View Full Version : Preview: Hessish Axeman
utahjazz7 Jun 16, 2003, 12:41 PM Well, I just threw this together for fun today, goofin' around. I'll finish it at some point though. I guess it could be a Swordsman or Medieval Infantry flavour unit--maybe even replace the longbowman, if you wanted. I just wanted another unit for Germany.
It's not supposed to be historic, just something that I wanted to make. So, please don't post about it not being realistic on account of this or that. :)
There is one thing that I might change. I might try to make him a bit overweight. I haven't seen too many "non-fit" units around, so why not?
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads4/HK.gif
The yellow is civ-specific.
GEChallenger Jun 16, 2003, 12:57 PM Excellent! Great to see you back doing foot units again.
COAtlantis1745 Jun 16, 2003, 01:18 PM Now blast it Utah, your gonna make me feel regret for uninstalling Civ now! This would make a damn fine feudal/medieval infantry replacement, at least IMHO. I HATE that bleedin morning star mace.
Raw is War? Jun 16, 2003, 05:41 PM Looks very nice! :goodjob: :goodjob: :)
LouLong Jun 16, 2003, 06:05 PM Yep nice to see you back. :goodjob:
I know the unit is not real and specific but if you refer to Hesse, the name should be Hessian (just in case, I know it is not very important).
Looks like your trip to Germany made you eager for German units :)

 you uninstalled civ
And Utah i think you should make the sheild civ specific and make the clothes a different colour other than that it is superb
hetairoi22 Jun 16, 2003, 07:00 PM I actually like the placement for civ-specific coloring. It makes it very noticeable, which IMHO, is good. :)
Looks great, Utah!! :D
mrtn Jun 16, 2003, 07:04 PM I think the lion (?) should not be striped like that, as it's harder to see, other than that it's very cool, especially for a medieval/fantasy scenario.

Well, I did a search and both Hessish and Hessian seem to be used. I'm not sure which is most proper though. I do like Hessian better, so I'll probably change the name.

The lion is striped because it's supposed to match the seal of Hessen. I know it doesn't show up great, but oh well.

Yoda Power Jun 16, 2003, 08:53 PM very cool Utah, I can defiently use this one:)

Yea, I kept having so many problems with adding new resources that I finally just said hell with it for awhile, at least until Conquests come out, then I most likely will reinstall it :)
I also see that work is resuming on the Egyptian Spearman unit I asked for MONTHS AGO! hehe.

Utah: I would think that the heraldic description of the lion is only "striped", not "striped with x number of stripes". So if you could have fewer, broader stripes, that could maybe make it clearer. :hmm:

Yeah, especially as it's just another historical hallucination -- AFAIK the Civ3 "medieval" infantry historically corresponds ONLY to knights fighting dismounted (e.g., the English at Crecy, or crusaders storming the walls wherever). No PBI ("Poor Bloody Infantry") ever tramped across Europe looking like that!

Kindred72 Jun 17, 2003, 01:44 AM Looks great. I actually need a unit like this too.
Kinboat Jun 17, 2003, 02:29 AM Go ahead and make him a little fatter... If only for more variation. Looks nice.

I've never heard Hessish in English but Hessisch is used in German.
As a native Hessian (Frankfurt) it would be a shame if that lion wouldn't be striped. Fortunately for me, you're leaving it like that which looks just fine.
Even though a fictional unit, the coat of arms (the striped lion) comes from the late 13th century and might be a little late for an axeman. Sort of like putting a version of the U.S. flag on a knight's shield or something BUT I like it the way you made it!
Dom Pedro II Jun 17, 2003, 03:38 AM I thought the lion was an American flag for a split second!
embryodead Jun 17, 2003, 04:13 AM yeah I got the same impression at first glance (US flag)...
btw is Hessian just a german mercenary or something else?
Dom Pedro II Jun 17, 2003, 04:24 AM The Hessian soldiers were indeed mercenaries in the 17th and 18th centuries... but I think in this context, it is meant to represent the region the Hessians come from.
Shady Jun 17, 2003, 04:39 AM Hesse is a state in Germany. Hessian is the adjective form in English. MOST of the mercenaries for the british in the war of 1776 were recruited from Hesse.
LouLong Jun 17, 2003, 04:44 AM I agree Hessisch is probably German (ich hoffe nur Ich habe nicht alles vergessen ;) ).
I agree with Kinboat, if you can/want, try to make him a bit different from the throwing axe Frank.
Now, one point for the default / run... (xcept death) : from its look the axe seems pretty heavy so he should hold/carry it close to the iron part and not in the middle of the wood stick. In case you haven't carried an axe yourself...
Keep on, this is needed... (a bit like the beautiful middle East spearmman;) ).
:goodjob:

Yep, from Hesse and from Hanover too, because the George kings originated from Hanover (the King's German Legion during Napoleonian era).
But that is not the same period !
Dom Pedro II Jun 17, 2003, 05:02 AM Well, when did Hesse become a distinct region or state?
Dom Pedro II Jun 17, 2003, 05:07 AM Just a lil reading material for ya... provided by the good people at Britannica Online.
The Hessians are generally supposed to be descended from the Frankish tribe of the Chatti , whose homeland lay north of the Main River. The Chatti were Christianized by St. Boniface in the early 8th century. Their territory was governed by various dynasties of counts beginning in the 10th century, but in 1130 the region of Hesse was joined to the landgraviate of Thuringia. Upon the death in 1247 of the last landgrave of Thuringia, Henry Raspe, Hesse was acquired by his niece, Sophia, the wife of Henry II of Brabant. Sophia gave the territory to her son, Henry I the Child (died 1308). He founded the Brabant dynasty of Hesse and was raised to the rank of a prince of the Holy Roman Empire in 1292.
For the next two centuries the landgraves of Hesse expanded their territory and often clashed with the neighbouring archbishop-electors of Mainz. Hesse was twice partitioned in the 15th century, but Philip the Magnanimous , landgrave from 1509 to 1567 and Hesse's greatest ruler, reunited the territory. Philip introduced Lutheranism into Hesse in 1526 and the next year founded the first Protestant university in Europe, at Marburg. By his last will Philip divided Hesse between his four sons into Hesse-Kassel, Hesse-Darmstadt, Hesse-Rheinfels, and Hesse-Marburg. Rheinfels and Marburg were absorbed by the other two lines in 1583 and 1648, respectively. In 1945 most of the Hesse territories and part of old Nassau were merged to form the Land of Greater Hesse (Gross-Hessen), later called simply Hessen.
utahjazz7 Jun 25, 2003, 08:35 AM I'm sorry, but I no longer have intentions of finishing this unit. In fact, I have no current plans to do any more unit creation. I simply have no desire. I enjoy creating the models, but the animation and rendering is too much, and they take up too much time.
If anyone needs a model made and wants to animate and render everything themselves, I could do that--no whole, finished units though. I could also attempt to make props and such, if someone needs them made. For instance, I made the shield with the lion and the helmet for this unit.
Here's my Poser file for this figure, if someone is interested in animating him. Here's to hoping that Kindred72 is interested! His animations are better than mine now anyway.

I would be happy to finish this for you, but it won't be for some time. I have a number of units i'm working on for Kal-El. However, If I could get you to put together some models for these units for Kal-El, that would be great. Let me know if you are interested and i'll get you some info on some models I need. And, thank's for the compliment on the animations. Your models are better than mine, so maybe we could work together and pump out some units.

Thanks for agreeing to finish this unit for me. I really appreciate it. Come to thing of it, I think that this was my first unit request, and I got a response! ;) Which units are you planning on making for Kal-el? I did see his "DyP and Conquests" thread. Are those the units? Which are you planning on first? Send your ideas about how the models should look, and I'll see what I can do.
I sent you a pm with contact information in it. Let me know what you're thinking.
Ozymandias Jun 25, 2003, 01:22 PM Utahjazz,
I'm sure I speak for many by expressing my dismay that you're no longer making units! You're work has been excellent and widely appreciated.
Best Regards

Kal-el Jun 25, 2003, 03:59 PM Utah,
I love the idea that you are going to be producing a bunch of new models for others to animate and convert! That gets right back to the old idea of developing unit creation teams. I hope you find some people who you feel comfortable with animating your models. This sort of production team effort could really produce a lot of great units.
Ps: I would love to be included in any discussions regarding all those units for DyP. :)
Nder Jun 25, 2003, 04:10 PM yay, Utah and Kindred working together! More units for DyP, er I mean Civ3.
Kindred72 Jun 25, 2003, 04:45 PM Like I said thought, I have alot of things on my plate right now, I will try to get to this when I can.

Yoda Power Oct 06, 2003, 01:48 PM Utah now that your back creating units, I would like to know if you might would complete this one? Im asking becuase its really a nice unit, and I would love to have it in my game:)
The Last Conformist Oct 06, 2003, 02:00 PM Since knights in the late medieval period very often did fight dismounted, I don't see anything much wrong with CivIII's Medieval Infantry unit graphic-wise. Indeed, I love the look of it, as may be suggested by my avatar.
What I do find weird is that both Medieval Infantry and Pikemen turn up earlier than does Knights. That just makes no sense historically.

The only knights AFAIK to successfully fight dismounted were the English -- always on the tactical defensive, always with secured flanks, always with longbowmen (combined arms & all that) -- in the 100 years war; the French attempt to emulate them was a singular disaster BECAUSE it was all these guys in plate armor, trudging forward, ignoring their own crossbowmen ...
Yes, I agree, it's a very cool looking unit. What I'm tempted to do is to have "English Knights" be a separate unit with a higher DF and using the Medieval Infantry anim on the defense.
-- & "makes no sense historically" is the source of the larger part of my rants re: Civ3 in general! ;)

Also, it should be completed tomorrow.
