I watched a special on Discovery last night called "The Lost Temple to the Gods" which was about recent discoveries at the former base of the Nile before it was covered up by the ocean. They found evidence that suggests it is the legendary Egyptian city of Heracleion.
I have never heard of Heracleion before watching this show. Anyone care to explain the "legend" to me?

I've heard of Heracleon before, but I'm no Egyptoligist so I can't explain the whole legend to you. I think some folks have speculated it's the orgin of the Atlantis myth.

No, I'm pretty sure it sank into the depths of Davy Jones locker well after Plato- after all the name "Heracleon" is hellenistic, not Egyptian

Perhaps I'm thinking of different Nile delta = Atlantis theory. As I said I'm no Egyptologist. :egypt:

What was the city recorded as being like? I've read it was supposedly an important port city and that it was a large wealthy city with much culture.

There is a few citise in and around the mediterranian that have sunken into the sea. A few of them in Egypt.
The most famous Egyptian city is Alexandria. It is ow totally below sea level.
If my memory serves me it sunk about 500ad.
Heraclion ( I think it is spelt differenetly)sounds like a greek name so it's possible that it went under at about the same time.
