Donovan Zoi

This is the tale of two CivFanatics. Both of them have a long history in CFC's Democracy Game. Both are long on opinions and short on patience. And yet, neither one of them seems to agree with the other when it comes to forwarding the game.

Ladies and gentlemen.....it had to come to this. ;)

In this corner...... is the favorite. A pillar of the CFC community, donsig is a veteran of both the GOTM(Civ2 & Civ3) and the Democracy Game. In the latter, he stands as a controversial figure whose frankness seems to have earned him the begrudging respect of the populace. donsig is also known for his uncanny ability to fit insightful 1000-word dissertations of policy into one paragraph. ;)

And in this....other....corner is the relative newcomer, and challenger. Donovan Zoi has hardly ever set foot outside of the comforts of the Democracy Game, and as such was rewarded the opportunity to moderate that Forum. :mischief: And while he can talk a good game on Civ3 strategy, not much is known of his playing ability. Zoi has never played a Civ3 GOTM, nor participated in a PBEM game.

Now starts the warm-up.

The two contenders would like input on which type of game should be played. What size map? How many AI? Any victory condition? Please post what you would like to see between these two fierce rivals. You will get statements from both of them shortly.

Now, go grab some refreshments and get ready to RUMBLE. It's on!

I think it would be interesting if a cultural or a domination victory were the only possible victory outcomes for this game. :mischief:

donsig
Aug 21, 2003, 06:27 PM
We need input on which countries we should play as well!

Cultural or domination only? Let me see, which one would I pick...? ;)

donsig - you are the master Orator - using words and logic to sway people.

There is only one country for you - the masters of philosophy and logic, the Greeks!

DZ - you are more direct in your approach, but only once you have decided on you path. Until then, you are quiet, allowing others to bring forth ideas. Once you have started down the path, you are resolute! For you, the mightly Samurai of Japan!

What a surprise. :D

Go, donsig!

And good luck too, Donovan. :)

Ah, come on. I've been playing the democracy game longer than DZ. Hell, I beat him in a DG2 Presidential Election.

And donsig? I've beaten him out of the Vice Presidency and the top Judicial spot.

I don't get an invite to play? :p

Never mind. This'll be interesting to watch from the sidelines. :D

Cyc

No Spaceship or Diplomatic Victory. No respawn, no double production. Eight civs including the humans. Humans choose their favorites to play, all other tribes are random. Large Continent, 5000 years. :) Good luck to both of you Gorinians!

Cyc! Pleasure seeing you here in the spectators box. I agree with Raven on his choice of civ for Donsig and DZ. This seems like its gonna be an interesting match. Diplo and Space should be off. I feel like watching some blood squirt.

Keep all the victory options on. We should let these two hurt the other in the most painful ways possible. :)

So, which patch will we be using?

Donovan Zoi
Aug 23, 2003, 01:00 AM
Wow, the seats are starting to fill up! A veritable Who's Who of the Democracy Game has turned out for this event. Even "Mayor" Cyc has come back to see what all the fuss is about! Welcome to all!

And there's XIII, no doubt stopping by to lend support to a fellow.....hey, wait a minute. :hmm: :D

The game will start shortly. So far Cyc has come the closest to the type of game I would like to play, but I am still open to suggestions. I am also curious which conditions my opponent would find suitable.

@donsig - I currently have 1.21. If this is not compatible with your patch, should we both upgrade to 1.27? Let me know what you have, and we'll figure it out from there.

Everyone, please continue to offer ideas and stay tuned......

puwen
Aug 23, 2003, 03:57 AM
About patches, 1.27 and 1.21 are compatible in PBEM's.
Are you going on a random map or is someone creating a map for you?

Donovan Zoi
Aug 23, 2003, 11:25 AM
Good question, puwen. :)

I had figured we would just use a random map, but would be interested to have map creation discussed further if donsig is game.

However, I think random may be best because then no one but the software decides whether we face off early or later in the game.

donsig
Aug 23, 2003, 12:05 PM
I'm still using v1.21 in the Dual Alliance game. If XII upgrades (or we finish that one off before this one starts) then I wouldn't mind upgrading to v1.27.

Since this is a match to pit our respective playing styles against one another perhaps it would be best to have all victory conditions on. I don't mind a random map but that always has pitfalls since one of us may get a better starting position that the other. A map made by a neutral party could ensure we get an equal start.

When we come right down to it I'm pretty much game for anything though. :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't spell XIII's name right all the time. :p

Also, I could volunteer to create a more 'interesting' map than what the random map generator could throw out. :D :mwaha:

@Chieftess - Grab a seat. Things are going to start getting interesting soon. :)

@Octavian - I am somewhat leaning toward a random map, and would like donsig's opinion. I honestly don't care if I get a bad starting location, because good locations are usually just around the corner. ;) But if we do go the creation route, I don't want anything toooo interesting. Plus I don't want any modded food surplusses and things like that. donsig and I want to test our skills against each other, not the map. :)

@donsig - I am up for all victory conditions on as well. Plus I think I kinda like the opportunity to play as Japan. Will you take Ravensfire's suggestion as well(the Greeks), or do you have another civ in mind?

Rik Meleet
Aug 26, 2003, 02:31 AM
The speaker screams through the arena on the top of his voice' the crowd are breaking the building down only by their voices.

"Will it be a victory of Domination and if yes; to who?. Will the fighter's culture be desicive or will it be a battle in which Diplomacy skills (who pays the most to the referee and who is the referee) are needed for victory ?

Will the fighter which is most Militaristic, Religious or Industrious win or will Scientific, Commerical or Expansionistic snatch this one ?

Who will upgrade first and who will be held back by lack of food or fresh water ? And are luxury aids or balast ?

Join the arena and see the fight to the death !"

I'll post a poll ;)

Random map is fine with me. All victory types on is good. I'll play the Greeks.

I'm still using v1.21 and probably will continue to do so untill v1.27 is ok for the GOTM.

@col, you're next...... ;) Actually, it would be interesting to see which mods would participate. I would love to see an all-human game, although those games are usually impossible to keep going.

---

@donsig - ok Japan(me) vs. Greeks(you). Thanks again to Ravensfire for the selections.

After that, I would say random settings for age, temp etc.

We would still need to decide Map Size, Land type(Continents etc), Barb Activity, Skill Level and # of AI opponents. Am I missing anything?

I would prefer Standard to Large, Continents, Raging(or the next one lower), Monarch or Emperor, 6 opponents + us = 8 civs total.

What do you think, donsig?

NewDestroyer
Aug 26, 2003, 06:59 PM
an all human moderator game would be possible because all the moderators are active on civ fanatics ;)

Sure, count me in for the mod one. :p

We shld start a thread in Staff, to ensure all mods know of this, so that none will have strong feelings at being left out... ;) Maybe even TF will join in - though I doubt it.

PS I thought we'd an old mod PBEM, which seemed to have died... :hmm:

The current tourney game (5-4 Babylon) is available on v1.27. I have not seen any definitive comments either way on GOTM23, but it won't be long before the announcement page comes out.

If y'all can wait to start, 1.27 has a lot of multi-player fixes. Don't know exactly how many apply to PBEM but it might be well worth the upgrade.

donsig
Aug 28, 2003, 03:21 PM
I'm out of action for a few days anyway. :(

@ DZ: Regarding map size, let's not make it too big. I'll play random barbs and random land type as well but I can see where we might want to choose the land type. Since it's a random map choosing land type may not be a big deal though. I'm not good on diety level at all but any other level will do. Of course if you insist on diety I will accept your challenge! ;)

Donovan Zoi
Aug 29, 2003, 11:14 PM
Let me know when you get things up and running again, donsig. There is no hurry, although interest in this match seems to have exceeded expectations. :)

I never said anything about playing on Deity as I am not quite there myself. ;) I am sort of leaning toward Emperor just to make it even more of a challenge for us.

As far as a map goes, I am fine with a Standard map and 8 civs total. Random barbs is cool because then you won't know if you have to prepare for them or not.

I still like Continents because I believe that will give the game true balance. It will force us to concentrate on both land and sea units. Archipelago is too much water...Pangaea is too much land.

Let me know what you think. :)

Continents and random barbs are good. I hope to be able to play in a couple days. :)

Tell me more about spoiler plages. I've been wondering how we'll be able to play this and let our *audience* enjoy it while still retaining the unknowns for the players. The only other PBEMs I've played were alliance games where we cooperated and had no secrets.

Perhaps it's possible to have 2 threads "Donsig" and "Donovan Zoi" and you ask Thunderfall to make thread "Donsig" impossible to enter for DZ and vice versa. IIRC I've seen that in Succession games threads where several teams played the same game.

There is another forum dedicated to pbems where pbem players can each have their own forum and post both private and public spoilers. It works well and avoids cluttering up the CFC pbem forums with 2 person threads. See Anarres sig.

So are we going with Standard Map, Continents, 8 civs total and random everything else? donsig as Greece as myself as Japan?

Those settings are good. I've not set up a game either. You can have the honor of setting it up and going first since you are the challenger. ;) I'm still using v1.21 but may upgrade to the newer patch once I finish this month's GOTM. Do you forsee any BTW, what level did we decide on and does v1.21 still have the bug where every game defaults to monarch?

EDIT: I now have a computer with internet access and PTW. till don't have access on weekends but there's light at the end of the tunnel. Perhaps we'll be able to move along a t a moderate pace once DZ's e-mail is working. :)

Funny you should ask, donsig. :)

The rubble you see in the north was a result of Carthaginian refusal to remove troops from Japanese borders. ;)

That said, I hope that this second "exploratory" trespass will be your last. As you can see, you have frightened our hard-working citizens and caused me to dedicate some troops for their protection.

The Japanese people would be happy to trade them, but would need your assistance to help connect our two lands. A luxury trade would go nicely with our recent Math trade, from which you are still receiving 4 gpt. Hopefully, you will not elect to jeapordize both. :)

Here's the email I sent along with the save. I am willing to help in some capacity, but would like to leave you an "out" if possible. What kind of Cage Match would this be if you were taken out by the Koreans and the Celts instead of me? :D This short alliance does add nicely to the plotline, however. Let me know what you think of my proposal.

PS, Just speculation, but methinks you summoned the Domino gods of DG1 through your choice of city names. :D

OK, how do we want to go about this? I checked the FA advisor and didn't see an embassy present, or that an alliance was available for us in the diplo screen. But perhaps we won't need that.

What would you give if I were to send a couple peacekeepers(Sword and Spear) through your territory to block an area of your choosing? This solution would keep you from dedicating 20 turns to a war if it can be peacefully settled sooner, and will hopefully make it tougher for Celt or Korean units to advance on your core cities.

I am also interested in Carthage and could consider an attack in either 5 turns(when our peace treaty expires) or in 9 turns (when our Lux trade agreement expires). Judging from past experience, I may be able to goad them into a war at will, but I am not certain.

So, let me know. Here is the next save, and you will see my peacekeepers just NE of chiefpaco. Please let me know how many you think you would need(and what you would pay for each) as I may be able to spare 1 or 2 more.

Let me know what these 'expenses' might be.

Cage Match Turns 100!

And there is plenty to talk about. Here is the latest missive from the Japanese Consulate:

Negotiations have stalled, eh? Hardly. As I speak to you, Japanese
forces are en route to meet our Spearman in hopes of peacefully rebuffing
a Carthaginian advance on your territory. This move will last for a few
turns while we continue to prepare for an attack on Hannibal's mainland,
which should be in about 6 turns(once our Lux deal expires). If you must,
you can wait until that time to send Philosophy.

As far my peacekeeping mission(and the on-field screenshot reports that
would accompany it), I am hoping that you can grant our nation 50 gold for
our assistance. This will be a one-time fee for the duration of your war
with Carthage, and may be renegotiated for the use of those units on
another front if requested by Greece. I pledge to be fair in any reassessment.

As a sign of goodwill, I will be posting my screenshots from the last few
turns. I hope you will respond in kind.

donsig,

Thank you for your generous payment. However, my men bring more bad news. :(

The Carthaginian Sword/Warrior team that has reached the mountains has been joined by a nearby Sword/Numidian Mercinary team. Your Iron workers are in danger if something is not done to protect them this turn.

My peacekeepers will do what they can to protect Chiefpaco, but we have no way of getting between the interlopers and your fine city at this point. The only way we can do so would be for you to call your workers off, and I realize that your need for Iron makes this impossible.

Please let me know else what I can do to help. I will remain vigilant as your lookout.

Respectfully,

Unfortunately, we must decline your generous alliance offer at the moment. If the Japanese people are to remove the Carthaginian threat once and for all, it is important that we adhere to our current timetable. However, it would be nice to keep the ffer open until that time if we find we can join sooner. Is is possible that you can keep the offer on the table for the next 3-4 turns and not be too offended if we politely decline until the right moment?

Another reason for this is that I feel our peacekeepers are doing what is required to ensure the safety of your citizens. And since Japan is enjoying strong peace with Carthage, Greece may lose what is essentially an inpenetrable wall of units if we were to actively engage in hostilities now.

Regarding the Carthaginian unit advancement, my guess is that their two stacks will continue to head due south, which I would like to counter by mirroring their advance in our current triangle formation. Doing this will protect your smaller cities in the northeast, but will likely lead to an open-field skirmish NW of Donsig.

Please let me know if this plan sits well with you. And please try to send any units possible --- offensive or defensive --- to the dead end road at the foot of the mountain(where the deer and the antelope play ;) ). Catapults would be ideal to soften up their strong defensive unit.

Here's the latest:

donsig

Our offer for an alliance with ur Japanese friends is still on the table.

Donovan Zoi
Jun 19, 2004, 09:58 PM
donsig,

You will be pleased to know that Japan is joining your cause against Carthage on Turn 106 aka next turn. :D My only question is: do we want to sign an official alliance that will lock us both in for 20 turns? Or more specifically, will a mere declaration of war on our part still justify the Philosophy gift? I would hate for either of us to be in a position where we could not cut and run if a reasonable exit plan became available.

It will be interesting to see if Hannibal's stacks will decide to press on toward your capital, or rush off to defend their own. In the meantime, you may want to move your two visible Hoplites one tile SW, unless you would like to try and splinter the two Carthaginian groups. Your call. :)

Also, I have noticed that you have made peace with Russia. One down, three to go! :D How close are you to making peace with Korea or the Celts, or do you have a score to settle with these two?

A secret Japanese-Greek alliance is acceptable. Scrates is now on his way to Zoi to enlighten our Japanese friends. :)

Another Korean spearman is heading for our herd of horses...

Celtic warrior and archer defeated in the jungle...

Yes, I have a score or two to settle with these two blue clad peoples. The Celtic lands have been pillaged and a task force has been dispatched to capture a couple Celtic cities. Then peace will be made and the task force will attempt to liberate Eklektikos.

In the mean time the pillagers are heading towards Carthage to continue their work. :)

Donovan Zoi

Thank you for your generous gift, donsig. I will repay you by helping to drive the Carthaginian menace from our continent.

Things have gone well in our first wave of attack against their capital. We have fallen two of their Numidians, leaving one redlined as the main defender. No word yet if this unit is protecting any Archers or Warriors, but I will keep you posted.

Near Donsig, I have ordered two of my units to advance beyond the river, while the other Spear was sent north to scout for approaching units. I have also ordered him there to watch for any Carthaginian retreat to protect their capital. Once again, you should probably send your Hoplites due south to continue your protection of the east. :)

Not much to report at the moment. As Japanese forces continue to advance on their next target, I thought I would take a moment to showcase the Top 5 Cities.

Once the envy of the world, the city of Zoi continues its tumble down the Top 5. However, it makes way for a second Greek city to enter the Top 3 --- the Cultural juggernaut: Cyc!

I should have an update with pics next turn. Here's the lateset:

Japanese have captured Leptis Magna and Hippo from the Carthaginians, and they still won't talk! Not that I plan to let up just yet, but I am curious what they would offer for peace.

Also, Japanese peacekeepers have been removed from the Greek front by Carthaginian rebels, save for one spearman. Does donsig need further assistance for the pests to the south and west? It would take us a few turns to get there, but something could probably be arranged.

The Greek Golden Age has ended...

Hannibal will talk with us but wants compensation in return for peace.

The Koreans are a pain but no real problem (yet). Nt entering peace talks with them as they still hold Eklektikos.

The Celtic war? Our first assault on one of their cities failed (by one hp). Next try will be soon.

The Battle for Hippo had been a fierce one, and managed to yield the Japanese a Great Leader, Tojo(I think ;) ). After leading the Japanese to yet another victory, Tojo high-tailed it to Tyvek and spearheaded a monumantal achievement:

Greece has made peace with both Carthage and the Celts. Only Korea remains at war with us.

The Greeks are so glad to hear about Tojo's new library. Tojo's army would have required a significant readjustment of Greek production. ;)

Hannibal finally became accessible, but was not interested in giving up Utica. So I guess I will have to take it myself. :)

The city of Strider was founded on the east coast near the border with Japan. The outskirts of the new city can be seen in the map below.

Well, the Japanese side of the multi-turn session ended with both Cage Match rivals making great strides on many facets of the game.

Peace: Goodwill and harmony are once again spreading across the continent, as Japan finally raids Carthaginian coffers for peace. ;) This decision was made after the ambush of Tojo's beloved Zoid Patrol, and the realization that a Wines/Furs for Ivory deal could be struck. If only the Greeks and Koreans could settle their differences...... :mischief:

Trade/Research: Turn 119 was a busy one for the Greeks, as they vaulted from needing Construction to trading for Feudalism. Thankfully, Japan's Great Library was there to secure Feudalism and bring the nation one step closer to Samurai. Thanks, Alex! :D

Expansion: While Japan moves to settle the western lands of former Carthage, donsig and Co. make a play for unincorporated territory near the Japanese capital. It is uncertain what effect this move will have on Greco-Japanese relations, but naming it Strider sure didn't help! Also, the city of Cyc is apparently sending out a Settler as well, as the city just dropped from Size 8 to 6.

A look at Strider (est. 170 BC)

Yeah, two peas in a pod, us two. ;)

So, the Greeks have learned about our secret island, eh? Apparently they have mastered the seas as well, and steathily. Our scouts never even saw their galley. :)

Congrats on the city of eyrei, donsig. It seems that the Cage Match will be entering a new phase as our two emerging superpowers vie for dominance thru peaceful means and expansion, at least for the moment. Korea seems to be the only other nation that can compete with us.

Let the new era of peace and prosperity commence! :king:

Finally! Time moves forward once again in the Cage Match, even as the calendar counts down to zero. What future event will cause our daycounters to change their ways? Could the answer lie with the new Japanese Monarchy?

Newly crowned King Donovan is more than happy to share the glory of the throne with his friend to the south, Lord donsig. For a price of course. :D

In the meantime, King Donovan invites all followers (of this thread ;) ) to join him right here at the Lurker's Ball, where all are free to celebrate the most popular 2-person PBEM thread in CFC history.

My thanks to all who have kept their interest in this game for the past year, despite my frequent wanderings. Please step up to the mike and say a few words about the game so far, whether it be analysis, or a toast of goodwill. The party will continue for the next 50 years or so........ :mischief: :D

Donovan Zoi
Oct 03, 2004, 09:12 AM
Well, it seems that in my inebriated state, I have let my greed get the best of me and have come away with nothing. :( ;)

As everyone knows, I was the first to Monarchy and had great plans to share the joys of this grand government for a price. However, I wanted to make sure to include my good friend donsig in the, um, transaction. ;)

Last turn, I had a chance to secure a moderate sum from Russia for Monarchy, but turned it down because I wanted donsig's money as well. And if Russia had the tech, he may very well take his business to Catherine instead. Well, we couldn't have this now, could we?

So, I tabled the negotiaitions with Russia for a turn, hoping to grab donsig's cash, followed by a quick deal with Russia. But much to my chagrin, donsig was willing to offer only 100g(which I refused), and opened the game to find that Russia had already secured Monarchy by other means!

So much for best laid plans, although I have been burned by the AI before in this scenario. I should have known better. So now I have to see if a deal can still exisit between Greece and Japan for this fabled government, or if donsig will choose to make one of his former enemies richer(Korea has it now, too).

I am also predicting that a trade route may be available next turn between Greece and Japan, if Strider is connected by road. After this great party, I hope there is enough wine left for trade!

Donovan Zoi

After another loooong DZ-sponsored delay, the game is on the move again:

Japanese workers complete road to Donsig! Japanese send Monarchy and Wines to the Greeks in the hopes of acquiring Incense and at least 150g. However, we will entertain any deal that will keep the Greeks from looking elsewhere.

The long-awaited connection of these two great lands has compelled the powers that be to set the calendars back to zero next turn and start anew. But they vowed that this will be the last time, regardless of what happens.

Let a new era of peace and prosperity begin, and may it last until...it ends! :D
