View Full Version : My possible future units

OK, since it is likely there will be a Napoleon scenario in Conquests and that I don't knwo what new units there will be for it, I will not work too hard on my Napoleonian units (you can see previews in that thread http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=53797) and after finishing my Russian infantry troops I will probably only do Bavarian infantry + Polish troops and finish dragoons before Conquests ships in.

So I thought I might try to create (copy/paste/pixel modifs) some Chinese units (less likely to be in Conquests).
It is not sure I will finish them but I sure will try my best.
They are from the warring States and Qin dynasty (like the terracotta ones in Xi An).

You can find the pictures below.

+ I would require help for a later Chinese unit if someone is interested. It is a Ming artillery unit which would be easier to model than to copy/paste or do by hand by me. It comes roughly at the same time as the Hwacha and needs one servant. I am not going to do to it myself + please feel free to use this example.

Here are the units I plan on doing (provided at least some people are interested) :

Spear

Crossbow

LouLong
Jun 18, 2003, 06:25 AM
Chariot (I might add an "umbrella" on the chariot to make it more specific)

Yes please. :D

Ah, Yoda and mrtn what would I do without your support !

Now a question :

light blue dress like in the pictures or civ-specific colors instead ? The red part is IMHO too small to be valid for civ-specific colors.

About the umbrella, here is what I had in mind. Should I add it or not ? As you can see this one is more Indian.

go with civ-specific coloring

We want civ-specific colours! We want civ-specific colours!
I would probably use these units for other asian civs too, so CSC is very good to have (actually this is a reason for me not to use Kinboats chinese :(). The umbrella could be cool, but it's no must, if it's hard to do. I think four horses are too much (even if it is historically correct), and I think the chariot and the crossbowman is more important than the spearman, as we can use the japanese spearmen from ptw.

Get al life ??

Yes probably :D

In a way I guess I am lucky my girlfriend works overseas at the moment and that I don't see her so often... or ain't I :crazyeye:  .

OK, civ-specific colors. Everybody (:p ) agrees about the light blue dress for that ?

Chariot : sure it will be a two-horse one (after all it is only copy/paste). I don't think the umbrella should be the most difficult part but I will see (haven't started yet). It would definitely give a certain look to it though.

Spear : I don't think it looks very much like the one in PTW. He will be the first on my list because it will be easier for me to practice on a spearman and I like the family look (uniform) the share so I will go for the bunch.

Anybody willing to do the Ming artillery ?

Yoda Power
Jun 18, 2003, 03:34 PM
cool, you should try to make one for each nationality first, then move on to the other unit IMHO.

I like the Mali guys and the Korean heavy spearman. :)

And (because I want to sound like your English teacher) I am gonna do exactly the opposite ;) Really, I prefer to try (except if I am getting bored with one of them) to do a cltural group so that if fills in the different niches of one civ (if needed).
But these units will take me a loooonnnngggg while to do. So just tell me your preferences (like Mali and Korean guys).

BTW the Mali guys were long called West Sudanese when Europeans called Sudan all Africa south of Sahara.

And please tell me if someone is interested in making the Ming artillery. It looks easy from here.

BTW the Mali guys were long called West Sudanese when Europeans called Sudan all Africa south of Sahara... The farther away something is, the less correct the names are.

And if you'll only do one culture group I think you should do the Malians(?). The asians may use the chinese units already made and the japanese from PTW, but there are less africans around. Maybe you could base the Mali cavalry on Kinboats Norman Knight? Just put a layer of cloth over everything. :D

Anyway I will start with the three first Chinese units then it seems I will do Malians (in July.... 2004 probably).

Feel free to contribute !;)

Steph

Yes, start by the Chinese! They are really needed. I hate to have European looking Chinese units.
And even if I can "forget" some parts of the tech tree (like cavalry) for some civ (Aztec), I can't do this with China.

OK, thanks and sorry I missed your first post.
Well it is not easy to guess what you can do from your post so I will just ask a question bluntly :
if I gave you a pcx (picture with all the anims for one action) with the base model, could you complete it (copy/paste with some modifs (light, angle) hats or other parts + redo some colors) ?
In that case your help would be extremely welcome and useful. It is boring and you need to check a few things at pixel size but not very difficult otherwise (hey even I can do it). But since I don't have a real base for the units of this thread, would you mind starting by helping me finsih some Napoleonian units already in the making. If you are interested send me a PM with your mail and I will send you one such file with a few first done as models + explanations (actually you might be much better than me at graphics).
Just do you have a paint program (PSP or Photoshop) ?

BTW Steph what do you think of an "umbrella" for the Chinese chariot (coming later ?).

And you have not answered my quizz in the Napoleon previews thread :p

I think the khmer cavalry is good, but I would proberly prefer a bowman:)

Sorry, I was really busy in the office today, and I just scan the forum very quickly and missed your quizz.

I can't answer for the chinese, I'm not an expert of this part of the world. Sorry, I don't know everything about every subjet :p

Shame on me:spank:

I think Kal-el would love you forever if you made those. Especially the Khmer Swordsman which could be used for the Siamese UU.

Please make all of them, and for the other unit creators out there reading this thread, there is no way Loulong can make all of these via cut-n-paste, so you guys should feel free to jump in and build some of these yourselves. :D

More Units! More Units! More Units! More Units! More Units! More Units! More Units! More Units! More Units! More Units! More Units! More Units! More Units! More Units! More Units! More Units! Yes, I will do some but I hoped to create an electricity shock as well so that some unit creators wake up before Conquests ships in !
Thanks for relaying.

I like and respect Kal El but ... I already got a girlfriend ;) so I can survive without his love for a while :crazyeye:

Well, I am actually working on finishing (with some much appreciated help) some Napoleon units but that does not prevent me from doing some search on how I will make the three first Chinese units could look like. These are very EARLY previews so comments and critics are welcome RIGHT NOW !

To be compared with first page....

Dom Pedro II
Jun 21, 2003, 08:10 PM
Umm.... it looks a little flat. Almost like Civ2.

mrtn
Jun 21, 2003, 08:15 PM
I agree with Dom Pedro II. Have you made it from scratch, or is it CnP? I also think it's a bad idea to have a red shadow and a red hat (?). This unit isn't isometric (math-speak for "slightly from above").

LouLong
Jun 22, 2003, 04:29 AM
Flatness/ Isometric : point taken
Red : not a pb right now, just trying to represent the unit.

Loulong, you should check the Unit Requests thread... there are alot of high quality pictures of ancient chinese units which you could use as templates for your planned chinese units.
