You should get Medieval Total war as well :) Since Rome Total war is the successor to MTW and MTW is still a great game.

Dell, I see you've changed your avatar to that screen shot. But aren't you a cheese Mongol? You might need a different game for that:D
And where is that shot? Northern Italy, Southeastern France maybe?

I don't know where it was taken, but the Mongols do exist on Medieval total war so there is a slight connection...

bah, it could just as well be southern germany!

And with it much smaller you can't tell those are Romans. They could very well be a Mongol horde. BTW, it also seems like the terrain is somewhere in Italy or thereabouts.

Yes well I would have it full size but some people might complain...

That. Picture. Rocks. :D I think I will buy this game. Need to get MTW first though.

This game looks great, I have to get it!

Just as a side note, you should probably read a little about the game before just buying the game because of a screenshot :) Although it does look good... I wonder if I can preorder it....

Yesterday there was a trailer on BBC2 for a show called "Time Commanders" and by the looks of it, it is people playing Rome: Total War aginst each other! It had a few clips in it that I'm sure are RTW. I don't know anything else about it except that it's on BBC2 on Sept. 4th.

I'll definatly be watching

Rome total war is likely to be a Christmas release so I don't see how they could be playing it and if they are then they should be releasing it properly. Also TV games shows tend to be crap.

Here's a quote from some guy who claims to be involved; from the totalwar.com forums:
http://pub133.ezboard.com/fshoguntotalwarfrm7.showMessageRange?topicID=1455. topic&start=21&stop=35

The first series is ancient battles only, set in and around Roman and Greek times, including Trebia (Hannibal vs Rome) and Watlingstreet (Boudicea), among others. It uses the engine as it was about a month ago, so it's a decent reflection of where the game's at. It uses the modding mechanism to load new artwork and so on, which is nice because it gives the total-conversion mechanism a runout. We're actually doing quite a bit of the work for them, artwise, and they were nice enough to send down some champagne with the pilot vids

True, TV games shows aren't usualy great, but I'm definatly going to see what it's like (and see what the RTW engine is really capable of).

Gamesmaster was quite good :p

Well that does sound more promising and I did see a trailer for it but I switched off when I saw it as I didn't know it was about Rome total war. Do you know what time of day it will be on?

The thing about RTW, that realy makes me want it is the fact that units actually fight each other, instead of mindlessly hacking with swords. I've been anticipating this game for quite some time now. They say the engine will be good and that you can play on lower-end systems, but I can't imagine it playing on my comp.

Unfortuneately I can't use MPlayer 9 so I can't see the movies.

You should be able to find some Rome Total war movies on PC magazine discs if you look hard enough :) I don't know what the minimum requirements will be but I expect that they will try to make them as low as possible so you might be able to play it especially if they allow scaleable options.

Well I don't have enough money ATM to go spend on Rome Total war movies that come with magazines. I do however have the one that comes on the VI disk ,and since its a Bink video player, it runs fine.

I can't wait for this game to come out, I just prey that it is as addicitive as the earlier Total War games, but that it wasn't as repetitive. The scope for success as a leader should be the invasion of Gaul, the defeat of the Germanic tribes etc, not enslave EVERYWHERE!

I also hope seiges are more meaningful, in Medieval the only Castles to hold out for long have tiny garrisons meaning they are easy to beat

Dell19
Aug 26, 2003, 02:59 AM
Yes that would be useful as you expect a large army stuck in a castle would be able to sneak in supplies by creating diversions etc.

BobTheTerrible
Aug 26, 2003, 08:56 AM
True but castle sieges would be nearly impossible if there was a large garrison inside.

@KittenofChaos-You know you can turn on victory by glorious achivements in MTW, instead of trying to conquer everywhere. It will offer you more realistic goals and stuff.

Does everybody here know it's not out until April? That's 7 months away. Let's not get too excited.

Of course.

But the AI isn't very good at that!

In the latest game with Golden Achievements I'm beating the A.I without mercy. I really do find the only challenge is rebels and the vast amount of effort playing all the battles takes especially when accursed Germans re-appear. GRRR!!!

I just read that yesterday in a magazine, which is very strange considering it is ready to be played for a TV program yet isn't going to be ready for people to buy for another 7 months...

Greeny

Well they've obviously got the battle engine working but they may still have loads of work to do on the campaign map side. 7 months does seem rather excessive though.

What is this programme?

It does seem strange.

I checked the date on Amazon by the way.

Its on BBC 2 and there is a little bit of information on the previous page that Greeny posted. Other than that we will just have to wait for the 4th of september when the program starts.

Here's a description from next week's Radio Times:

(it's on ay 8.00 pm 4th Sept. BBC2)

Time Commanders
New Series
Can the victories of history's greatest generals be re-created by contestants eager to demonstate thier own military guile? Tonight's team find themsleves in 218 BC, where they take control of Hannibal's Carthaginian army and attempt to defend Trebia in northern Italy from the Romans. Having formulated a stratagy, the team send their troops into battle, co-ordinating their moves via computers and witnessing the sound and fury of combat through the hi-tech studio set-up. Hosted by Eddie Marr.

I think the most interesting bit, is that based on the battle involved there should be war elephants! :goodjob:

My new moan:

If they can play the battle mode then we should at least be able to play a demo of the game!

BobTheTerrible
Aug 27, 2003, 04:15 PM
Is there a 100% chance of a demo? Because I read somewhere that they aren't sure if one will be released or not. Anyway I'm not having high expectations because I don't think it will work on my PC, but if a demo comes out, it will be on my computer the first day.

Thye probably still have to make loads of units. They have previews of the units on the site, and so far they look good. I hope they don't include Gladiators as units to have in your armies, because they weren't actually in the armies, they fought in the collosseams (sp). I'm tired of seeing games where gladiators will fight alongside the armies.

Greeny
Aug 27, 2003, 06:35 PM
But haven't they got a "Spartacus" mini-campain? For that that just HAVE to have gladiator units!

Dell19
Aug 28, 2003, 03:27 AM
Generally the total war games do try to be historically accurate but its likely that they will include some sort of elite army like the Viking Berserkers...

I can't wait for this game Medieval Total War was great. The battle system in Total War is awesome, nothing even compares. If they improved the rest of the game, nation building etc... Then this game would be great.

My dream of the perfect game would have the nation running of Europa-Universalis 2 and the Battle System of Total War

I will definitily grab a copy of this game. This thing seems to be great, though I never tried MTW.

actually, they did- during civil wars, desperate Roman general would draft gladiators amoung the ranks...

and yes, there is a huge load of units, if you check out the web site every week they up0date a unit profile, there is already a hefty sum of troops form assorted nations represented...

Well, I saw the programme tonight (Time Commanders). I missed the first half hour but what a great programme it was!

:goodjob:

And they beat the Romans.

Dell19
Sep 05, 2003, 03:18 AM
I missed the first two minutes but I don't think they ever actually mentioned RTW... Some of the troop movements didn't seem quite right and also it did remind me that hopefully they will be adding loads of diplomacy options this time. I wonder if the AI had been specifically ordered to attack. My experience is that they will attack even without goading them.

The only possible problem, although this may because I was watching it on a small screen, was that on zoomed out map it was very hard to tell what was happening.
