View Full Version : Unit Preview: Machine Gun
Troutline Aug 13, 2003, 09:53 PM Here is the final render of my Browning WWI-WWII era Machine Gun. All is left now is the animations and that's it!
Please post comments and suggestions before I start animating so I can change it before the tedious work (which is soon, late Thursday).
Thanks.
mrtn Aug 13, 2003, 10:18 PM Can we see it in the ordinary view?
Troutline Aug 13, 2003, 10:30 PM "Ordinary"? You mean the default position or from civ view (further away)?
mrtn Aug 13, 2003, 10:35 PM Orthographic, not so much from above
Dom Pedro II Aug 13, 2003, 10:38 PM Wow! This unit is really taking shape... I like it! :goodjob:
Troutline Aug 13, 2003, 10:43 PM Here ya go:
Echo 9 Aug 13, 2003, 11:58 PM Go For it, Troutline!
Bjorn Bjornson Sep 05, 2003, 03:23 PM Yay, I'm definitely awaiting these animations.
Can't wait. :goodjob:
I assume the teal color on the example model will be civ-color? Awesome.
MarineCorps Sep 05, 2003, 03:56 PM Cool unit but I must ask if the guy is always going to look like a tree trunk. While I'm waiting for you to post the unit I gotta figure out which tech its going to come from.
Krayzeenbk Sep 05, 2003, 04:16 PM Looks great up to this point.
Could be a flavor unit

i would probably put it with Amphibious Warfare, like in TETurkhans Mod
MarineCorps Sep 05, 2003, 04:45 PM Thats actually not a bad idea. Since in my mod I increased the Marines power as usual and moved it to computers leaving nothing for Amphibious Warfare. Now I have something.
Mr. Dictator Sep 05, 2003, 06:20 PM Ha, Dictator saves the day!
MarineCorps Sep 06, 2003, 02:03 PM Can you give us a rough guess on how long we will have to wait before it's ready for us to download?
Troutline2 Sep 06, 2003, 10:01 PM I've been having problems posting lately, this post is a test.
Troutline2 Sep 06, 2003, 10:07 PM Ok, here is the situation.
I've finalized the model (I put a gas mask pocket on the front of him to give him more shape) and have all the animations planned out.
I'm having problems getting all the frames the exact same size using Rhino and PSP (with animation shop). I've tried Neomegas Rhino unit creation tutorial, but the unit frames keep twitching every which way due to different sizes etc.
I've been swamped with school work as of late, but I am going to have lots of free time tomorrow and *hopefully* someone could help me out and I could finish it and post it.
Has anyone figured out the secret of animation?
mrtn Sep 06, 2003, 10:16 PM Troutline, PM a moderator about your problems, it's actually not allowed to have more than one log in.
MarineCorps Sep 07, 2003, 12:13 PM I was wondering about troutline2. I saw him join then I also saw troutline changing his password at the same time, so I thought it was a very odd conidence.
Slash78 Sep 08, 2003, 07:42 PM Looks good. The trick would be to get the guy to sit behind the machine gun. Also, could someone make a Rifleman version of that guy. It would make a great WW1/WW2 British Infantry unit. Another unit you could make for WW1 would the the 'Light Machine Gunner'. Instead of being armed with a rifle, he could have a Lewis Gun with the animation of a Marine.
Mr. Dictator Sep 09, 2003, 05:24 PM do you mean like a gatling gun?
Slash78 Sep 09, 2003, 05:29 PM The Lewis Gun was the light machine gun used in WW1 that had a drum magazine on the top. I'll try to find a pic.
Mr. Dictator Sep 09, 2003, 05:44 PM O, but a gatling gun would be good too, work well for a Civil War Scen, like Proficia's
Slash78 Sep 09, 2003, 05:57 PM Ok, i see what you are saying. Yes, having a 19th century gatling gun unit would be very good.
Mr. Dictator Sep 09, 2003, 06:15 PM found one, pretty cool
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads5/Lewis.jpg
Bjorn Bjornson Sep 10, 2003, 05:44 PM But a Gatling gun isn't a "walking fire" weapon, like a Bren, BAR, or I suppose a Lewis gun.
Personally, a Gatling gun could be a predecessor to a Machine Gunner the way a harquebusier is a predecessor to a Musketman (not talking Civ3 vanilla musketman, who is a harquebusier).
But, in a way, the vanilla Marine already fills that role, and I think its weapon is based off the BAR - atleast that's what it looks like to me.
One thing I dislike about Civ3, is the techs where industrial military units come about. I mean, you can't have efficient machine guns or repeating rifles without smokeless powder. So I made a tech after refining called "Explosives" which grants Machine Gunner, Artillery, and vanilla Infantry.
Another thing I hate, is how a bolt action rifleman needs rubber. I mean, say its the 1960s, you are researching Space Flight, can build jets, tanks, etc. - but in some new found settlement, without access to godly rubber, is forced to build muzzle loaders?! That's absurd. In my mod, once your civ learns to build repeaters, thats the lowest weapon you can go.
Ok, too much ranting today. I'm done. Again, can't wait for this unit to be finished, keep up the good work! :)
Slash78 Sep 10, 2003, 07:32 PM I think that's what Mr. Dictator meant by gatling gun, a predecessor to the machine gun as a defensive unit.
Mr. Dictator Sep 10, 2003, 08:15 PM yes with like 2-9-1 stats
Bjorn Bjornson Sep 10, 2003, 11:53 PM Oh, yeah yeah yeah...
I forgot to elaborate, if the Machine Gunner is to be in the defensive units chain, the Gatling Gun as its predecessor should be seperate from the chain, being a very new technology at the time - considering the Military are always conservative, they wouldn't use the newest without it being proved.
For example, in vanilla Civ3 the defensive chain goes: spearman, pikeman, musketman. I think that is too fast of a transition from polearms to firearms. And since I've added a much-needed filler, Dark Sheer's Musket Infantry, I've made it so pikemen upgrade to the new musket infantry, which comes after gunpowder. The vanilla musketman (which I call harquebusier - CUZ IT IS) also upgrades to the added one.
So it makes the new gunpowder weapons availible, but does not replace the regular polearms (since pikes were still widely used well after firearms were invented).
So, I was just saying, the Machine Gunner could be and upgrade from an earlier defensive unit, but if there is any earlier machine-gun type unit made, I think it should not be upgraded from anything, you have to build the new tech units from scratch.
If I'm making any sense. Heheheh this is all about a unit that hasn't even been really proposed as yet!
aracuan Sep 20, 2003, 05:09 AM yes, definately!cant wait me as well!keep up the good work.
TopGun Sep 28, 2003, 03:06 PM Hey Trout, you still working on this one????
Troutline2 Sep 28, 2003, 04:15 PM Jees, these logins are giving me a real headache.
Ill post the .3ds file so someone can animate as I do not have the time or knowhow of animation.
Sorry for the delay guys, school has got me messed up, so much homework.........
Where can I upload the file?
TopGun Sep 28, 2003, 04:58 PM Bottom of the Civfanatics pages... click "Upload File". There ya go!
jamesjkirk Sep 28, 2003, 06:08 PM Could you do the same with that Vickers tank you were also working on? thanks :)
Troutline2 Sep 28, 2003, 06:10 PM Thanks:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads5/MG_v1.zip
This is in .3ds format, I also included my other project, the Vicker's Tank, also in .3ds and in .3dm (Rhino format).
Thanks guys, hopefully I'll see my creations sometime soon eh?
Troutline2 Sep 28, 2003, 10:39 PM I wouldn't mind making a gat gun either if you guys could animate it. Tell me what you think:
Troutline2 Sep 29, 2003, 12:51 AM Except I would put a Bruce Feed on there instead of that drum magazine. A Bruce Feed System are 2 magazines side by side in which the gun automatically switches magazines when one has been expended, and more mags can be continually added during firing. Of course, you'd have to be pretty fast at reloading :)
Echo 9 Sep 29, 2003, 02:11 PM A Gatling Gun would be great... it would provide the first branch in
the Machine Gun family tree.
Troutline2 Sep 29, 2003, 06:53 PM Check it out, here it is so far:
Troutline2 Sep 29, 2003, 06:56 PM not bad for an hour and a half eh?
Suggestions and corrections appreiciated, and if anyone has a good metallic gold texture, I would love to use it.
Sarevok Sep 29, 2003, 10:39 PM hehe, can i use this? im making a WW1 scenario for conquests when it comes. if I can...
BRING ON THE CANNON FODDER!!!
Troutline2 Sep 30, 2003, 06:19 PM Here is the final preview (with no person of course, you could just use a generic person or use the rifleman model, whatever you guys can come up with).
This also comes with the textures I used:

here is the pic:
statusperfect Oct 01, 2003, 04:59 AM what program do you make your units in?
Troutline2 Oct 01, 2003, 07:05 AM I used Rhino, but I saved it as .3ds for all you 3d studio people out there, but many other programs support this type of file also.
statusperfect Oct 01, 2003, 07:29 AM thanks, i have to check that prog out ;)
Troutline2 Oct 01, 2003, 10:31 PM Is anyone doing these?
Troutline2 Oct 04, 2003, 04:46 PM bump
Bjorn Bjornson Oct 10, 2003, 01:34 AM So you can't make the animations?
MarineCorps Oct 10, 2003, 01:56 PM No he can't. I'd be willing to try may hand at it except the only graphics program that I have is useless (Kodak imaging). However I think my school has them and as I have a study hall first period every day, 90 minutes to work, hopefully next week I can try some thing out. I'll see if I can't get photo shop to download on to my computer first, if that works you should see the units soon.:)
Kryten Oct 10, 2003, 03:15 PM You can download a 30 day free trial of Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8 here:- :)
http://www.jasc.com/download_4.asp?
....and then use the 'cut-'n-paste' method to animate the unit, although 'cut-'n-paste' can be a bit time consuming.
MarineCorps Oct 10, 2003, 05:41 PM Really? You'd think that it would be the fastest. Thats one big file, well looks like I'm downloading it at school as I'm not waiting 3 hours to download it (oh how I hate my computer). Thanks for the link.
MarineCorps Oct 15, 2003, 08:19 AM All right I am currently downloading Paint shop from the link Kryten gave me at my house while I'm here at school. Hopefully I can be done with this unit by the end of the week.:)
