When would they disappear? Or would you have slaves in the modern era? ;)

Slaves don't grow on trees. You go beat up your neighbours and capture his Workers.

or when you defeat a barbbarian camp you could take some

the resource could disappear with democracy but not the slaves, if you do not upgrade them to worker ( kind of giving them their freedom) they start to dissapear.
