View Full Version : Naming the Provinces
Octavian X Jun 03, 2003, 11:47 PM This poll will run for the next 72 hours.
This is the list of provincial names:
Palatine, Aventine, Quirinal, Viminal, Esquiline and Caelian
If this measure passes, the first governors (elected or appointed) of the next six provinces must pick one of these names to name that province.
A simple majority of votes when the poll closes is required for passage.

Cpt Kaos Jun 04, 2003, 12:11 AM I voted yes. I like keeping the Roman flavor to the game. The creativity can come in naming the cities.:D
Almightyjosh Jun 04, 2003, 01:36 AM For those of you who don't know, our first province, Capitoline, is named after one of the seven hills surrounding Rome. These six names are the other six hills.
disorganizer Jun 04, 2003, 03:24 AM hmmm. werent the governors supposed to name their province? (at least in dg1+2 it was that way)
so how can they be forced to name them that way?
Shaitan Jun 04, 2003, 06:09 AM I voted no. I don't like the idea of forcing governors to pick from a list.
disorganizer Jun 04, 2003, 06:20 AM i also wonder: is there really a base in the rules for forcing them to comply to the list? as informational poll i voted yes, to give them an orientation of what the people would like... but i think this poll in itself may even violate our rules as it deletes the governor's right to freely choose their province name as they wish :-)
Shaitan Jun 04, 2003, 06:31 AM Not really, dis. The governors have no specific right to name a province. It's tradition.
disorganizer Jun 04, 2003, 08:10 AM Oh. I thought that was written down somewhere :-)
Cyc Jun 04, 2003, 08:18 AM Sorry, Shaitan, I voted YES. 1. Now that we have no laws stating the right of the first Governors to name their Provinces, what's to stop us from changing? I think we should have kept our laws. 2. I really don't think dredging up names from old Demogames is a sign of creativity, and definitely not originality. 3. This is a new game in a new world. We are Rome, so I like the idea of the Seven Hills. It's a great little package. 4. We can always return to the first Governors naming their Provinces in the next game, where hopefully we will return to an era of rules.
Shaitan Jun 04, 2003, 08:43 AM I'd prefer a name approval process to avoid unpopular names. Go ahead and suggest a naming scheme. Use this as a pre-approved name list. When a new province is formed the governor can pick a name from the pre-approved list or suggest a new one. Poll that name to make sure it's acceptable. That's the best of both worlds.
