit project thread.

Sween, I will try and put together a concept sketch for this guy. I would like to see this unit made. In fact I would like to see a version made for the Asian and the Middle Eastern Civs as well.

Arne had a mediterranean traveler in his SCN Rome preview thread.

kal-el,

just don't make him as strong as that Inquisitor of yours. That guy was cool, don't get me wrong, but this guy should be slimmer and stealthy like. I like the idea of having him look sort of like a LoTR ranger.

Sween, are you thinking something even earlier than that?

Nder
Jul 22, 2003, 03:03 PM
that Traveler is the Alexander the Great king unit.

sween32
Jul 22, 2003, 03:37 PM
you can't make it look too much like the european swordsman or spearman. it has to be visually unique. that's why i think a little guy in a tunic would work well.

sobe, at this point i don't care when it's from. hell, i'm using robin hood as an ancient archer for england.

sobe_1_knob

What's wrong with Robin Hood as an ancient archer for England?

Sween,

What do you think of something like this for the Euro Scout?
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads4/Euro_Scout.gif

This would be the fidget, he stoops down to look at a broken twig. "Hmmm, they are three of four days hard ride ahead of us.":
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads4/Euro_Scout2.gif

I will put together something for the Asian, Mediterranean , and Middle Eastern civs as well.

Nder
Jul 23, 2003, 02:29 PM
very nice, he fits in well with the current Warrior and Swordsman. Sort of a combination of both.

mrtn
Jul 23, 2003, 02:49 PM
He'll freeze his biceps though.
Looks cool.

Nder
Jul 23, 2003, 02:59 PM
but just think how cold the warrior must get. :)

sween32
Jul 24, 2003, 01:20 AM
looks great, kal-el! :D maybe the sword should be dropped to make it less like a military unit and just a guy who runs fast and hides behind bushes. other then the sword; excelent!

mrtn
Jul 24, 2003, 07:08 AM
You call that a knife? This is a knife!
I got an idea from Arne and LBPB to use the king units from PTW as scouts. It's not possible in regicide games, of course, but e g the Brennus unit would be a good scout.

Its really more of a dagger than a sword. I mean, you can't expect to send a scout out into the wilderness without something to protect himself from killer rabbits.

anyway, here is the mediterranean scout.

It's nice Kal-El, but comeon, why are they all so muscular? They should be like the standard scout as far as build goes. Fast and skinny.

Sorry, Dom, I have misquoted you. I certainly didn't mean to scare a brother like that. Oh well, it doesn't really matter since it was I who was making the unit anyway!

Yes, that's right, Sween finally has a European Scout! I made it from Kal-el's concept picture. Check out the DyP unit pack #2 in the completed units' forum.
