A good idea. A while back there was a thread with map links (here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=957772#post957772)). This topic popped up again yesterday, or something. (I didn't know that I actually had the link, sorry for not posting it.)

I see 2 main divisions -- cartography and history.

Cartography (maps) can be subdivided into area, with each area further subdivided into political/historical, physical, resources, and environmental (e.g., extent of forests at any time). Fictitious (Middle Earth etc.) is a possibility as well.

History can be subdivided (1) likewise by geographic area, as well as timeframe (2) general technological developments and (3) military developments. (1) can be further subdivided into cultural/military/religious etc.

Please add your thoughts on this matter!

That's not just a sticky thread, that's a library. I e, we'd need a librarian to organise everything, and update stuff. If you take that job, or find someone who will, we can have it, if not, it's better with just a sticky where everyone can post their links.

Yeah, I rather feared that ...

So, yes I would, for a limited period (say, three months) be willing to have a go at this -- that might not seem like much time, but (a) that's about all I can spare and (b) there'd probably be enough links in place by then to make it worth having, irrespective.

... So should I just email the Moderators & volunteer my services? -- As I mentioned, I'd happily commit to 3 months, which should get alot done and hopefully prove of some lasting value even if nobody else picks up the task at that point ... ?

This is a great idea. I have a found a number of good links for resource placement and eco-regions in the process of making my maps. Perhaps there sould also be links to programs like BMP to BIC. Originally posted by ozymandias

Heh heh, many of these are ones that I scammed off other people on this board. But I guess cuz they have yet to post them in this thread, I may as well. Give me hell if I repeat anything.

HISTORY:

Timeline of the History of the Human Race. (http://www.robotwisdom.com/netlit/history.html) The entries are pretty curt, but then again, there sure are a lot of them!
All Empires dot com: (http://www.allempires.com/) Little blurbs about various "civs," from Elam to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Not exhaustive, though.
Some stuff on the Celts, (http://www.kernunnos.com/home.shtml) but it's mostly on their coins. :o
Ancient Germanic heritage page, (http://www.anglo-saxon.demon.co.uk/lyfja/ghp/germanic.html) but of the mythology-religious-cultural heritage sort, rather than military heritage.
The Encyclopedia of the Orient (http://i-cias.com/e.o/index.htm) has plenty of handy articles (not too long) on all things Eastern.
Minnesota State University's e-museum. (http://emuseum.mnsu.edu/) Culture, history, religion, etc.

HISTORY & things MILITARY

Articles on the History of the Ship. (http://cma.soton.ac.uk/HistShip/)
Basic Ancient Egyptian Military Info. (http://www.touregypt.net/featurestories/defense.htm) Again, nothing definitive, but certainly handy.
Excerpts from Books (http://xenograg.isauras.com/excerpts.php) on ancient and medieval military history and religion.
A page on Polish Renaissance Warfare (http://www.jasinski.co.uk/wojna/index.htm)
"Cowboys and Indians" (http://members.aol.com/aacsgtmike/indians.html) -- an account of the Indian Wars and the US Cavalry. Warning: it's a bit triumphalistic for my tastes.
Infantry Tactics and its Material Causes, (http://www.ku.edu/carrie/archives/milhst-l/2001/09/msg00060.html) an article by Friedrich Engels, translated from German to Romanian, and then from Romanian to English (not the best form of transmission, but oh well).

CARTOGRAPHY

Plenty of Historical Map Scans (http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/historical/shepherd/) from the University of Texas. Some Texan on these boards already posted this link elsewhere, but I don't know who or where.
NASA Satellite Maps of Earth (http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/viewrecord?11656)

MISCELLANY (for me, that means TOLKIEN resources!)

Middle-Earth Vault General Inquiry Board (http://vnboards.ign.com/board.asp?brd=5042) -- the community of amateur Tolkien scholars I trust the most frequents this board. Post a question, and in a few days you'll have a fair amount of seasoned replies. You might get faster replies if you post your question on the Developers Board, (http://vnboards.ign.com/board.asp?brd=5043) but you shouldn't do that, because it's for specifically MMORPG development.
The Entmoot (http://entmoot.tolkientrail.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=8) is another good forum for asking questions, but you get less "gamers" responding and more "generally-juvenile" responses.
Ardalambion, (http://www.ardalambion.com/) the best online resource for Tolkien's languages.
The Encyclopedia of Arda (http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/) -- not definative (as we might expect from any encyclopedia), but certainly handy-dandy.
An archive (http://web.archive.org/web/20010419105125/http://users.twave.net/lively/meo/default.htm) of exacting amateur scholarship for the purpose of developping an MMORPG, some of it might be handy for Civ-based scenarios...
One site (http://collecttolkien.com/SMDbMapsLOTR1.htm) and another (http://lotrmaps.cjb.net/) containing Tolkien maps of wildly-varying authenticity. Beware! :)

Not much, but then again, I'm looking to be a beneficiary of this resource library, too! :D

Besides, it's time for me to go to Brussels -- today is my day to visit the Royal Museum of Military History!

Oz, I don't think you should use underlined text in the library, as that is very like a link (only the colour differ. Slightly). I think it's better if you have coloured entries;
General History, like this. Or just bold text.

Some links:
Global Forest Watch (http://www.globalforestwatch.org/english/interactive.maps/global.htm), lets you generate maps of forest coverings today and 5000 years ago. This is very nice if you want to make a realistic Europe map as it looked 4000 BC. You need a lot of forest!
http://www.wildwales.fsnet.co.uk/civ.html have some maps with resources, Kal el posted this a while ago.

Mithadan, at this point, it's organization that counts! -- Besides, who's the "first" to find a link anyway?

mrtn -- Good point; they'll gradually disappear over the next two days.

Thanks to you both :)

-Oz

EDIT: mrtn -- just rethought things; ALL I'll be posting at first will be the URLs; I'll try to make the name as reasonably descriptive as possible. Editting in more details I think will happen after I have most of the raw data posted.

Here are some good links for resource placement.

This one is for wine:
www.aboutwines.com/home/reference/regions/index.html

This is for aluminum:
www.world-aluminum.org/production/maps/index.html

This is for uranium. Not the best maps but it is a good starting point for doing more specialized websearches:
www.antenna.nl/wise/uranium/index.html

I couldn't find maps of saltpeter so I used salt mining instead:
www.saltinstitute.org/3.html

The Austalian Bureau of Statistics Ausstats site has many great resource maps buried in it but you have to use the search function to find them:
www.abs.gov.au/Ausstats/abs@.nsf/ausstatshome

In theory this should be a good all purpose site, especially for coal but for other resources as well. I found it to be very slow on my computer geode.usgs.gov/geode_frame.htm (http://geode.usgs.gov/geode_frame.htm)

You should also make note on your index that National Geographic Mapmachine has very detailed maps of eco-regions and resources.
