View Full Version : Petition to start #20 early
ltcoljt May 29, 2003, 11:43 PM I am sure that Cracker has GOTM #20 all ready to go. Since we have a weekend at hand why not release it early so those of us who have to work during the week can make use of this weekend. It's a diety game and that means a long pull for some of us to finish.
Additionally, summer is coming and with all the wet weather many of us are having we will all want to get outdoors when things clear up. So perhaps Cracker could bend the rules a tad and give us a little present?
cracker May 29, 2003, 11:51 PM Your present is my continued rosey disposition and some beautiful weather to enjoy out of doors this weekend without worrying about the tribulations of Civ3.
Have fun. Enjoy the weekend.
in the words of that immortal West Point Glee Club song:
"June ... Will ... Come ... Soon ..."
(and yes that song was written 50 or 60 years before Leave it the Beaver ever made its TV debut. ;) )
Creepster May 30, 2003, 07:25 AM ltcoljt, just to add another note to Crakers comments. Releasing the games early can be a pain on the submission end. With the way it is set up now and the minimal overlap there are still a few games that get confused between this month and last month. Releasing the game early would only cause some of the GOTM 20 games to get mixed in with the submissions from GOTM 19. It is best if we can minimize that at all costs. There are a few players who like to see how early they can submit their game every month. I have seen submissions within a few hours of the new game being available.
Moonsinger May 30, 2003, 04:46 PM Hi ltcoljt,
I think I have found a way for you to start early on your GOTM20 or GOTM21 or any GOTM from this point forward.:D Just join the Cracker's team (to become a staff member) and you get to start early.:) Good luck!:)
ltcoljt May 30, 2003, 05:58 PM No thanks. I will just run a few more practice starts. I need the practice. Tried one earlier today and was swamped by the Germans. Bismarck told me to go back to Chieftain.
Total game time elasped 44 minutes (and I spent some of that in the bathroom). It may be a longer month than I thought. :(

1) You're not the only one who needs the practice on deity level.
2) Me, too! I fired up a practice round, and made it to 1060AD, giving me a whopping 5 1/2 hours worth of playtime. Guess who conquered me...the Germans! The scary part is that it was only against 7 civs, instead of the 10 that Cracker has in store for us. This means even less time and space to expand. Oh, no!
3) Do you mean shorter month than you thought? For me, it will more than likely be a short month indeed. In the GOTM19, I played for 55 hours on emperor, and was successful; I was hoping I would finally be ready to tackle deity level and at least hang in there. Unless I learn something spectacular in my next couple practice rounds (and from my quest for deity tips), GOTM20 might just be a forgettable experience.
Dislak May 31, 2003, 12:09 AM first of all, i don't really know if this post belongs here or if it's out of topic. I just have a few quick questions that I don't know where else to ask.
1. What time on Sunday does the game come out to download? Midnight on Sunday or sometime in the day?
2. I'm at home right now and will be on the day of GOTM20's release. Since i'll probably play it here and then want to play it when I go back to college on sunday night, is it possible to upload my saved game at that point to a post and then download it back in my dorm room and continue to play?
Thanks for all your help guys!
Bamspeedy May 31, 2003, 01:48 AM 1. Usually around midnight, but sometimes it's released a few hours earlier.
2. Not a good idea to post it (finding a proper place to post it without being a spoiler, for one thing).
Couldn't you e-mail the save to yourself?

Email it to yourself as Bamspeedy suggested, or you can just upload it here using the Upload file link at the bottom of the page without making it a spoiler post.
There's an option in the upload page to view the listing of the uploads directory so you can click to download it again, or you can type its url directly. It will be at http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads4/your_file_name.

I suppose you have the proper licences for both machines ;)
you may use an USB stick to transfer your game (and all sorts of data); very useful
you may keep your game on an external firewire (or USB 2.0) drive

Karasu May 31, 2003, 06:13 AM If it's just a single save file, you can even save it on an obsolete floppy disk... :crazyeye:
Dislak May 31, 2003, 08:46 AM once again, I ask and I find out information. I'm loving this :)
I sorta forgot about e-mailing it to myself. Guess that'll be the easiest way  Thank you guys for helping me out!
tao May 31, 2003, 12:01 PM I sorta forgot about e-mailing it to myself. Guess that'll be the easiest way  IMHO the easiest way to do it via email is with Eudora Shared Folders (ESF). You create an ESF group by specifying email addresses and every participant specifies his/her ESF folder after getting the invitation mail. Afterwards you just put things in and out of your ESF folders and Eudora handles the synchronizations via email with everybody. If they use Eudora also ... ;)
Karasu May 31, 2003, 05:50 PM Look! I didn't know of this thing about Eudora.
It is almost criminally OT, but it will be extremely useful for me at work -thanks Tao!
Think about it, something learned in the Civ forum that can improve my efficiency at work... isn't life strange!
Moonsinger May 31, 2003, 06:03 PM You guys actually play game at work? How do you manage it?
