View Full Version : City Gun
Hunter Jun 22, 2003, 12:30 AM Well this is almost a replacement for my earlier firebase.
This unit was designed around the large guns found in cities during the last century. It has however very specific flags needed to achieve optimal usage from the AI.
Flags and Stats needed:
Remove the checkmark from the Go To box
make the bombard higher than the Artillery
The range longer than the artillery
Rate of Fire 3-4
Operational range equal to paratrooper
Check make in zone of control
Check make in bombard effects
Load box checked
Bombard box checked
Airdrop box checked
Foot unit, ranged attack animation, and lethal sea bombardment flags
The most important flags and stats are the removal of the go to check mark and the foot unit flag. The reason is the AI still treats this unit as any artillery unit as long as you do not have the IMMOBILE flag selected. This unit should be available at the time of replaceable parts, making it’s air drop ability only available later with the advent of airports.
Giving it defensive stats is not recommended since without defensive stats it creates a unique tactical unit that must be protected. It can be placed by boats along coast lines to control major sea ways but It’s capture can seriously change the tide of war. With the foot unit flag it can then later be placed anywhere on the map with a helicopter (The Ai does seem to treat it as a paratrooper however I have only seen it used once.)
These stats are recommended so as not to unbalance the current game setup by creating a situation where the AI will build a multiple of these in one city, or only these instead of artillery.
enjoy:)
EDIT: Check the artillery box as well

Hunter Jun 22, 2003, 12:38 AM O I should also say that it can be called City defences since that is why it is so large and has a outer wall with bunkers. Well anyway have fun if you like it. :)
Dom Pedro II Jun 22, 2003, 12:43 AM Very nice... I like it.
Dom Pedro II Jun 22, 2003, 01:50 AM He likes it more... ;)
nagelfetisch Jun 22, 2003, 05:20 AM :goodjob: YES,YES,I've been waiting for this since the game came out and if the AI uses it and uses it the right way,I'm in 7th heaven:love::goodjob:
The artillery box in AI Strategies should be checked, right?!
unscratchedfoot Jun 22, 2003, 06:32 AM Kick-ass unit! I tested it out with a range of 4 and 18 power/5 rate of fire. Works great. I changed the gun sound though and renamed it "Coastal Gun".
As an alternative to the airdrop idea which was good, I make it unbuildable and each player gets one at the start of the game between their core cities. It is capturable. The reason I did this is because I'm concerned that ai will either not build them at all, only stack them up in cities (most probable), or puke them all over the land turning the terrain into a silly field of guns (capturable so not destroyed by fighting).
Hunter Jun 22, 2003, 10:37 AM @Dom Pedro II and Wyrmshadow
Glad you like it :)
@ nagelfetisch
Very good piont yes The artillery box in AI Strategies should be checked. I have only done a few AI tests but so far it seems positive.
@ unscratchedfoot
Good Ideas:)
horsematrix Jun 22, 2003, 11:04 AM looks great cant' wait to use it in the game :goodjob:
Kindred72 Jun 22, 2003, 11:29 AM great idea! Looks awsome.:goodjob:
Vuldacon Jun 22, 2003, 12:02 PM Great City Defense Weapon Hunter...Love to BLAST the Big Guns and I am looking forward to doing some damage with this one!
Ed O'War Jun 22, 2003, 01:14 PM Excellent unit.
CivGeneral Jun 22, 2003, 02:06 PM Hmm, I wonder If I can make this unit fit inbetween the Trebuchet and the Railroad Gun (AKA Dora)
nmcul Jun 25, 2003, 12:05 AM http://www.stupid-boy.com/smilies/contrib/edoom/mouth_water.gif That is one BIG gun... I can't wait to use it... :goodjob:
Kyborgi Jun 29, 2003, 05:02 PM heh looks VERY nice.
ocedius Jul 02, 2003, 11:30 PM and the AI handles it rather well. Even at regent, its almost impossible to take on the the larger (aka culturally stong) cities. That gun sure packs a wallop..
Thanx for the AWESOME unit. :worship: :worship: :worship:
Timelord Aug 20, 2004, 09:09 PM Could someone please share there pedia and u_32 pix?
THANX
GIDustin Aug 20, 2004, 10:03 PM Most people would be upset that you bumped a thread over a year old, but I actually havent seen this unit before. . . :D

Why?? Is there some unwrittin rule or something (not to be offensive just wondering) :hmm:
Dom Pedro II Aug 21, 2004, 02:31 AM Yes. If the thread was bumped up just to say "Good job!" or something like that... but you've actually asked a question, so I'd say in this particular case, you're alright. ;)
Vuldacon Aug 21, 2004, 05:27 AM here you go Timelord. These are the Large and Small pcx files and the units_32.pcx file. I am not sure if other pcx files were made but hope mine will work for you. Perhaps others have some that may be better.
...and BTW, nothing wrong with asking a question and personally, I believe there is also nothing wrong with thanking a unit creator and or praising a unit at any time but if many people did that it would cause big problems with the New Unit Posts getting lost in it all. :)
here is the zip:

I think I see :) I'll have to watch the dates on the threads.

Thanks, i'm sure that these will do just fine even tough I haven't looked at em yet :)

I have to agree with both side of this, while i'm sure that the unit creaters would like to know how there unit(s) are (?taken?) I can see how posting to an "inactive" thread could cause problems. Now that I am aware of it i'll be a bit more cautious in the future :)
Thanks again for the pcx's
Mr. Will Aug 21, 2004, 01:55 PM I've never seen this unit. It's awesome. BTW, did anyone ever figure out if the AI stacks this thing like crazy in their cities? Do they seem to use it right?

Check out the following link, five pages of units :) thats where I found the citygun and a few others.

this unit is in my Age of IMperialism scenario as a 'Coastal Battery' unit...
flagged as a sea unit (only built on coast) & immobile. it's pretty neat but my only (slight of course) desire would be to remove the encampment around the gun itslef. no biggie though.
haven't actually seen how many the ai has built but i'm under the impression it may be built often if the civ has 'Build Often: Naval Units' flag.
Mr. Will Aug 22, 2004, 11:24 AM Hmmm, but how do you actually look at or download archived units?
Dom Pedro II Aug 22, 2004, 12:48 PM You have to unzip them... unless you have Quicktime, then you can just open the archive and play it straight from there.
I think I might use the City Gun as a Naval Gun in my scenario. The death anim makes that a little difficult, but it'll be hard to tell that it's being bombed...
ocedius Aug 22, 2004, 12:57 PM I never though of this as a naval gun, because there is another unit that looks more like a naval abttery than this. But to each his own ...
Either way, there is a flicster like utility, um, civ3flc I think its called that open flcs by default and integrated quite well with explorer. Too bad this unit isn't more detailed, it makes one very, very, very good defender because the AI stacks it in its cities even with airdrop enabled.

do tell......... ;)
ocedius Aug 23, 2004, 03:03 PM do tell......... ;)
As stupid as it sounds, I can't find it. It is a 3 barrel turret and looks kinda like a destroys' assault battery.
Malchior Aug 23, 2004, 06:27 PM This one?
GoodWin's turret (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=533240&postcount=473)

YES!! Bring on da destroyas' and I shall smite 'em with ma' swatta!!
Mr. Will Aug 24, 2004, 05:24 PM I know how to look at the units, but I don't even see download links.
shadowdude Aug 24, 2004, 06:00 PM This one will be the upgrade to the railroad gun, good job :)
Hunter Aug 26, 2004, 01:01 PM Im glad you like it. :)
I made it to be used as a fixed gun for some of my games like one Vietnam game that I made for myself (I used it as a fire base). I also use it for a city defence in my regular game.
Dom Pedro II Aug 26, 2004, 01:12 PM ocedius: That naval gun is indeed a better choice for a naval gun in the later industrial era.
I need mine for Civil War era... and while the City Gun is only acceptable as a Civil War-era naval gun with a little imagination, the other turret is completely out of the timeframe for the Civil War.
ocedius Aug 26, 2004, 01:23 PM oops. My bad. The naval turret would look kinda stupid in the mid 1800s. But you are a unit creator. Surely you can C'nP something we'd all find useful. :D
Dom Pedro II Aug 26, 2004, 01:27 PM I am extremely inept at CnP... hehe.. That's Rufus's department. :)
El Justo Aug 26, 2004, 01:42 PM i personally prefer hunter's city gun to that naval turret; at least for AoI - 1903
the turret would look out of place in that era (1903)
any chance we could get a version of hunter's gun w/out the city/encampment gfx?
Hunter Aug 26, 2004, 02:57 PM Hmmm I will try and find my 3d file that I made... I may have lost this one (stupit hard drive crash  ). But even so I could try a CnP. I will look this afternoon for the 3d file.

that would be nice. thanks
Hunter Aug 26, 2004, 05:45 PM Found it and changed it so I should be able to animate it tonight.
El Justo Aug 26, 2004, 08:08 PM Found it and changed it so I should be able to animate it tonight.
excellent!!!!
Hunter Aug 27, 2004, 11:38 AM I didnt have time to finish it and I am leaving again till wednesday but I will finish it then along with this one.
El Justo Aug 27, 2004, 11:44 AM thanks hunter. the city gun will be used as a 'coastal battery' unit in my Age of Imperialism scenario.
Dom Pedro II Aug 27, 2004, 01:43 PM What is the other one? Looks older and nice... but the colors sort of give it the impression that it will be firing a man wearing a bright suit into a net... :p
Hikaro Takayama Aug 27, 2004, 08:04 PM Sweet! I could use that second one as an Al Bhed Cannon, the third UU for the Al Bhed in my FF mod (the other two are the Al Bhed Machina and Heavy Machina, which are using Muffins' Warhound and Reaver Titan graphics). It looks like the city gun could give my Makou Cannon a bit of a challenge. :D
Fox Mccloud Jan 22, 2005, 02:39 PM Cool! Needs Civpedia entry though..
Edit: I wonder... What are the chances that the AI will use it?
