View Full Version : What level are you playing on
fret Jul 07, 2003, 05:42 PM I'm not an RTS nut. At least I wasnt until RoN arrived :)
I haven't managed to beat Tough yet, enjoying the moderate level. I reckon I'll beat Tough soon, just need to work out how to fine tune the game amidst all the chaos.
Jaybe Jul 08, 2003, 03:12 AM As a TBS (Regent level Civ3) player, I play Tough with Very Slow & Expensive tech (which the AI does relatively poorly on). I play Normal speed but Very Slow during battles, and I pause whenever I want. A 2 hour game may take me 6-8 hours of my time.
zippy Jul 08, 2003, 04:39 AM Currently on Easy, but intend to move up to moderate when I get the time. I am just waiting to finish my CTW campaign.
Paalikles Jul 08, 2003, 04:39 AM I play easy for now. Dont have time to play much - and I have decided to fine tune my skills (shortcuts etc) before I go on upwards. I did beat the AI at moderate 1 time, but decided to stay put for a while. I am a regent player of civ, so I am used to taking the way from "bottom" to "top"...
Edit: I can beat the easy AI with my hands tied behind my back - it is just the "know all strenghts and weaknesses"-thing before you attempt a new challenge, that I suffer from ;)
Edit 2: spelling
Edit 3: I am now more or less comfortable on moderate....
PeteT Jul 08, 2003, 07:23 AM I can beat the easy AI with my hands tied behind my back
Paul Stephanouk, RoN's producer, did say "That's the level my mother would play on" ;)
Japanrocks12 Jul 08, 2003, 02:21 PM easiest
i admit it,...
fret Jul 08, 2003, 04:37 PM @Jaybe & Paalikles - I managed to scrape my way up to beating monarch on civ 3, never come close on emporer though. For some reason, on RoN I think I'll be slaughtering tough every game soon, but getting wasted on Tougher no matter what :crazyeye:
@Zippy - thats exactly what I did first, had a quick play about and then started a world campaign on easy.
I find you can still win without too much micromanaging on moderate. On tough you have to start thinking about selling crap at the markets and managing your gathering at lot more closely, i still struggle to find the right balence.
zippy Jul 10, 2003, 03:26 AM Just tried moderate last night. Got totally stuffed.
RX2000 Jul 16, 2003, 11:38 PM I beat the CTW campaign pretty easily my first time through on Easy difficulty, so I thought I'd retart and play another one on Moderate. I got my ass handed to me. :( I need to learn the rock-paper-scissors of the units better first too.
Rohag Jul 18, 2003, 09:22 PM I can pretty consistently beat the computer on tough 1v1, but I prefer to play with more nations in Diplomacy games and I rarely can handle two-front wars on that level. Moderate is where I'm happy at present - I can do well in a multinational diplomatic game without having to be too aggressive (which diminishes my fun).
downwithgravity Jul 26, 2003, 12:37 AM i can almost always win on tough now. i think im getting better :)
DS_CL Jul 27, 2003, 08:18 AM 2 on easy. I played moderate once and decided I am not quite ready for that. :)
Silverflame Aug 16, 2003, 10:28 PM On moderate I can win pretty easily.
On tough, I get whooped.
If I have a team that outnumbers the enemy team on tough, then it's too easy.
If I have a team that is outnumbered against the enemy team on moderate, then I get whooped.
What shall I do? :crazyeye:
LedZep Aug 18, 2003, 09:56 PM I can beat Tougher with pausing, without pausing I can beat Tough almost all the time (I usually play diplomacy with many computers though, at least 6).
I also played a total of around 10 games, then I left for a vacation and didnt play at all. First game was on easy, won, second on moderate, I won, third on tough, lost, but then tried again and won, and then one time tried Tougher with pausing where I barley one (had to do a lot of dirty tricks on my allies :nuke: )
PCHighway Aug 19, 2003, 06:15 AM Silverflame-

What shall I do? :crazyeye: Is even teams out of the question ;)? Seriously though, I like to play moderate, with Diplomacy on. There is usually a chance of buying off the enemy if it gets to tough, to make peace. The limit for only one ally helps also for the AI in diplo, and you won’t run into crazy 5v1 or anything similar. I like to limit the ages to industrial, the game gets out of hand with nukes, they are far to common and the armageddon part really dampens the game, having no control over AI usage of nukes.
CivGeneral Sep 18, 2003, 11:32 AM I have experiances in playing in Star Wars Galatic Battleground, Empire Earth, and Age of Kings, to play on the Highest level.
puglover Sep 18, 2003, 03:41 PM I need an ally to win on Easy. But I've won several CTW scenarios (not the campaigns) on easy. Does that count?
casual_moose Oct 08, 2003, 04:54 PM eisiest even teams usually
and i still cant destroy them...
zurichuk Oct 08, 2003, 05:48 PM was winning on tough consistently but have now gone back to Civ 3 until Patch 3 is released after the beta tests
Tatran Oct 17, 2003, 02:38 PM The same counts for me,as zurichuk, beat the AI at Tough
several times and one or two (the latest games) at Tougher
level, but than went back to play Civ3.
zurichuk Oct 20, 2003, 08:10 PM of course with conquests just around the corner, it seems a return to RON unlikely now for a while, although mrs zurichuk enjoys a team game or two over the LAN (in this case we play 2 v 2 v 2, one easy, one moderate, as she likes to build up a massive army and blitz them at the end). Shame she doesn't like Civ
MattyB2 Nov 03, 2003, 06:26 AM i can do a tough 1v1 i can beat tougher+toughest if i rush the comp but if i dont rush .... playing conquer the world on tough :D 2v1 and i was owned
1wheel Nov 14, 2003, 04:19 PM I can do tougher on custom diplomcy, but on thoughest I get slaghterd.
BearsRulez Jul 25, 2004, 12:17 AM On moderate doses for now...
Having difficulty on tough level. Seems to me there a major AI advantage between moderate and tough levels. Couldnt even last till beyond the first 2 ages on tough.
(+) Influence Aug 17, 2004, 12:57 PM I play on tough, because that's where you and the AI are on an equal playing field.
LLXerxes Aug 19, 2004, 06:16 PM Easiest.
I just got the game
kamleungc Aug 20, 2004, 11:29 AM If I can hold off the thoughest for about 45mins, I can win it.
Well...it's just too rare.
E-Honda Oct 15, 2004, 01:54 PM Tougher...I have some saved games that seem to be stalemates.
Much easier to defend and win a Wonder victory though. Defend coastlines from ships with attack heal and watch for incoming transports.
On scattered islands it is more difficult to win a military victory though.
But its definately worth the challenge.
Roso Dec 19, 2004, 05:12 AM Easy. I play it only when I get tired of civ3, so I don't spend much time on playing it :coffee:
Flintlock Dec 19, 2004, 07:25 AM Tougher
(I am, however, cheating abit  I never let the two most powerful AIs join in an alliance, am playing the game on Very slow/expensive techs as the Americans and with my own poplimit mod :goodjob:)
covok48 Dec 21, 2004, 01:51 PM I play campaigns on easiest since Empire Earth ruined my taste for tough campaign scenarios. I also can learn what all the buildings and units do and control the games at my own pace. I don't have much time to play the game anyway, so it saves me a whole lot of time too.
For custom maps and multiplayer games I play on tough and generally the computer mops the floor with me on sea battles, but I can crush them on land.
[AoI]Smeagol Dec 28, 2004, 03:27 AM Toughest. I just beated USA with lakota on amazon rainforest.
Grohan May 31, 2005, 06:43 AM Easy. Even though it's pretty easy, AI sometimes puts up decent fight so I haven't tried higher difficulty levels yet.
dojoboy May 31, 2005, 08:40 AM Some months ago, I was winning 1v1 diplo games on tough. Just started playing again a week ago, and warming up for tough by playing 1v1v1 diplo games on moderate.
Damnyankee Jul 18, 2005, 07:35 PM I always play on Tough and always win, about to go to tougher.
Cilpot Aug 08, 2005, 04:20 AM I always win on tougher.
I have beaten toughest a couple of times, but lost most games on this level.
MrRats Aug 08, 2005, 06:12 PM Easiest.
And owning :)
LordTerror Dec 21, 2005, 09:24 PM On CTW, I have beaten tough. After beating 3-4 capitals, it becomes really easy to win with so many resources. If I remember correctly, I played as the Germans, and I was able to take a capital every single turn.
I rarely play this game anymore except with my brother. On multiplayer, we can beat 2v6 on moderate (rushing 2, making it like a 4v4) and 2v2 on toughest (rushing 1, making it like a 3v1).
gimhalos Jan 02, 2006, 07:29 PM I haven't played in about a year... just wondered over here from the Civ forums... but when I did play tough was becoming pretty easy, I did okay at tougher in 1v1.... I probably couldn't beat easy now though ^^
gatomarado Feb 18, 2006, 03:16 PM Well when i started i thougth "easy" was hard. Some weeks later the AI of the game was already studied and "thougher" was much easier than the "easy" the first time i played.
BTW the "P" keyboard key is very helpfull.
Eyeflash Apr 23, 2006, 02:22 AM I like to limit the ages to industrial, the game gets out of hand with nukes, they are far to common and the armageddon part really dampens the game, having no control over AI usage of nukes.
Hmm, I've never seen an AI firing a nuke in a Quick Battle. I usually just get bored and cause an Armageddon.
But then again, I've only played on Easy so far, maybe on the more difficult levels, the AIs are more nuke-happy. I can usually finish all CTW campaigns on Easy with total(100%) world conquests. Even in Cold War. That takes some VERY good timing, because you have to have the entire world apart from NATO and the U.S.(playing USSR), then quickly conquer the NATO, use Treachery on the south-western USA, and then take the capital, while hoping that Ronnie Reagan doesn't start a nuclear war.
EDIT: Oh, and you need to take Japan independently of the US and NATO too.
andvruss Jul 11, 2006, 01:13 PM I can do tougher with peace until Enlightenment :D.
Sabreman Jul 13, 2006, 06:36 AM I just completed CTW on easy and to be honest it really was easy :) It is my first RTS though, so I didn't want to jump in at the deep end. Looking forward to tackling more ambitious levels in future, though it has to be said that when things get really frantic I tend to lose the plot somewhat.
Sukhoi Jul 14, 2006, 12:13 PM I play on the Toughest and it is on peaceful until Englightment Age. I rarely play online.
