So I was thinking about how to make a civ3 scenario more interesting when I get an idea.
How about that instead of basing flavor units solely on the civ that's playing, we do it on the area where they are on the world map (on a world map) scenario.
How exactly?
Well what if we were to create a bunch of resources like 'Arabic Ore' or 'French saltpeter'? And then we make the Arabic flavor units So when a player starts out in, let's say, Arabia, the first units they could build would all of course be the traditional Arabic flavor units. But say that they then conquer egypt and expand into West Africa. When they conquer that area they would obtain the resources unique to that region and be able to train "merceneries" that look like units from that region? This would work great because in the early ages when you simply can't connect all your cities with roads, each little clump of your cities would produce units from that region?
Granted, when you get into the modern age, the AI with a large empire would face the dillenma of choosing between 2 different looking units that serve the exact same purpose. But what if these "Mercenery" units were made a bit weaker? Then the AI would choose their civs native units over the foreign mercenaries.
I think this would be an interesting way to diversify the game, what do you guys think?
The other thing that I realized is that a quick way to make flavor units would just be to... say for the turks, copy and paste a turban onto the bodies of standard archers or spearmen, giving them a quick Turkish look or something.
Just my random thoughts for the day.
