View Full Version : New Units: Cobra and Eagle
Kinboat Jun 29, 2003, 10:59 PM Two seperate units but both small so I figured I'd use one post. Just a snake and a bird that people requested a while ago...

piedude Jun 29, 2003, 11:20 PM bloody awesome!
Yoda Power Jun 30, 2003, 01:15 AM hey cool!
Bjorn Bjornson Jun 30, 2003, 02:50 AM Too bad you can't set more than two barbarian units. Wild animals would make good "barbarians," since until a landmass was well settled, wildlife could pose a serious threat to people on the frontiers of civilization.
As always from you, they look stunning.
BeBro Jun 30, 2003, 06:04 AM "Too bad you can't set more than two barbarian units. Wild animals would make good "barbarians," since until a landmass was well settled, wildlife could pose a serious threat to people on the frontiers of civilization."
Exactly. Or they could at least allow different Barbs for every era, then we could use those animals for the first era. :)
Perhaps in "Conquests"?
Anyway, great units again :)
embryodead Jun 30, 2003, 06:24 AM cool, I needed the Eagle :)

... You can choose the animations for the barbarians, just as you do with the modern worker. The only drawback is that your barbarian snakes would be called warriors. :D
As always: nice units Kinboat! I can also use the eagle. :goodjob:
BTW, I thought this would be a thread with helicopters and such, not real cobras.
BeBro Jun 30, 2003, 07:07 AM Yeah, but with real different Barbs for eras they also could rise in strenghts ;)
ocedius Jun 30, 2003, 07:11 AM Bloody nice units mate. Will download and incorporate 'em now.
embryodead Jun 30, 2003, 08:44 AM well you can still use any number of barbarian units in scenario...
KingArthur Jun 30, 2003, 09:02 AM Great animations. I'd personally use the Eagle for recon missions in the ancient age -possibly with a range of 6.
I don't suppose you'd consider making the eagle bigger and putting a rider on it? mrtn could use something like that for a mod and I'm sure it would be welcomed by many other.
Raw is War? Jun 30, 2003, 11:33 AM They look really nice! :goodjob: :goodjob: :)
Shady Jun 30, 2003, 12:50 PM how in the world can you use an eagle as recon? Unless it can talk I don't see how the trainer or whoever pets it can understand what the hell the eagle is quacking about.
Good idea but unrealistic in practice unless you use for like a fantasy mod or something.
Kinboat Jun 30, 2003, 01:49 PM Well with the eagle animations done (that wing flap was harder than it looks :) ) I suppose I could plop a goblin on his back.

Sa~Craig Jun 30, 2003, 03:15 PM If you made the eagle larger it could become Heru the falcoln, sky god of Edfu, which would be cool
Vuldacon Jun 30, 2003, 03:16 PM Kinboat, these units are Great. Living movements and I like the novel Fidget (Snack) for the Cobra. :goodjob:

But don't make him a goblin, just make him humanoid, so it gets more possible uses. An archer would be really cool, but a spearman or something else works just as well.
embryodead Jun 30, 2003, 04:32 PM wouldn't just a bigger version (without the rider) have more uses? "Great Eagles" are both in LotR and Warhammer :p
I use current eagle as a 1.1.3*3 scout, but a Great Eagle could have combat stats.

It's called a "spirit journey." Native American shamans do it all the time. Second nature to 'em. Ingest enough peyote or ayahuasca and you could do it too. ;)
Too bad there's not a separate .flc for "recon." You could use the anims from PTW for the Iroquois and/or Aztec leader as the base unit and the eagle for the recon bit. Oh well...
Great animations! :goodjob:

Then it wouldn't be a eagle anymore it would be more like a griffith. (Not a griffin there is a differance between the two.)
Kinboat Jul 01, 2003, 01:33 AM Well since I'm in a giving mood tonight (and it was an incredibly fast render) I'll do both a larger eagle and a larger eagle with a rider (he's not green :) ) The rider is small because of the wing span of the eagle having to fit in the frame but here is a view.
piedude Jul 01, 2003, 01:51 AM That is awesome, like all your units. Great work kinboat.
Just one thing, Could you just have the colour of the respective civs on the tail of the Great Eagle? It's by no means a big problem BUT IMHO it sort of takes away the "appeal" of the unit when it is covered in the civ's colours!
Again, Awesome work!
KingArthur Jul 01, 2003, 02:57 AM Shady, here's my feeble reasoning: The eagle would fly out and be picked up by one of your spies or people who would then attach a message to the eagle. The eagle would then fly back home with the message which could contain reports on enemy movements etc!
Ok I made that rubbish up in about 10 seconds. In truth I was thinking about a fantasy mod when I wrote it :D but I like dog's explanation better
Kinboat, thanks for considering a rider. I'd go with a human rider too as others have suggested (maybe give him a helmet to make him look more indistinct - you'd need a helmet if you fell off one of those things ;) ). A bow would probably be my weapon of choice but I wouldn't grumble with a spear or Lance.
EDIT: I just noticed the screenshot with the rider -nice. Would the proportions look wrong if you reduced the wing span so as to make the rider bigger?

mrtn Jul 01, 2003, 06:10 AM Kinboat:  :king:
embryodead Jul 01, 2003, 06:41 AM it's PERFECT Kinboat!
Sa~Craig Jul 01, 2003, 07:24 AM wonderful
Kinboat Jul 01, 2003, 04:33 PM Well I made a giant eagle (and posted it already) and increased the frame size to almost maximum... so the rider is easier to see. Sorry Piedude I had already finished and posted it before I saw your suggestion so I couldn't think about it. I hope it doesn't ruin it for you... I actually like the look of the eagle in most of the civ colors.
GIDustin Jul 01, 2003, 07:13 PM With these 5 new units, you have doubled the units available to the "Druids" civ in the MTG Mod. I can even resize your large eagle to a Medium eagle for another. :D Happy days
GIDustin
The TMT Jul 02, 2003, 12:35 PM I seem to remember eading somewhere that if you put two animation entries in the ini file, you get a random set, so maybe you could have one Barbarian unit "Wild Animal" and another "Barbarian" so that you got a random unit out of Kinboat's units?
Just an idea ;)

Kinboat Jul 02, 2003, 02:04 PM Really? Has anyone tested this? Could be an excellent solution if it works.
GIDustin Jul 02, 2003, 06:12 PM I will test it now.
GIDustin
GIDustin Jul 02, 2003, 06:15 PM Civ3 keeps crashing when I give any unit more than one ATTACK1. :(
GIDustin
Amadan Jul 07, 2003, 09:28 AM Very impressive!
Wishsong Nov 12, 2005, 08:28 PM Amazing! If I could just have barbs get 4> units...
EXECUTE ORDER 66!
Orthanc Nov 12, 2005, 10:07 PM I'm going to do this before anyone else, who might be much harsher, does.
Check the date of the last post before yours Wishsong, you just uber :bump: ed this thing, as in you bumped a 2 year old thread. As a healthy suggestion you should try and avoid doing that.
Spacer One Nov 13, 2005, 09:45 AM and I was excited that Kinboat was back for about half a second...
