View Full Version : F^4 What does your spouse think of you playing civ? What does (s)he do while U play?
Yndy Jun 13, 2003, 02:07 AM My wife is OK with the whole idea which I think it’s great. She also plays civ 3 usually at monarch but she can beat Emperor if she wants to. She’s studying to become a specialized MD so I can play while she studies and everything is OK.
cracker Jun 13, 2003, 02:11 AM My wife protests vehemently when I do not pay enough attention to her and then she does things to make it impossible for me to concentrate. ;)
That's one of the reason's I have Civs installed on the lap top so I can play when I am off on assignments and she is not around.
ltcoljt Jun 13, 2003, 02:18 AM When you've been married as long as me you don't give a darn what she is doing while you play.
And as far as child support, hey hey, the baby is 18.
:band:
Capt Buttkick Jun 13, 2003, 02:19 AM Civ is preferred to GTA :)
She doesn't play any games herself which means I probably don't have as much time as you guys at the game :(
feght Jun 13, 2003, 02:57 AM I no longer have a partner!!
:rotfl:
Darkness Jun 13, 2003, 03:01 AM I'm not married, but my girlfriend doens't like civ3 much. She prefers watching TV and commenting on it, while I make agreeing sounds to her comments... (often hardly hearing them)....
DaviddesJ Jun 13, 2003, 03:04 AM I pretty much only play in the middle of the night, after my kids have gone to bed.
mudfoot Jun 13, 2003, 03:09 AM Let's just say that I limit my playing civ to the GOTM games. This way, I'm at least part of the month able to give her the attention she apparently lacks when I'm playing :cringe:.
Since I'm new at this posting stuff, I wanna thank cracker and the entire GOTM team for setting up a great game every month. :worship: I can't even comprehend the amount of time and effort these people put in to this (certainly not without getting killed by their significant others :sniper: ). That I mention this here, is that while I'm greatfull, my wife would probably kill cracker at first sight (if I were to devulge he is responsible for my lack of attention :mischief: )!
edited: still new at this - few errors in my smillies

Same here. It's a good thing to have the PC and the TV in the same room. I can also take a peek at the TV while the Iroqouis land a Pikeman and next turn I wonder how did the Iroqouis take my undefended city.
mad-bax Jun 13, 2003, 03:33 AM My wife does the ironing whilst watching Soaps on TV after the kids get to bed. She barely tolerates me spending any time on the computer, but when she's ironing and soaps are on and there are no chores she can think for me to do I'm "OK-ish".
To compensate, I pretend to have to work late most nights and spend an hour after work playing CIV on my laptop. My wife thinks I'm working late, my boss thinks I'm working late, I win both ways..:)
Of course if anyone should tell either my wife or my boss about my deceitful behaviour, things could go very badly for us both ;)

Same :). My wife just think Civ3 is a dangerous addictive drug that is not compatible with raising 4 childs (8, 6, 2, 1). I would agree with her, except I love the challenge of the GOTM + the learning.
My solution is to play as much as possible at odds hours (lunch break / after work but before retruning home / even in my car  )
So I have to rush my decisions and can not concentrate enough.
Holiday period would give me some more time. I just can wait for July's GOTM21 - Mediterranean Melee :D
TedJackson Jun 13, 2003, 03:41 AM Well my gf/partner has had eighteen years to get used to my gaming and other less mentionable habits :)
In general it doesn't impact our lives except for GotM 18 where I became so embroiled in war that every turn was taking an age. I spent a lot more time playing thet month and I started to get the acid comments, "Spending the night with your computer again!", "Are coming to bed tonight? Or shall I bring you a blanket and pillow", you know the sort of thing. :)
In the end I compromised but didn't manage to complete the game in time to submit. :(

a space oddity Jun 13, 2003, 04:03 AM My husband is usually on the next computer (we have a very decent setup in the attic) tinkering on our family website. I guess I'm lucky :). It was he who introduced me to civ2 many years ago so he can't really complain now ;).
col Jun 13, 2003, 04:03 AM Mm- answered this is another thread. She trades extensively on Ebay. This keeps her occupied while I carry out my Civ activities. If I cold find a way to occupy the dogs too, I could get another couple of hours in ......
ControlFreak Jun 13, 2003, 08:19 AM She can't stand it. Now that I have a laptop from work she thinks I've become a workoholic.;) Come to think of it, my boss does too. I still wait til the kids go to bed and the wife starts watching drivel on the TV. Then I sit the the back of the screen facing her and play away. I have been trying to go to bed at the same time though.:)

"Yes dear."
"Mmm-hmm."
"Really?"
"She didn't!?"
Either I've gotten really good at multi-tasking between Civ and listening to what happened during her day or she just thinks I have.
Then her phone rings and it's her mother/sister/friend and I'm off the hook...

Creepster Jun 13, 2003, 08:42 AM My wife hates civilization with a vengence. I think it has to do with the amount of time I spend at it. My biggest problem is she doesn't understand that my admin role has nothing to do with playing the game. In her eyes they are the same. So whenever I am processing the results she considers that playing.
Oh and Cracker if you ever come to NJ keep a low profile. For some reason she associates your name with my increase in playing time.
hotrod0823 Jun 13, 2003, 08:45 AM She hates it! Usually she is sleeping or not home from work yet. My prime play time is from about 10:00 pm to 2:00 AM or 6:00 - 7:30 PM when she is working late.
My favorite time to play is on Saturdays and Sundays when our 2 year old is napping from 2:00 - 4:30 PM. Provided the "honey do" list is completed.

Beware! Don't have another, let alone twins! Their naps just never seem to line up anymore.
scubagtr Jun 13, 2003, 09:00 AM She doesn't mind it at all. It has actually become part of the routine, get home from work, have dinner and then she askes,' Is it time for us to go play your game? We both sit up in my computer room and watch TV, while I play Civ and she reads her magazines.
The sad part is that downstairs I have a 65" widescreen HDTV, but we usually end up watching TV on my old beatup 25" crap TV, where the color is all messed up. But that's where the Civ game is, so that's where we go.
However, listening to her stories and watching TV, one does lose track sometimes. Like " Where did the Americans go?" Oh, I guess someone destroyed them!! or like, Hey, where did that army come from.
rabies Jun 13, 2003, 10:07 AM Lots of married guys here..all with the same problem with the wife and kids as me! Good to see I am not alone.
I pretty much am resorted to playing starting around 11:00pm/midnight until I can't stay awake anymore (typically 2am..maybe 3am on the weekends). This is after the little ones and the wife have gone to bed.
I also get to sneak in some time every thursday at 10:00pm when the wife sits in front of the TV to watch ER....and does not want to be distracted by my presence!

I can understand this one completely.

You been to my house have you. The only problem I have is the nudge she gives me at 6:00am or the fact that my little one doesn't sleep past 6:30 am ever. Being able to sleep to 8:00 would be a dream after going to bed at 3:00am on Friday.

Bam-Bam Jun 13, 2003, 11:35 AM "You really need to get more sleep"
"That's just another addictive behavior"
Mildly tolerates it. Thinks I should be doing more things around the house--as if taking care of the two yearold while she is on bedrest isn't enough...
My playing time is much like hotrods--after daughter is in bed and usually up until too late in the morning.
hotrod0823 Jun 13, 2003, 11:44 AM while she is on bedrest isn't enough...
Sounds like you and Pebbles have another one on the way!
Good luck!
Trying to convince my wife we need another baby, she is not buying it not yet anyway ;)
pman67 Jun 13, 2003, 11:54 AM My wife used to complain that civ took away from her time on the computer.
(you know- chat rooms and bejeweled  )
My solution, buy her her own pc and a router to share the net.
Can't quite convince her to install civ on hers though:mischief:
alamo Jun 13, 2003, 11:58 AM For those of you who missed my brilliant post in the 'Real Life' thread:
Yep - I play games while the misses watches those compelling docu-drama shows.
If I were producing one of those: OK, this guy is a looser, he screws up, he gets what he deserves - end of story.
How it gets made: Poor guy is a victum - feel sorry for him. Did we mention he brought it on himself? Oh, we almost forgot - he left a trail of destruction on the way down. Gosh, maybe you shouldn't feel sorry for him at all.
Xevious Jun 13, 2003, 03:28 PM My wife has her own hobbies on the computer, including AcroChallenge, Heroes of M&M, and, of course, all the time-wasters at the assorted online game sites. We both have our own computers in the front room (where most people would have a sitting room right by the front door). The kids (6 and 8) also have their own computers. Like scubagtr I have a nice HDTV home theater in the living room that gets used MUCH lesss than the tv in the computer room. Ah well :)

...or you have been to MY house! My little one sleeps till about 7:00am..so I get a half hour on you! ;) Nothing like getting started on the 'honey do' list first thing saturday morning....:cringe:
drewshark Jun 13, 2003, 03:53 PM I travel alot so I usually play on the road, sometimes taking two weeks off at a time. If I'm home and playing, it is when she and our son are asleep! I don't think she has much tolerance for civ with my compulsive behavioral tendencies!!!

Me too  :D  depending of my mood
Ricardo Jun 13, 2003, 04:07 PM My wife does not really play computer games and doesnt really understand my fascination with them. However, she does tolerrate me playing endlessly pretty well as long as I dont let too much other work pile up. Now that we have a 8 month old baby my lack of free time will probably prohibit me from ever being a great Civ player.
Of course recently my son got into my computer area of the house and started to eat the manual for CivIII... I figure if he can digest that manual at his age we might have another great Civ player on our hands in a couple of years.

A year or so ago I was addicted to counterstrike, and my girlfriend used to make a big effort to distract me from my games. Amazing how crap your aim can get when distracted.....
Of course now we have a 5 month old son, she just dumps him on my knee when he wakes up from his naps. Then I get reminded about the "to do" list....
In fact she doesn't really mind my game playing in moderation. She says that at least she knows where I am..! She also used to cane me at Quake 3 until she got bored of it.

zagnut Jun 13, 2003, 06:28 PM I didn't want to speculate on the answer to this question. Therefore, I asked my wife. She said she thought it was great that I had this addiction because it kept me out of her hair and kept my brain active.
Won't she be surprised when I play it even more now!
Renata Jun 13, 2003, 07:41 PM Boyfriend, not husband, but
- 'Don't play too long', followed by a semi-worried look
- 'What are those things that look like mushrooms?', followed by a slightly baffled look
- 'Come over here and be social', followed by a lecherous look and gratuitous groping
We don't live together, so I don't play civ much when he's here, but he has been witness to the odd marathon session, usually while he's similarly absorbed watching a golf tournament or puttering around in the kitchen.

Oh yes, I got that too :)
Maybe instead of 'goody huts' they should be called mushrooms. There are poison mushrooms (barbarians), magic mushrooms of knowledge (give you a tech), mushrooms with little friendly dwarves living in them (settler), and so forth :)

OneFastWarrior Jun 13, 2003, 09:15 PM Not Married, but My Girlfriend said she'd rather have me sitting here playing for hours than be out drinking with my friends;)
civ_steve Jun 13, 2003, 09:34 PM My wife will usually start glazing over in front of the TV. That's my signal to slowly, quietly, slink off to the office, and fire up Civ!! She'll come to a little later, come by and say 'Time for Bed', to which I'll reply 'Okay, just after I finish this turn and save'. Several turns later she comes back down, with this glaring look in her eye  ... Eventually, I head up.
The only time I really push it is the last day of the month. Gotta get the game done to submit!! [dance]
Don't worry Cracker, I haven't mentioned your name yet so there's still a town or two you can visit without a disguise.
Peanut Jun 17, 2003, 01:09 AM She is usually VERY unimpressed. I can generally only play after the two kids (8 & 4 years old) are in bed, various household jobs done and so on.
That, along with the compulsion to play "... just a few more turns" or ".. .until I finish XXX" or whatever, means that even with the best intentions of definitely turning the thing off after an hour, two or three hours can easily go by ... you all know what I mean, don't you ?
Then I get sarcastic comments like "you listen to your military adviser more than you listen to me" or "Why doesn't your domestic adviser recommend that you've had enough and that you should go to bed ! NOW !"
Sadly she just has no idea of just how vitally important it is for me stay up late to manage foreign affairs, encourage culture and learning while stimulating the economy, and at the same time defend our borders and to vigorously wage ruthless war when necessary.
But strangely enough she loves me nonetheless. Perhaps my saving grace is her pursuit of quilting, papercraft, cardmaking etc. etc., which have meant that I have not seen the surface of our dining room table for months. Seems that there's more than one addict in our family !
King Of America Jun 19, 2003, 10:29 AM My wife also hates the game, but after we read Women are from Venus, Men are from Mars, she tolerates it. I try to encourage her to call a friend while I play (right out of the book, in its own way).
Orna, our five-year girl thinks it's boring except for when I "talk to the faces" (diplomacy). But she knows to go to the computer room first if she wants a drink in the middle of the night.
Orna did inadvertantly give me extra time to play--she talked us into getting her a dog and since I don't like dogs, my wife takes the pooch out for 45-minute walks at night.
Phaedria Jun 20, 2003, 11:09 AM My husband tolerates my playing. Oncer the kids are in bed and the chores are done he likes to watch the sport/listen to loud tuneless music on his headphones etc. My presence would be a distraction so he's quite happy for me to 'go and play on that computer'. He has absolutely no understanding if why I find it so compelling - but hey I dont understand football!
Our 4 year old son finds the gamefascinating - he always wants me to fight and he likes watching the palace get built
I do think Civ addiction is a bit detrimental to family life so I make a big effort to only play when everyone els is asleep/occupied. No football on the telly in the summer means that I havent even STARTED GOTM Spain yet... Heh ho!
Phaedria
Nightfa11 Jun 22, 2003, 10:31 AM My wife and I play sometimes together. We like to play the world map next to each other in North America and take over the world!!!!
For GOTM and stuff, she doesn't mind, I play in the living room (laptop) while watching TV
PattonTwo Jun 27, 2003, 03:16 PM Same response from my wife on most occasions.
However, a few months ago a friend gave me a great idea.
On some of my games, I give my capital her name. Then the next few cities are named after our kids and family/friends. It usually gets a good laugh and for some reason she's more accepting of it...
Unless she finds me in the computer room at 2 am after we went to bed together at 10! Then I'm REALLY in trouble.
danchamp Jun 28, 2003, 04:49 AM My wife tolerates my gaming habit, and notices enough what I'm doing to prefer me playing Civ to GTA or Counter-Strike. She also has her own PC in our study and surfs the net some evenings while I play.
She got a horse last year so that takes her out for a couple of hours most evenings, leaving me to listen out for the wean, amuse the dogs (a handful of hide chews does the trick), and play Civ :)
I do need to moderate my own play though. Sitting in front of a PC at work all day and then coming home for a 5 hour session does seem like overdoing it sometimes, especially when the sun is shining, the grass needs cutting, etc, etc.
