i saw dell19's succesion game, and thought it would be a good idea to start a general discussion thread about the game. I love this game almost as much as i love civ. If you don't have it and you like civ, i recomend that you get it. Its perfect blend of RTS and turn based empire building is great, although it is not the first to do this (try Star Wars: Rebellion) it is cetainly the best.

Anyone else have this game? Anyone else have the viking invasion expansion pack? Anyone else eagerly awaiting Rome: Total War?

IIRC there already is a general discussion thread on MTW. Look in Dell19's sig.

Dell19
Aug 10, 2003, 02:58 AM
There is probably room for a new discussion thread as the other thread had died and it should be being used for new players to join the two succession games. Also I must remember to alter my sig...

i've never played it. is that more like civ or MTW?

Benderino

"Lords" is good, I hear they are coming out with a 3rd installment.

I like MTW more. It's so cool. RTW should be great.

Has anyone gotten the expansion "Viking Invasion"? I wanted to know if it was worth buying.

i did. the new campsign is cool, and i think that there are about 70 new units. also, you can be some of the countries you couldn't be in the first one, like sicily and hungary. i think that it was worth buying... worth buying more than PTW at least

Thanks for the info. Is the new map of England good?

I can't wait to be Hungary, (I'm 50%, so I think they are worth a try, eh?)

Dell19
Aug 14, 2003, 01:32 AM
The Hungarians aren't too bad to play as, as they start with 3 provinces and can quickly bribe some rebel provinces and are similar to the Polish in game play. THe England map is pretty good but so far all my games have come to a stalemate with all my neighbours having huge armies that I didn't want to attack. Also if you want a real challenge, try playing as the Aragonese.

the sicilians are my favorite. i've taken over most of north africa and the italian peninsula. the pope attacked me , so i destroyed him. now i need to work on the italians...

Watch out, that Pope will keep leading rebellions against you forever. Alsways keep a big and strong army in Rome.

Dell19
Aug 14, 2003, 10:15 AM
Thats what happened in my game. I did briefly try and attack the African provinces but then the Italians began a war against the Germans and I benefitted. Unfortunately I ended up being excommunicated, being attacked by the pope, the Spanish, the French and the Germans...

Which is your favorite to play in England? Do they have the Irish? I hope so. Who are you playing as now? I say, build up strong, and wedge into your enemies. I love the Total War series.

Dell19

Yep they have the Irish. I wondered what you were talking about and then I realised that you were talking about the UK and scandanavia only game but of course with more provinces.

Depends on the difficulty level. Plus its usually possible to drive them out of Spain in 5 years simply by hiring mercenaries and new units and then attacking.

I have MTW(great game,by the way:goodjob: ) and I figured this is the best place to ask this so... do the AI's get unlimited money? I mean as the Italians the Pope attacks me in Naples, I win, take Rome and the Papal States. Naturally, a few years later he rebels, I plunder Rome leaving it with nothing. It is down to earning under 500 florins, yet the Pope's rebellion armies cost 1845 (yes, I calculated) florins. So how come, a few years later he has not disbanded his armies and given me mercs:confused:

Dell19
Aug 15, 2003, 03:23 AM
You are never forced to disband armies, it just means that he would no longer be able to build new units so he would be stuck with those units for the rest of the game. In a succession game this happened to the Italians as they were left with huge armies in Corsica and Sardinia but the armies were too large for them to support so they were stuck on those two islands as they couldn't afford to build a dock.

tctatheel7
Aug 15, 2003, 07:01 AM
yeah, unlike civ, when you get into negative money, you don't have to disband any units or destroy any buildings in MTW. I think what it means is that you have a loan from the bank. right now my brother is at -5,500 florins (gold)

Dell19
Aug 15, 2003, 07:11 AM
The odd thing about medieval is that for most of the games that I play I will be struggling for money and then there is usually a period where my treasury just expands rapidly, usually when I've completed my shipping empire. The the other coincidence is that when I reach 200000 florins I end up fighting lots of people.

Right now in my game as the Aragonese, the Italians and Spanish are both now at war with me even though I had never attacked either of them and had not even been attacking Christian empires for quite some time. Now I've been excommunicated so I am planning on a massive rampage.

Benderino
Aug 15, 2003, 09:22 AM
How do you succession games work, exactly? Are there more than one player?

Dell19
Aug 15, 2003, 11:08 AM
With the MTW games the actual Kings are more important than in Civ and after so many years the current King will die and then his heir will take over. So its possible to save the game when the current king dies and then pass on the succession game to someone else to play. So we only control one empire and take it in turns to be the King.

Benderino
Aug 15, 2003, 11:17 AM
Oh that's awesome. Yet, how does one transfer the game on? Just because you saved it, how do I get to carry on the legacy?

Dell19
Aug 15, 2003, 11:24 AM
Well it would be possible to just email it to the next player but at the moment we just zip the saved game file and the upload it using the CFC upload file function and then post the link to the file in the correct MTW thread and then the next player downloads it.

It was on easy  And I had one huge slice of luck early in the game when the French were winning a war against the English and then they capitulated into rebels so I managed to take about 4 provinces in the west of France which allowed me to destroy the Frenchwhen they reappeared and carry on playing the game as normal.

@Benderino Yep you can join and you can play next after Bob who I think is playing next although I'm not sure.

Its on Hard and we are playing as the Byzantines. Although at the moment the difficulty level has been bumbed up to very hard as we are having a huge war with the Spanish and the Mongols although progress has been made in reducing their armies.

Oh and I've started a new single player game as the Sicilians and this time I decided to bribe the armies in Russia and have 8 provinces now (5 in Russia).

Sounds great. I usually play on hard, but I could give very hard a try. Byzantines are alright. Which age?

Dell19
Aug 17, 2003, 03:39 AM
Well we started in the Early age but the Mongols have appeared so we are around 1250. If you want you can be the next player then the saved game is on the bottom of the page and remember that you need the 1.1 patch.

Also with the Sicilians I have managed to take over all the Russian provinces and began a war against the Polish.

Dell19
Aug 17, 2003, 04:54 AM
A Sicilian screenshot. As a little background only the Germans and Hungarians are actually at war and the Germany and Byzantine are my allies but it is quite a nice standoff, although I am worried that the date is getting closer to Mongol invasion time and I own Khazar.

that sucks. Good luck fixing it. I have a problem too. when I beat the campaign the screen turns white and I hear a voice that describes the powerful nation I just won as. Am I supposed to see anything too, or just hear the voice? It seemed like there should be pictures or a movie or something

There is a list somewhere of about 100 changes but most of them are minor. An example is that Kings are no longer invincible when they are on their own and surrounded by the entire enemy army.

i just had an idea. what if, in conquests, they allow it so that units could require buildings and/or a technology, and we create an MTW scenario for civ! we could just throw technology out and require every building to require another building(s) and every unit to require a building(s). if we got some custom and vanilla civ unit designs, and named them after MTW units, and name some custom and vanilla civ buildings, we could have a MTW scenario, with cities representing territories (example: a city where switzerland would be on a europe map would be named "switzerland", and represent the entire swiss teritory). of course, this all depends on whether or not firaxis has even THOUGHT about making buildings allow units and other buildings for conquests. knowing firaxis, they probably didn't:(, but who knows, maybe they'll include it in the next expnasion, or perhaps civ4

Greeny
Aug 28, 2003, 07:25 PM
I thought I'd let you guys know about a very impressive mod that is nearing completion. It basically uber-tweaks loads of little things along with many new concepts for the main Europe campaign in VI making the game a lot more realistic and even better.

For example:
NO rebels at the start loads of minor factions instead (not implemented yet)

Vastly improved crusades, making them more historically correct being far less frequent but far more powerful

Unit line-up significantly altered, loads of different units for each faction

"Homeland provinces" system making unit building more realistic

Edit: and lots lots more!

http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?;act=ST;f=5;t=10435

I played one of the MTW versions and it was a significant improvement. Once it is at the final version (should be quite soon) perhaps we could have a succession game using it? Once we have played it a bit to get the hang of all the cool new stuff of course.

Anyway I can't wait for it to reach the final version!

Dell19
Aug 29, 2003, 03:30 AM
Okay.

Well that Mod does soud interesting as more minor factions would make games as the Russians etc more interesting and more powerful crusades could be good as well as long as they are not too powerful as the computer tends to save up its crusades and it could mean that once you become quite a powerful non Christian nation, everyone crusades against you and wipes you out.

Greeny
Aug 29, 2003, 06:54 AM
I think the crusades take 10 years to build and cost a packet so I don't think that would be a huge problem (actualy defending against realy powerful crusades would be rather fun since ATM they often are seriously underpowered by the time they reach where they are going).

Dell19
Aug 29, 2003, 06:57 AM
The point is though that many times I have had empires controlling the middle east region and then with a border on the North African coast with the Spanish and then another border with the Hungarians. It would then be very easy for me to launch an attack against the Huns and then find that the Spanish had launched a crusade and then have to watch my empire collapse...

BobTheTerrible
Aug 29, 2003, 04:28 PM
Looks like a cool mod. If I download it, will it change all of MTW so that I can't play a regular game? Does this fix the 56 King age glitch? ( I assume no)

Greeny
Aug 29, 2003, 06:46 PM
Yes it will permenantly change it and no it doesn't fix the 56 years old bug  . It is possible to have 2 versions of MTW on a system at once though (just copy the whole folder and rename it before you install the mod, then install the mod on one of the copies, then run Medieval_TW.exe in the applicable folder to run the modded/unmodded game).

BobTheTerrible
Aug 29, 2003, 08:29 PM
I only have 500-600 megs free on my HD, and I'm not sure I can delete enough stuff to fit another copy, so I'll stay normal VI for now.
