View Full Version : Whos playing what in Gotm20?

Now that GOTM20 has started I thought it would be nice to have a common place where everyone can ooh and ahh over who's attempting the various levels.

Post whether you're playing Predator, Open or Conquest and then pat others on the back, give encouragement or prod the sandbaggers.:p

I'll be the first to post for conquest. I'll probably play open on the rest of the (non-diety) games, unless an interesting unit/challenge appears in one of the other classes, but my last couple of diety attempts never got out of the middle ages and I hoping to change that with these advantages.

PS: How do I attach the Conquest icon? (to bad it's not a smilie)

--------------------
Great - a double post - now I'll either have to say something creative or leave a duplicate message. I choose option A.

BTW denyd, Congrats on being the first Conquest player to post. Good luck on Deity!

HotRod@ WOW! Looking for an excuse for not making the top 10 QSC this month?;)

Moonsinger@ I would have been surprized by your decision to go Open but you explained in other thread that you would "always" be an open player. How the wheel add to your Trading Scenario?:groucho:

I'm playing the OPEN version. I really want to be able to play well on deity and thus I am avoiding the bonus helps the conquest players get. I think that I may end up having second thoughts about it.

Open. Love the icon thingie, by the way. :)

I've made it up to 1650-ish BC, and I'm loving it so far. :D Deity is truly a world above all the other levels.

@Hotrod: Wow, you're brave! How's the barbs treating you? (Don't tell me, I'll find out soon enough in the spoiler thread if I can get any time to play!)

Enjoy, everybody!

Since I play civ to help me unwind from my stressful and demanding job, I'm not looking to make the best possible move in every turn. I want a game where I'm allowed to make mistake and to be able to recover from it without thinking too much about it.

@ controlfreak--is it brave, or just plain masochistic??

I am beginning to question my own sanity--first solo deity game was a raging barb Epic 26, second will be raging barb predator GOTM 20, and third will be Epic 30--deity game with max turns for research set from 40 to 300. Add an all science opponent deity SG... :crazyeye:

Believe me, I do not consider myself in the same league as the top players, but the call was just too great...besides, a report of my downfall will be just as entertaining...and probably even funnier

 @Control and Renata: What a better way to get a first solo deity win !

I need to work on my warmongering skills why not play predator and force me to take a more agressive approach. Last few GOTM I have been very peaceful 15 - Space, 16 / 17 only QSC, 18 diplo and 19 Space.

Wish me luck!

HotRod@ I agree theres nothing :cool:er than first Diety on Predator. I'm praying for you.:) Really, if you're intent on conquest, Predator may not prove that much harder. You won't have the wheel but who would normally? The hyperbarbs will give the AI somebody besides you to pick on until you can get your army raise. Good luck and watch your step!:cooool:

@ Hotrod--well your warmaking skills have looked pretty good lately to this observer. Yes, like you, improved warmaking was the other reason I wanted to take on the challenge--after being humbled in my first AW attempt--I felt it time to brush up on laying the :hammer: down.

I'm playing the Conquest version because:

2) I sucked at Emperor last time I tried it.
3) I've never played Deity
4) I've never played as the Spanish.

And the best dairy cows can usually be found at the deity level too.;) Actually, the cows at the deity level are no different than the cows at any other levels. The only thing different here is that there will be less dairy farmers which means less competition in the dairy business. When there so few herds roaming the land, no matter how bad I lead them, they would usually come out alright in the end.:)

First Deity. First GOTM. First QSC - if I get that far. I admit it, I'm timid.

So far I've downloaded and opened the game yesterday, and I'm still analysing new information incoming during my first move. The newly-arrived GOTM 19 QSC results are also part of my education. At this rate I'll take all month just to complete the first 1000 years.

Best of luck to all, and thanks to the Cracker team for what promises to be a great learning experience, one way or another. And thank you, Moonsinger for your lessons in trading. I'm sure I'm going to use them.

@Moonsinger-- glad to see you love that farming so much. Not my cup o' tea, but glad to see you enjoy it (and do so well at it). Have you ever considered a succession game? I am sure your pre-farming skills would be a welcome addition to any team.

@ Borealis--good luck getting your first solo win...and THANKS--now I am up in 4 succession games---guess GOTM and Epics have to wait.

I was up for Predator (hey, it's unlikely I'll win anyway) but as I don't have PTW it wasn't an option.

If Pred games come out in 1.29f I will play them. I like a challenge, and to be honest, my play needs a boost to the aggression level.

But I daresay GOTM20 on Open will be a challenge. :D

@ Moonsinger--yes they are great for civ snacking in between GOTM or Epics-type games....that is, unless you are foolish enough to be playing five at a time, and come up for your turns in four of the five.

There is also lots of variety in the games--including lots of interesting and challenging varients--many of which can provide focus on specific aspects of gameplay. Examples in 4 of the games I am in right now (three of them hosted by GOTM regulars, LKendter and Hotrod):

Game 1: LK45--emperor 100k culture--no war except to stop spaceship launch or AFTER reaching 100K w/o doubling

Game 2: LK48--deity vs. all the scientific civs

Game 3: HOT5--emperor w/no iron at all. Conquest/domination only

Game 4: Emperor builder game w/ no warring or trading for techs--only allowed to shoot for spaceship.

This is my first (solo) Deity attempt, after jumping in at CTR1, an SG where only people who have never won emperor (...which started before I won my GOTM19 game...;)) could join.
So I don't expect to win this game but I do like to have a shot at a 'regular' Deity game. Cracker was very generous last month and this could be another 'do-able' game where the map is concerned...

After much soul-searching, I have decided that the last gotm proved I still have a lot of fundamentals to learn better. So therefore, I will go Conquest instead of Open. At some point, I want to see how I fair in a normal Diety game. However, this is not the month for that experiment.

I'm skipping GOTM20 this month since I was busy with my own scenario creation and Deity will be a a looong game which I do not have the time to commit. As Moonsinger said, playing Civ3 is a time to wind down after a stressy job. I would have played Open Class if I did play this month. G'luck to you all. Hope to be back for the next one!

I'm playing Conquest. Why? (I need an excuse?). Because I'm a wimp! I've never played Deity and it scared me . It's going pretty well so far, and in retrospect I probably could have handled Open, but I easily meet the (lack of) qualifications for Conquest.

After much deliberating, since my normal level of play is quite clearly in need of the extra help in conquest level (but then if I did reasonably at conquest it might seem a bit false - like if I'd achieved a respectable place in a marathon after being allowed to cycle part of the way.) I'm not sure.

Besides, I checked and found that I finished in the top half of the scores (just!) in GOTM13. So that's that decision made for me...

I'm playing open because I don't know how to play the other classes. Actually I haven't played in months but happened on this forum and this contest so decided to fire up Civ 3 PTW. I have never played at the Deity level so thought it would be a great challenge to just survive.

Before I downloaded game though I thought I better try a sample Deity game with the Spanish to remember how to play.

The first try was an absolute disaster. I have never seen so many barbarians so close to a starting city in my life. I couldn't build warriors or spearmen fast enough to keep them out. OK, start another game with the barbarians toned down some. That went better but the AI players were always way ahead of me in techs. I finally developed a survival strategy and this morning started GOTM 20. We will see how it goes when I can report at the 1st spoiler, I'm almost there and still alive.
